Un-believable

I lead my life by looking for people who teach me by example. I had 2, you are now the third. I really think your eye is something special, your work is outstanding, and thats an understatement.

Great portfolio

Love your work, and the type of images you concentrate on. Are you self-taught, or have you had formal training?

Karim Damien Ghantous , August 20, 2003; 07:15 A.M.

Tamara, I was going to say something about the fact that you used the same model for most of your photos. Then I realised that it was you! Well, if the camera likes you why shoot somebody else?

The tones of your images here are similar to cross-processed film, though I suspect that you used selective colouring in PhotoShop. I don't mind the look but it can be used by some photographers to hide their lack of skill with lighting and colour.

Out of all of these images there are two which stand out for different reasons but they both help make the same point. The point is this: like with anything - art, business, technology, policy - there is often a great difference between *intent* and *result*.

Take the picture called 'Angel' (1333004). It is a formal set-up, well lit and exposed with no disturbing background. And it's obvious what the photo is meant to show. And the image is in fact quite ordinary (but *not* poor). If it were obvious but beautiful then that would be enough. However, I am glad you included it.

The second picture I am talking about is 'Big Girl'. In terms of composition it's quite nicely done even though it doesn't follow 'classical' compositional rules. The girl has no clothes on and this is great because clothing would just be a distracting element that would ruin the picture's simplicity.

The title 'Big Girl' implies you were thinking of something totally unrelated to angels. Yet it is this image which strikes me as angelic, or as being of an angel, even though that might not be your primary intention. The girl has a contemplative expression, the lighting is bright and soft (but not sentimental, unlike those awful Hallmark cards) and the large, white expanse which takes up most of the frame is like light from heaven (well, it is from the sky isn't it?). The girl being naked implies purity - we assume angels are pure. Overall it's a fresh and calming image with a nice texture.

So you see what I mean - you tried to make an angel with 'Angel' but ended up with an ordinary photo. Yet with 'Big Girl', a more sensitive and evocative photograph, you were more expressive, more free in your style. And so you made a photo which has a different meaning for different people.

In fact, photos like 'Angel' may go very well with the sorts of people who refuse to accept that images can - or must - have depth and that can be understood on different emotional levels. Because photography is visual, it seems that it can only be superficial! These people would look at 'Big Girl' and probably assume you did something 'wrong', because part of the image is not clear, the lighting is too untamed and the girl's hair doesn't have a bow in it. Subconsciously they might like it, but their conscious mind, conditioned to never ask questions, to never think differently, will put up resistance. Heaven forbid that a photograph's point is not immediately obvious!

One more comment about 'Big Girl'. It's a good photo to view at a small size as you can see the nice 'S' shaped line made by the subject's hair and body.

If you were to ask me for one piece of advice I would ask you to increase the variety of subject matter. Most of these photographs are portraits and most have a similar tone to them. Some of them should be cut from the portfolio altogether.

If I only liked a few images here then my time spent viewing this portfolio was justified. All the best for the future. You mentioned that you never received formal training in photography (about half of the world's top photographers never did, either). If I were you I wouldn't change that!

Laura V. , August 20, 2003; 11:10 A.M.

Thank you for posting. This is, hands down, the best portfolio I've seen on photo.net. Some of the best photos I've seen anywhere. It inspires me, as a beginner with no formal training, that you were self-taught also. Keep posting!

William Nicholls , August 20, 2003; 11:42 A.M.

Very strong work when narcissistic, weak when dealing with other subjects and styles. The fantasy set is the weakest of the lot.

I'm not personally into arty-fashion images, but your work is certainly marketable. At least if you can do as well when the photographer isn't the subject.

Tamara L. , August 20, 2003; 12:51 P.M.

Thank you all for your support. I have received some great comments and wonderful e-mails lately.

Style is a difficult subject. It s not something I have planned, I just do what I do naturally and some people see it like style.

