Samsung leaks K20D specs before Dubai...

Renato Aranghelovici , Jan 09, 2008; 12:59 p.m.

... and for me are disapointing...

14,6 Megapix CMOS sensor, but max ISO 3200 only, because is 1.5x... The launch price is 1200 Euro, probably 1200$.

The price in Norway is about 10% more than the K10D. Otherwise it looks like a K10D with a new sensor and live view.

Michael Kuhne , Jan 09, 2008; 01:57 p.m.

Nikon D300 is max ISO 3200, I believe. It appears like the shutter release is positioned more like my PZ-1p. Now if they'd put the top LCD behind the flash housing, and move the hot shoe to the right, and restore the built-in dual flash system, I'd be standing in line to get one.

Boris Bashutin , Jan 09, 2008; 01:57 p.m.

I was RIGHT, Renato. 14.6 MP (CMOS) SR Resistant to rain, sand and dust Double dust removal on image sensor 2.7" LCD Live view One-press raw ISO 3200

Not bad. No information about fps and sensor technology.

Javier Gutierrez , Jan 09, 2008; 02:00 p.m.

You know, I think no matter what Pentax would have come out with, some folks would have been disappointed. I for one am happy to see some progress...I know folks are saying it is a K10D with a new sensor, but is that really so bad? The way I see it, I already have spare batteries, a battery grip, many lenses, many sd cards, external flash etc...I will be more than happy to take it...As for the price of it, if it is U.S $1200.00, where else can you get a 14.6 MP camera for that price? Personally, I would rather have Pentax invest in more Lenses than bodies...

Michael Kuhne , Jan 09, 2008; 02:22 p.m.

The k10D design concept is outstanding and should be continued and improved.

Lindy Stone , Jan 09, 2008; 02:34 p.m.

Sweeet, samsung beat pentax to the 20 series announcements.

Looks like the Pentax K20D will be a nice ijmprovement over k10D.

CMOS....CMOS....CMOS. This alone should allow for higher a far cleaner ISO imaging. Live view and video. I like video as I never bought a video camera, ever.

Does the press release say who the builder of the Samsung 14mp CMOS is?

1,200 euros is like $1,800 usa dollars. That'll be a deal killer for me, for that kinda of money I want a dslr from a company that has a vast array of brand new glass options above 135mm, autofocus teleconverters, manual focus screens, ect... two weeks till pentax releases msrp, yea!

Renato,

For comparison, what is the current Euro price of the K10D?

Benjamin Kanarek , Jan 09, 2008; 03:46 p.m.

There are differences in the Pentax spec...;-)

Andrew Gilchrist , Jan 09, 2008; 04:12 p.m.

Lindy, international pricing isn't solely based on exchange rates. The guess that it will have a numerically similar USD price vs EUR or GBP isn't that far-fetched.

Lindy Stone , Jan 09, 2008; 04:42 p.m.

Well $1,200 would be better than $1800.

$1,800 is $300 less than EOS 5D and its full frame cmos which to me is far more appealing than the bells and whistles the samsung GX-20 offers.

Olympus E3 with its cool articulated viewscreen is still sitting at issue of $1,699

Nikon D300 is sony made cmos and it sits at issue of $1,799.

Canon 40D has shed away $150 so its buyable for $1,149 and the 6.5 frames per second to me is a standout feature for those who need imaging speed.

Interesting to see the "specs are different compared to pentax K20D". In the past the only differences have been body finish details, motordrive, software and warranty. It'll be great to see what else pentax' K20D version will add to samsung's GX-20 feature set.

In the Netherlands a K10D body will go for around 6oo euros.

Rick Gerbehy , Jan 09, 2008; 06:39 p.m.

Will the new Samsung DSLR's be available in the USA? Will Samsung sell the accessories to go with the cameras? I currently have the Samsung GX10 and I cannot locate a battery grip.

denys meunier , Jan 09, 2008; 07:28 p.m.

well its look like double price compare to the k10d,if the price is really 1800.00$ better go with nikon d300 or canon 40d,just saying pentax its a very good camera but don't forget nikon is very good to so for the same price,,,,,i'l go nikon,1200.00 or 1300.00$will be ok but not at 1800.00$,,,no way.

Pål Jensen , Jan 09, 2008; 07:30 p.m.

Look. I've already posted what the camera costs. 9995,- NOK. This is 10% more than the K10D costs in Norway. In other words, it is highly competitively priced.

Bill Poupore , Jan 09, 2008; 07:48 p.m.

>well its look like double price compare to the k10d,if the price is really 1800.00$

As the European based reader will atest, you can't simply do a currency conversion to get a North American price from a European price. If you could, they wouldn't have a perpectual complaint that they pay more than we do in NA.

>Look. I've already posted what the camera costs. 9995,- NOK. This is 10% more than the K10D costs in Norway.

And with the K10D here in Toronto going for $700 CAN that would put the price of the K20D WELL UNDER $1,000 USD. Which would make sense since it's an incremental upgrade over the K10d.

Michael Kuhne , Jan 09, 2008; 08:40 p.m.

