It was hard to watch the direction her life turned. A Shakespearean, a Greek-tragedy-scale case of hanging out with the wrong people. Ugh, what a waste.

Obviously she was trying to escape something in her life, what it was we will never know. It definately wasn't poverty, she came from a relatively wealthy family and made millions on her own...

Demons. Everyone has a long list to choose from; not just her. So sad.

The last time I saw Whitney was during her Oprah appearance a few years ago. At times she rambled almost incoherently about her drug use with husband, Bobby Brown, claiming she was back on the straight & narrow...but her erratic behavior said that she was quite likely as high as a Georgia pines, even as she spoke. It was painful to watch and to listen. While I suppose we shouldn't really be surprised by this tragic outcome, it doesn't make it any less difficult to accept.

By far my favorite Whitney performance was when she sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl back in the '90s. I was working out in a local gym at the time with a group of big, burly men...some of them world class athletes. By the time she finished singing, everyone in the room stood motionless, with tears running down their cheeks. That's the Whitney I'd like to remember.

Whitney had a talent and beauty that is rare in popular culture.

I've never had any of her recordings, but in memorium I played some Billie Holiday this evening. Billie was another artist whose life ended far too quickly, but whose legacy will endure.

Sad news. This woman was so talented and had the a vocal quality that was amazingly beautiful. I remember hearing her sing "Jesus Loves Me" in the movie The BodyGuard .. an entertaining movie as movies go .. but when she sang that simple song it was like hearing something unique and special for the first time ..

I also remember the Oprah interview mentioned above and was equally saddened to see her in that state of mind .. and then there were other incidents that made the news that were a bit foretelling of the problems she was facing. Indeed she shall be missed.

Always thought she was a shouter, not a patch on her Auntie, Dionne Warwick. Always sad to see someone go like this, prolonged drug use will find your demons.