-re to Roberto No, not yet

-re to Kraim

Thanks for your time. It's an interesting point. Well the "Angel" did not come with great plan. The kindergarden my daughter is attending was preparing for carneval so they were masquerading in angels. As any parent I took the picture while she was getting ready. It was cute to me but not pretentious. "The big girl" was called like that, cause it was one of those moments when you see your little girl as a whole person.

Eric McMillan , August 20, 2003; 01:58 P.M.

Wonderful work! You seem to have a great eye for capturing people - thanks for sharing your images through this portfolio! I also do a lot of self-portraiture - in my case by necessity. My family members are all sick of posing while I try endless light variations and so on... I'm not aware of any specific coverage on self-portraiture on photo.net, I think it would make an interesting subject. Again, great work!

jon hynes , August 21, 2003; 12:38 A.M.

Very rarely do I see portrait work that truly captivates me. So much so, that I think about it long after. I'm a novice but I must give praise to your work. The high-key lighting is terrific for helping the beautiful eyes you and your family were blessed with come to life. It would truly be a shame if you stopped creating self-portraits. Your beauty is only exceeded by your talent for caturing/portraying emotion and beauty in your art. I'm stunned to say the least. Best wishes/good luck and please, let us know if you publish anything, create a website, etc

Peter Towler , August 21, 2003; 05:25 P.M.

Stunning!

Your images are incredible, and what I admire most is the fact you ARE able to do so much with just one subject (yourself). Too many photographers use different subjects to create variety in their portfolio instead of finding new ways of showing the same subjects. By staying with the same model you are forcing yourself to grow ... pushing yourself to find new ground for the next shot. Every image you have shown here is fresh because you have purposely made it that way, not because one model has a stonger jaw and another has different styled hair. I adore your work, Tamara. You are beautiful. You are talented. You are truly inspiring. Please don't change a thing.

Beautiful, inspiration, stunning work. One comment, I'd love to see a photo where the model is smiling and showing teeth! Not one of your fake smile for the camera pix, but a smile radiating joy and happiness. Great job -- I am envious!

Amazin'

Tamara, I absolutely adore your photos. They almost have a surrealism to them that makes them glow. What kind of camera do you shoot with and do you do your own developing or send them to be developed? Absolutely, amazin'!

Brad Bradley , August 23, 2003; 08:28 A.M.

Tamara, You have a wonderful body of work. And from one self taught photographer to another I suggest to you do not let anyone tell you to abandon any part of what you have learned to do. You must have a strong inner voice telling you very good ideas as your work clearly shows. Love your work with the children. All the best to you, thanks for sharing, Brad

Peta . , August 23, 2003; 05:29 P.M.

Tamara. Congrats!

You have such a beautiful portfolio, I have long admired your style. I am sorry this is the first time I've seen it en masse and I am astounded at your work. Just so many wonderful images.

I noticed you were one of the first to ever comment on my portfolio, it wasn't until recently I knew you could even view them like this. So I thank you too for your support of my work. :)

Dave Wesolowski , August 24, 2003; 12:38 A.M.

Hmm

Some excellent pics there. But the porfolio is extremely repetitive overall. Also, a few of the more cliched images really need to go.

Jack Kratoville , August 24, 2003; 11:34 A.M.

Ditto Accolades

All the above accolades are well-deserved and I'd like to point out an obvious fact. Tamara had no formal training to get these images. That means if you're looking to find your own style, your inner-talent; make your mark on photography - go forth and find it behind the lense of your own camera instead of some school that tries to teach an entire class the same philosophy. Study the pictures of those you admire and try to duplicate. Then follow your own instincts. It may not win straight thumbs up, but if you really enjoy what you're going after; it will show. More importantly, your work will grow.