Price is always higher for the first 5-8 months. This Pentax will probably have even more to offer than the Nikon D300. It will have fewer lens options as a system, but a much better selection for a compact camera backup model with better features, as part of a system.

Lindy Stone , Jan 09, 2008; 08:49 p.m.

I'd be interested in a pair of K20D at:

"10% above where the K10D is selling for now".

I'd upgrade both my 6mp samsungs for about $600 after I place the used dslrs in new homes, a no brainer!

I cannot imagine Pentax will issue the K20D for $700 a piece but if you all are certain this Cmos 14mp dslr will issue for 10% above what I can buy brand new K10D today for then I'm all in!

I guess we'll know for sure in 15 days, or just 360 hours...

Have we seen any confirmed reports of video yet?

Prices in US or Europe, Canada or Asia DO NOT reflect currency. Not generally. A great example was climbing gear in the late 90's most imported from france and italy to the US where the US dollar was stronger then the Euro by a 1=1.20 rate but oddly we paid more than europeans, but some of which was US product (5.10, metoliuos) being shipped to Europe and repriced at a LOWER price. I could actually order a US made product, shipped to europe, and then shipped back to the US for less than I could from the US direct. Crazy!!!

I really don't know what drives the pricing, but it's greater than VAT and import taxes and other issues. Eventually people found it was cheaper in the US to buy stuff from France and Spain via DHL shippment and when the local climbing shops and mail order places discovered this they closed the loophole, of course not before I bought about $2500 worth of gear for around $1000 (yeah, I saved $1500 including shipping and the meager duties taxed to me). Canada had the same issue, MEC is a outdoor co-op but for about 10 years they had the SAME sticker prices as US gear. Problem was the Canadian exchange rate for a while was in 1=1.65 which meant stuff was quite a bit cheaper to US. They banned shipping to the US of certain goods, but it didn't stop me from driving there to get it in person.

Beyond that I am wondering why people seem upset that it's a K10D with improvements. Had Pentax stuck with the PZ-1P design years ago it would have been able to build on a winner.

Redesigning something that ain't broke (as the saying goes) is foolish. But building upon sucess and tweaking refinement into a current design is brilliant.

Lindy, won't the K20D be half of issue in 12 mos? Why not wait 12 mos to get it at half off? And Samsung has been nonexistent from the US market. The samsung site showed about 10 lenses but you couldn't even get the Pentax kit lenses (or any lenses) with the Samsung brand. Samsung even announced the 35mm FA as a lens despite the fact Pentax was winding down it's production (and they are made at the same factory) I searched worldwide (europe mainly) and found any Samsung products scarce, perhaps Asia was different. People were mutilating K10D grips to fit the GX10 which listed a grip, but was vaporware to the rest of the world.

Nice!

Very nice, finally the 14MP sensor is (somewhat) officially confirmed. I don't get all the complainers saying it looks similar to a K10D, it's an "evolution" model so it'll look much like a K10D with some slight refinements, same as the K200D (leaked photos) vs K100D; Also, take a look at the Canon and Nikon lines, the 40D *still* resembles the ancient D30, while a Nikon D300 could easily be mistaken for a D200 if you're not paying attention; but no one complains about C&N, Pentax is an easy target for complainers. I'm excited about this new camera, but I don't think I'll buy one for at least 3-4 months after it shows up on store shelves, if not a little longer, my two K10Ds are doing a fine job. cheers!

Boris Bashutin , Jan 10, 2008; 07:31 a.m.

The picture is removed from http://www.aronsen.no/default.asp?ArtID=428 ...:)))

There is information that K20D could has a bit another design, ISO50 and 6400 and functional's things which GX20 has not. Samsung CMOS sensor doesn't use the same technology like Canon and Sony. It's important. Don't be afraid of 14 Mp APS-C.:))) It is not worse than 6 Mp.

Lindy Stone , Jan 10, 2008; 07:55 a.m.

Yes, the specs and pic of GX20 are gone. It was nice to see it and read about it before GX-20 with motor drive and Schneider K 12-24 f4 ED lens was removed. Anybody here clip and save the image and specs?

So two weeks or 14 days or 336 hours till the official K20D announcement hits.

Miserere Mei , Jan 15, 2008; 12:08 p.m.

Somebody asked about K10D prices Europe. At a local Circuit City type store in Spain I saw the K10D for ?900.

By the way, I've looked at the windows of every camera store I've passed here in Spain, and every single one of them had the K10D and K100D Super on display; I even saw a couple of people on the street carrying a K10D. There was certainly a lot more Pentax presence than I expected.

Miserere Mei , Jan 15, 2008; 12:09 p.m.

Maybe the euro sign doesn't show up properly for some people. The price I quoted for the K10D in my post above was 900 EUROS.

sean mclennan , Jan 23, 2008; 05:52 p.m.

Lindy, what array of brand new glass?

I'm a Canon shooter...used to be Pentax (in my film days)

I'm curious by your comment about Pentax not having an array of brand new glass, specificall above 135mm.

Who does?

Canon has maybe 4 new lenses that fit that category. Nikon has 3. The rest of their lenses are hardly brand new designs..some are 6 or 8 years old!

I'm often missed some of my old Pentax glass. There are some amazing lenses in Pentax's lineup!
