I have been hearing bad things about This company as well it seems like many of their Discounted items are actually more expensive then you would find them on more reputable sites. Addtionally once they have your email address you may as well expect that you will be getting mail from them until you die or change your email address.
Has anyone had similar experiences.

I am not sure what exactly you are complaining about. Amvona is NOT one of those bait and switch companies. Yes, they will send you promotional emails and of course you should check to make sure that they offer the best deal. I have bought from them before and everything went fine.

Many of the "list prices" at Amvona are a little high, but the way to buy from them, at least in the past when I did, was to bid on their eBay auctions. If you were patient you could get quite nice tripods and heads (some of them perhaps a little too close for comfort to the Manfrotto or other models they were copies of) for a good price. Their after-market support was difficult, but eventually somebody would respond.
I think their "clones" got them into trouble a while back, so I'm not sure what they offer right now. I just got an email from them yesterday, but that was the first in a long time.

I agree with JDM for I have bought from them via Ebay and got good results with no head aches at all : I got one of their tripods shipped to me for $79.00 which sell's higher to day,
I get their email from time to time and find their prices very competive~!

I've bought some backdrops and few other things from them with no trouble and don't get an abundance of email ads from them. I'd buy again without any fear.

I've bought from them. The boom stand arrived broken. I sent it back. Evenually they sent me a new one. Everything was OK.
The stand was much cheaper on EBay than it was in their website. And about half of what Calumet sells the same boom for today.
I have no complaints. And I just clicked "Don't send me stuff" and I've never heard from them again.

It's like a curse.... After not getting any email spam from Amvona in a long time, all of a sudden I'm getting tons of it. I'll have to open one of them and see if I can find that "don't send" button.