Nice work Tamara. Maybe it does help to have a pretty face! :)

mart van genugten , August 24, 2003; 01:59 P.M.

rough

congratulations on the amount of great reactions that you recieved. You have a good eye for photography. But, what i miss in this portfolio is the roughness and purity of the photographed reality. there is only softness and manipulation of reality. although it is flattering to the eye (as is any beautifull person in almost every way) i miss meaning or ideas. think about it, i hope it can help you.

Authentic Artistry

Do not listen to ANYONE. Just keep doing what you do. People are only seeing their shortcomings in your work if they criticize it. Your art is real and it must remain only yours. Don't ever stop!

Avatar Oesterly , September 09, 2003; 09:55 P.M.

I concurr!

Do not listen to anyone about their criticism of your work. Your intuitive image creation is superb, I like that you take chances with your work, but don't let the image manipulation be your end-all answer to all of your image creation. I'd actually love to see you work in Black & White in the pure sense. You seem to have such superb insight on your subjects, I'll bet you'll have great results with a few more image styles too. Keep up the great work! You may not want to listen to me either, I'm just suggesting you try a few different approaches to your image colors that you haven't done before. -Avatar-

Hannah Shikh-Salim , September 10, 2003; 11:23 P.M.

Amazing work. I love your expirimentation, it makes your photos so much more orginal and interesting then most portraits. Most photos of the human figure or face has been used so many times it becomes bland, but your interpritation and expirimentation in creativity makes it so much more interesting.

Forgive me, I think its silly to tell this talent to PUSH herself! What do you think you are looking at? These ARE her pushes! She obviously doesn't need motivation, just the time to do the process, to let the art emerge. Just do. You're all you need, and Tamara, Thank you.

overall impressions

what i want to say overall, despite having been critical (hopefully constructively) of one or two individual photos, is that your work's significance lies in its presentation as a series. i think the majority of people don't understand what it means to shoot (or paint, draw, compose) series-based art. there is an autobiographical, documentary component as well as an aesthetic continuity that is being studied here. while individual pieces taken on their own might come across as "commercial" and even flawed, the body of work as a whole is the more important consideration. i believe the editorial decision to feature your work so prominently on photo.net is based on your exploration of a very unique and personal style. i wish you all the best and continued inspiration in what is surely a labor of love. best, edward

Hi Tamara - I have just joined photo.net today - what stunning work. I am a complete amateur - but to me you have given a combined modern/classic feel. I especially love the photos of your daughter. Would you possibly be able to answer some photographic questions I have! Regards Helen Panzer!

Travis . , September 22, 2003; 07:51 A.M.

Pretty pictures of pretty people of pretty colours. How much post processing (PS) work was done to these images?

How much of them were straight from the camera?

Seems to me there're too much repetition of subject choices as well.

Not inspired. But lovely work. Thanks for sharing.

music heard with the eyes

I am not a musician, but when I hear the beautiful music of a great composer, even for the first time, there is a deep emotional response. It is as if I have been touched in a special place. Whenever I hear the piece again, the emotion returns. Forever.

Neither am I a photographer, but seeing your work evokes exactly the same reaction.

hm..

s postovanjem. Luka.

Hvala Luka

Pozdrav

Tamara

Leendert Combee , October 01, 2003; 05:23 A.M.

Interesting...

Interesting set of images, certainly I find the selfportrait series has given a lot of room for experimentation with the same subject (yourself). Some images are very strong, such as "simple", "glass eyes", "hey jude" and "part" which literally force the viewer to look - one cannot escape those eyes! (for some viewers they clearly are too much of a good thing ;-) These high-impact images show that grabbing attention does not require "body talk" (from this series only "body" has some real punch, I think at least), as most often: the eye has it all...

Because many of the self-protrait images have lots of similarities there is also much to learn for a viewer by comparing each image for the strong and weaker points.

Other images such as some of the "moody" images (rainy day, nothing left to loose, guilty, i think i hate you, the things you left behind) are more like "lifestyle" images with good technique and composition but still lack some of impact of the ones I mentioned earlier.

