MB-D12 battery grip price

Barry Clemmons , Feb 08, 2012; 08:14 p.m.

Has anyone heard an explanation for the pricing on the new MB-D12 battery grip for the D800/D800E? The Nikon USA site shows SRP of $616.00. As I recall the most expensive grip to this point has been $295.00. I have always purchased the grip for any DSLRs I have owned in the past, but there will have to be something very special about this one for me to shell out that kind of cash.

According to Rob Gaibraith, the price for the MB-D10 MB-D12 is Canadian $429.95 in Canada, and typically Nikon products are more expensive over there. I assume the $616 price is some sort of error that will be corrected. If not, expect a lot of gray imports into the US and the third-party clone grips will sell very well. In that case the hard part will be to find the brand that works.

I don't think the $616 from Nikon is correct. I just ordered one from Adorama for $449.95, it will hopefully go down from there.

Throw in a couple of EN-EL 15 batteries and 616 is about right. $429 + 2x99 from Nikon.ca

Thanks for the responses. I expected it to be a little more expensive just based on the current yen/dollar. $449.95 is still more than I thought it would be, but I'm sure I'll end up justifying it in my mind. :)

Shun Just to correct you a bit the price for the MB-D10 in Canada that I can get it for is $339.99 just thought I'd correct that.

I thought I had corrected the model number. I was referring to the MB-D12 for the D800/D800E.

When I bought my D300 back in November 2007, I also bought an MB-D10 for the D300. I paid US$240 for it back then. The MB-D10 is for the D300, D300S, and D700. As far as I know the MB-D12 is essentially the same thing but updated to use EN-EL15 and EN-EL18 (battery for the D4) batteries. It seems strange that the MB-D12 is so much more expensive. As I said, if Nikon USA does not correct it, people will look for alternatives.

adorama now has the grip listed on its site -- price is $449.95. that's still pretty steep, but apparently there's no surprise in the box... just 2 battery trays (on for en-el15 and one for AAs).

After ponying up the $270 for an MB-D11, $230 for an MB-D11, $100 for the chintzy MH-21, and $400 for a repair that Nikon took ten months to perform (acutally, they never succesfully performed it, but that's a whole other story), I'm going to go ahead and say that Nikon is daft.

There is NOT $300 of extra parts and metal here compared to the other units.

The only defense I can see is that we're talking about an item which is technically not available to purchase yet, so until someone lays down the money and picks up the item, it's not REALLY that expensive. Still, MSRP on this is absolutely insane.

AA battery tray MS-D12 is extra. :( $60 US list.
