I'm looking to get a wide angle lens. I love the prime optic quality but am wondering if a zoom might be a better investment. If there is a good option for a manual focus prime that has awesome optics...I'm all in. I'm a student so budget is a major factor but I don't want to just buy something to buy it. I'll wait if there isn't a good wide prime option that I can afford. (I have a d700 and 50mm f/1.4G lens)
Thanks!

There is the samyang 35mm 1.4 with stellar reviews. Not sure if 35mm is a wide enough angle for you. If you have d700, there are many options, I suspect most would do unless you are an extreme pixel peeper. FX has much more wide angle options than DX especially in the prime area...

beth, what's your budget? how wide? and what's your intended use? that's what you have to start with. some lenses to consider would be the nikon 24/1.4G, the 14-24/2.8 AF-S, the 16-35 VR, and the 17-35/2.8. i'd also look at the tokina 16-28/2.8 and their new 17-35/4, the sigma 12-24, and, in the MF arena, the zeiss 18/20/24 primes as well as the CV 20/3.5.
me personally, i bought a used sigma 15-30/3.5-4.5 for under $200 and a used tokina 17/3.5 for $350 for my FF camera. the zoom gets used more, except when size and bulk are factors.are there sharper lenses out there in the corners? yes. does it matter? not as much as you might think. i'll probably get around to a 2.8 wide zoom or the 24/1.4G one of these days.

A used 20-35/2.8 AF Nikkor might be wide enough and a relatively affordable option ($400?).

I'm not sure if is enough wide for you but the old MF Nikkors 28/2 AI-S and 28/2.8 AI-S (CRC version) are both outstanding.
Also it's not cheap nor very expensive... the new Samyang 24/1.4 that is supposed to hit the market this month could be even a greater option.

Get the excellent 20-35/2.8 nikkor for your D700. I have one on my D700, and it cranks. Awesome value.

+1 vote for the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 - stunning. The older Tokina AT-X pro 20-35 f/2.8 is a nice lens as well. It just needs to be closed down a half stop to get rid of the softness it shows wide-open.
If you suddenly become rich then don't hesitate to get the 14-24mm AF-S G Zoom Nikkor. There isn't a prime to touch it for IQ at the wider end of its range.

Thanks!
I'm do mostly portraits, wedding, and engagements. I was looking at the nikon's 20mm 2.8 but that wasn't mentioned here. 200-600 is my budget. Thanks for the input so far! I'll research some of those options.

The 20mm f/2.8 is a well respected lens, but I think it's a bit too wide for weddings, and definitely too wide for portraits. It might seem good for the family group shot, but it will stretch the people at the edges, making aunt Wilma look too fat. The 28mm f/2.8 mentioned above is less extreme in focal length and is close to being world-class in performance. A 35mm fast prime is probably wide enough and is a good, natural view focal length. The 35/2 AF-Nikkor is very good. The 35/2 Zeiss ZF is better, but expensive--$900 to $1000 used, and is manual focus. I think for the fast-moving wedding situation a zoom might serve your purpose best. The 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 Nikkor would handle the whole wedding with one lens, and it's sharp enough and has great color saturation. It's not expensive. The 28-70 f/2.8 is a lot faster, and very high quality--but is heavier and more expensive.