My favourite images: something like "apart it" (but maybe included a little more on the right) and "simple".

Good luck, just got onto photo.net so have not much to show here myself - just yet. Leendert Combee/l_combee@yahoo.no

ignore the gits

From one woman to another, I'm not a "knight in shining armor" out to "save" you. You have amazing talent, incredible beauty, and an obviously happy family. Do not hide it or think you should be ashamed or downgrade yourself. The guys who are encouraging you on this site are doing just that: encouraging you. If you were an ugly man taking photos of yourself you wouldn't get some of the pointless remarks I don't care to further repeat. Be strong, be proud, and ignore those who are obviously jealous and have nothing to say to help you improve your already incredible talent. You're an inspiration and I hope to see more of your work, including the photos you take of yourself, in the future.

Filip Chen , October 18, 2003; 05:10 A.M.

I really love your style, you have a great eye for these photos. These are the kinds of photos when I think of beautiful photographs, not to say that all other photos on the site arent up to par but these seem really idyllic to me. I think I tend to see things in a similar style to yours but you execute it much better than I can right now. I hope to be able to take photos like you someday, your work is definitely inspirational. ..gives me something so shoot for.

BTW what happened to that photo of an ocean view cliff taken from the back of a truck with someones feet on the bottom? I apologize if its not one of your photos but could someone please point me in its direction? I want to use it for an art project of mine. Thanks

Funny,walk this way...always!!!

Filip Chen , October 22, 2003; 01:00 A.M.

Yes, that was the one. Thanks! Is it one of your photos?

Tamara L. , October 22, 2003; 01:21 A.M.

Yes, it's mine and it's very dear to me.

Filip Chen , October 22, 2003; 04:47 A.M.

How come it was taken off your album? Do you have a larger version of it? That photo looks like how a memory would look like in my mind, its very nice.

Tamara L. , October 22, 2003; 10:56 A.M.

Re

I have put it two times on this site but I felt like it was completly misunderstood. Everyone was complaining about the feet. I took this photo while me and my husband were traveling. I love to travel and usually when we are driving in the car and I feel happy, free and excited I put my feet in the air (offcourse when I am not driving). That photo was simbol of my freddom and happines and without the feet it's not it.I am happy that someone has rememberd that photo and saw more in it than just photo of nature. I have it in large format. I use it like a wallpaper from time to time.

Filip Chen , October 24, 2003; 01:35 A.M.

I know what you are talking about, I feel the same way. It does symbolise freedom and happiness from my eyes. To me the photo looks somewhat plain without the feet but the way you composed it conveys that message exactly, at least to me it does.

Do you think you can send me a larger version of it?

Thanks

BRAVO!

Tamara...I have spent the last few hours looking at this portfolio, digesting it, and looking some more - and this work is good....I mean really really good!! I am a newbie to this community, but from what I hae seen so far this work is unique to this forum, and the fact that you are self taught makes it even better. I sense some frustration on your part about the critical nature of some of the posters and comments they have made, and what I would say to you is that to discontinue this work would be an injustice, to both you and all those who feel the work is worthy! Avedon once said: "A portrait photographer depends upon another person to complete his picture. My concerns are not his. We have separate ambitions for the image. His need to plead his case probably goes as deep as my need to plead mine, but the control is with me." Avedon also said: "A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion. There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them are truth." Try to take these words to heart. Photography and art are both highly subjective, people either like the work or they don't. The important thing is whether or not "YOU" like the work you have presented, and if you do then let the criticisms run off your shoulder like water off a duck - because in the end you cannot please everybody...and in fact I am not sure it would be good even if you could...its only important that YOU like it, and those of us who like the work as well will supoort the work. I would hope that you will continue this work, its good, its unique, and its worth has been proven over and over again by the following you already have here...Keep it up..

Don

Tamara, you have shown that great photography can be created from very little. At home with family and camera you have created great photography, there are no snapshots here.

