The sound of silence. What noises do you enjoy and what do you grumble at?

Gerry Siegel (Honolulu) , Dec 01, 2009; 05:33 p.m.

There is an imported frog to our islands called the "coqui. ' It is noisy. But is it good noise or bad noise? Hah, a question.... Most hate its evening froggie love song. Yet a few like the sound and argue it is just part of the natural world, i.e. sex among Kermits.

So what sounds are familiar and do you find pleasing and/or aid to slumber? What sounds are less so, and yes, even intolerable?

- Here are some of my "good" sounds:

-Bird song in the early AM.- Gentle rain on the roof.- Any old Strauss waltz in the car. - the gentle purring of a cat naturally.

- Some of my really really gets under the skin sounds:

- Our reliable neighborhood motorcyclist who tunes up his bike on a Sunday morning.- The guy with the ninety speaker stereo system, with the giant bass module. Evenings are his favorite cruise time. -( Christmas music falls in between. In three weeks I will decide.) - roosters. ( A friend at the office who grew up on a farm just loved the birds. )
Love them or leave them depends on what we are accustomed to I guess. We found a way to quiet the world when we need to shut down and unstring the nerves.A clever gadget. Bose Acoustic Noise Canceling Headphones. They really work and seem to be selling well even at a stiff $300. 00. The price of 'shhh'-say,even most libraries are loud these days.- No more 'sshhh'..

Ok. What are your longstanding peaceful slumber-type sounds . What noises will usually get your digestion rumbling?. Maybe the chimes of a clock too... ( no comments on spousal snoring please! Keep domestic harmony for the holidays)

When we lived in Alabama, we had some swamp on our property and the frog and cricket noise was rampant. I liked it, as did my wife, but whenever my parents came over they couldn't stand being outside. It was loud.
I like the sound of thunder in the distance, rain as well. I also enjoy most forms of non-vocal music. Gunfire and fireworks, I also enjoy.
As far as sounds I dislike? I can't stand incessant pointless chatter in the background, whatever I'm doing. You know, people talking just to here the sound of their own voice.

#1 on my hate list? ANY cell phone ringtone.

Here at 7,000ft in Northern NM we get coyotes, who live in the arroyos. On a cold night they will start barking and have often come up on our patio. The barks are chillingly comforting.

A place I go camping every year over Memorial Day weekend has a catbird that starts in about 4 am every morning... the bird has a lot to 'say'... I'm really fond of the sound, and enjoy camping at that site, looking forward to it again and again. Rushing streams are another soothing sound I enjoy.
Among my major dislikes are police/fire sirens in the middle of the night.
Gunfire? I hadn't thought of that... I am kind of fond of cannon fire. But not too close.

I admire custom choppers and other motorcycles under the general heading of "Harley", but I can't stand that loud engine noise. You can hear them from a quarter mile away.

I'll immediately contradict myself and state that I love the sound of old aircraft with radial engines. Check YouTube for the crop sprayer scene in "North by Northwest" to hear what I mean. My dad flew a Stearman for a long time and my ears perk up at the slightest hint of that sound in the air.

Engine rumble (v-twin, dragster, dirt track sprint car, hot rod, the radial engines mentioned previously, old "thunderboat" hydroplanes, etc), I like. However, motorcycle straight pipe noise annoys me. See the South Park episode on the subject for my general feelings. Overall, noise that exists primarily to annoy or show-off to others isn't something I care for. I don't have a problem with bass bumping cars in concept, I like hip-hop and love to feel a song in my chest. But the fact that you are making someone else's life less enjoyable with your selfishness is what keeps me from ever putting a big stereo in my car. That and all the stereo stealing tweakers we have around here.

My dog hates thunder/fireworks more than just about anything in the world. Which is too bad, because I happen to love both. I used to love the sound of a strong wind storm. But now it just sounds like water blowing under the garage door and shingles leaving the roof. Hazards of growing up and becoming responsible I suppose.

Probably the most annoying noise for me is a rattle that I can't find in my car. Hmmmmm...maybe if I had that loud stereo I could just drown it out. Perhaps I should reverse my earlier statements.

I enjoy: a sweet Harley Davidson, snow, music, water (falls), my cats purring, silence, fire crackling...

I do not enjoy: a big loud crowd, dentist drill, snoring, squeaky brakes, garbage truck waking me up, kids screaming for no reason, cheesy cars trying to sound all hopped up...

Sounds I do like: The sound of the surf at night, the quiet of a predawn, kookaburras heralding the dawn, Magpies taking over at dawn, sleepy children making their way into the kitchen where Mum is and the gentle conversation that follows, toast being buttered, a cow lowing in the distance, the first cicada of the day, Jesu joy of mens desiring, children's laughter, Geordie dialect, ducati monster been given a fistfull, pink floyds "meddle", the slap of dominoes,
Sounds I don't like: Glass breaking, helicopters, dog fights, leaf blowers, traffic, nails on blackboards, Tammy wynette singing "stand by your man", Harleys.

Rose-Marie B , Dec 01, 2009; 08:59 p.m.

Sounds I like: The background sounds of nature, crickets, loons, coyotes, owls, frogs, the sound of the wind in the pines.
Waves rolling in on a beach, with an occasional seagull. Gentle waterfalls. The sounds of streams in late winter/early spring when the spring melt begins, there's something cheerful about that trickling sound. Ice breaking up and tinkling along the lakeshore.
The humming of an old refrigerator in the background. Beethoven's 6th Symphony, Pachelbel's Canon in D, Edvard Grieg's Morning. The contented snoring of my dog, as he hogs the lion's share of the bed. Helps me drift off to sleep until he starts dreaming and kicking. The crackling of the fire in the woodstove. The sounds of a good quality pair of scissors cutting fabric. A sewing machine running. The clack of knitting needles while I'm knitting.

Sounds that drive me nuts: Sarah Palin talking about anything. My cockatiels in the morning when I've forgotton to cover their cage the night before (dammit they're loud!). The hiss of the t.v. when it's cranked up loud and someone changes the channel and doesn't hit one. A radio that's slightly off-station, that same hiss. Rap and jazz music. Bratty kids screeching for no reason. People that smack and slurp while eating, or chomp and snap their gum. Some trucker or bus driver grinding gears. Bagpipes. Jackhammers. Stupid ringtones. Screeching of tires when someone has to brake hard, suddenly. A man snoring beside me. All this makes me cringe and complain in my best Grinch voice "the noise! noise! NOISE!"