I like your portfolio quite a bit as it represents you in many different ways. I don't know you but I can see your sensual side, maternal instinct, imagination and intimacy expressed as themes in your photos. You bring across ideas in your photos with quality and obvious passion. Well Done Mike

Input from a beginner

Your portfolio is amazing. The images are exactly the type of thing I see in my mind's eye when I take a photo, but of course it doesn't quite turn out like yours. I would be very interested to learn what you do (lighting, lenses, etc) to get the results you do. If you have some spare time, please email me. Thanks! -Tracy Mort

Actually tough this is done with talent and skill you show nothing of your self. Small smile, melancholia, beautifull face and figure, daugther huge eyes, loved husband face... some friends faces... But you nearly always choose the no moment. The time were nothing happens. For you to take a picture is to isolate a people from its context (place, time, feelings and action) to show as little of one...

uuuu

oci i oci i OCI! da ja imam takve oci mogao bi autoportrete i izlagat al posto nemam brodi su mi sudbina. dobra si fotografkinja!!!!

Marko Peric , January 04, 2005; 05:28 P.M.

Tamara L. , January 05, 2005; 12:42 P.M.

Marku

Slozila bi se ja s tobom.Dok sam studirala razvijala sam slike rucno.

Hi Tamara

I just spent so time looking over your portfolio and your images are truely stunning. You have such a unique signaute style that is so captivating. Each one of your images seems to have gone through a lot of forethoughts. They are extremely well put together and I really enjoy learning from them. I also noticed that you shoot with an Olympus E-20, one of my favorite camera. Great images, great work, wonderful portfolio.

Stunning

Where to begin....A pleasure to discover this treasure of photographs, made my day. Captures like 'Simple' could have easily been taken by Dorothea Lange. I find 'Love' & 'Two' enchanting. 'Pure' & 'See You' are stunning...while Photos like 'Smoke', 'Summer Time', 'Guilty', 'Bickle' & 'Ivan' are just wonderful photographs. Sexy does not even begin to describe 'Simplicity', 'Inside', 'L', 'Jeans', 'Znak', 'Red Wine' & 'Belly'. Truly, what a wonderful little journey it has been to peruse your work. Looking forward to coming back this way again. Cheers

Stefan Tjarks , April 14, 2005; 02:42 P.M.

Hello Tamara, many of the photos in your folder are really excellent and show a lot more originality and quality than mine, but I also have to say, that I'm a bit tired of seeing one self portrait after the other, with cross dev colours and the slightly distorted face of yours. Your photos profit also from your beautiful face, but I guess you're not an actor, as there is not much variation on behalf of expression. So more self portraits don't add more artistical or whatever information and your style becomes sheer formalism. But I want to say it again, roughly one third of your portfolio I enjoy very much.

Stefan

Dan Hu , April 14, 2005; 08:12 P.M.

Love your stuff

Truly inspiring! Others mentioned cross processing, are these in fact cross processed? I am a beginner and shooting in digital... not sure if you have any photoshop techniques to pass along in order to achieve the same types of color/contrast as cross processing. The more and more I look at other photos, i do find myself drawn to the taste of cross processed photos. Thanks for any advice you have to give.

WOW!

Hi, Tamara.

I saw your photos before I saw you...or so I thought. I had commented on one of your photos that having a beautiful model is half the battle. Now that I've learned your best photos are self-portraits, I'm even much more impressed.

I think you are one of the most beautiful models I've seen on this website, though your modesty won't allow you to admit it. And to think you actually captured yourself so perfectly so many times is incredible.

Your work is lovely and fascinating. I'm especially a fan of your self-portraits, because of the subject.

Thank you for sharing so much beauty with all of us.

Hi Tamara.

Zadivljena sam tvojim radom. Znam da se u umjetnosti nemoze nista forsirat zato: keep your eyes open and have your camera ready. She is so beautiful. Bye the way meni najdraza fotka je ona sa stopalima. Razlog: Ja radim istu stvar.

Brad Bertagnole , August 15, 2006; 02:19 P.M.

Interesting

I would expect so many self-portraits to look very tired and boring; however, that is not the case here. You've given yourself so many different looks and shots that an amazing amount of life has been breathed into one subject-you! For that I say well done! HIGH MARKS ON YOUR PORTFOLIO!

I would keep going with that, which begs the question how do you talk to and direct yourself? What do you call yourself when you are photographing you? (These questions are meant in jest.) I am very curious however about you photographing strangers. Perhaps this is not your interest and that's fine. But I would be curious to see just the same, whatever path you take GOOD LUCK!

Amazing...

I was captured by your photograph titled, "Missing You" and soon found myself completely immersed in your collection of work. What an amazing photographer. I wish I could spend a month just watching you work, seeing what you see, learning what you know - or as much as I could in a month! By far, yours is the most meaningful collection of photographs I've seen on PN. Thank you so much for sharing what means much to you, and for inspiring myself (and those like me) to keep pursuing that plateau that you've so eloquently reached. Bravo, my friend. Tamara,

You truly have captured the spirit of a woman through your pohotographs. Your pictures are worth more than a thousand words; each and everyone of them has an intriguing story with them. Tamara, I was attracted to an image of yours (Tarcica) and thought I would take a look at your portfolio. From there I was overwhelmed with images that in my opinion are some of the best I have seen here on PN. I will be spending a great deal of time in your portfolio hoping to absorb something that will allow me to produce even one image as good as any of yours. I am so glad to have found you.

Your portraits are fresh and original. I love the lighting and like the composition of them. So many portraits I see are traditional, and often dull, so yours really stand out. I'm hoping to learn more about portraiture, and I have a lot to learn from looking at your work.

...and this thought...

...it was the penetrating quality of your eyes that seemed too strongly emphasized that captured my attention, but the candor with which you reveal yourself in your expression won my heart, and led me closer, and closer, to imagine myself there in conversation with you, if I looked away you might move an arm or lift a finger, no part of you in each picture is superfluous, quite the opposite--seeing one side of your foot, my eyes searched to see the other side, I listen to hear what your ears hear, your scent wafts around me like a lucid dream. You are jasmine, you are gardenia, you are wisteria, you are woman, you are related to everything, forever.

Un abrazo, Michael

MORE SUBJECTS

Hi, Tamara, Your portfolio is interesting and there are many lovely images in it but I agree with someone else in before critiques, that you abuse on certain subjects and a photographer should have a wider way of view things, people, occassions to shoot, and take photos of some other things. For instance, to be positive: one of the most interesting images for me, based on originality, were the groups of photos called "can we talk" and "how do you choose", both like "short stories". In the first you suggest tobacco and coffee as good company with talking to others and that´s interesting, it is also nice the way you distribute things or objects over the table. The other short story "how do you choose" seems to be the ethernal critical moment for many people (men) that accompany their couples (women) to a shoes shop and she needs to choose, ooh, uuuh, aauuuuh, which ? why ? color ? it suits you with ?... it is really an ethernal subject and you capture it OK. Come on, Tamara, you´ve got the photographer eye, now be brave and try other subjects; all we will be happy to see the results. Ikusi arte - basque language see you. Josemi Gondra. P.D.: Croatia seems to be a lovely country to photo outsides, pls. would you show it to us ?

Dave Deacon , March 04, 2009; 10:58 P.M.

Variety

Hi, overall I like your photos mainly because you are an attractive woman - men seem to respond with their fancies. I do, though, think there is a boredom factor in your shots in that they all look much the same. You need variety in there. There is a somewhat trite but appropriate saying: less is more. :)

davide spe , July 09, 2009; 08:24 A.M.

A great work...

Tony Azzopardi , July 19, 2009; 12:00 A.M.
