You have a terrific eye - and you appear to do naturally what I find very difficult, which is to get low and close. You've got some superb examples of how doing that can result in a stunning photo. For someone who started roughly the same time I did, I'm feeling a little jealous :) Very nice body of work so far!

Michael,
thanks a lot for the comments you have made to my photos and thanks a lot for sharing your work with others in photo.net. One thing we have in common is that we are both relatively new to photography and share the same excitement searching our style and experimenting into different types of photography.
I enjoyed looking at your portfolio in the portraits you have made and especially to your new works. I like the photos that you take because they are adventurous showing things in a novel personal manner using different angles and using different styles. I also like how you can focus your attention to details that usually go unnoticed and get interesting photos out of them...
yours,
Vasilis

Michael,
amazing images, you trully use photography to point out details that are not easly seen, no matter what it is, a baby or a forest. I hope to see more of your work here, and thank you for sharing your vision of world with us.

My thanks, James, Erin and Mark. I have a growing fondness for monotone images - I just feel a greater connection with the subject somehow. Yes, the Ruby Project has a special place in my heart. I like my work being labelled 'sentimental'. Thank you. As for seeing details, well, I am constantly amazed at how much more of the world I 'see' as my photography skills (and myself!) mature. M :)
J Moore , December 11, 2005; 12:23 P.M.
Michael, I am honored that you gain inspiration from my work and must say that your work is filled with just as much talent, if not more, than mine. For someone who took up photography just recently, you sure have an eye for capturing 'stories,' even in your portraiture. I believe that some of us are just born with that eye to see and capture amazing things with a lens. I whole-heartedly believe that you too have that eye, and I'm glad you are putting it to good use. Keep uploading new work and feel free to let me know if you'd like me to look at something in particular. J

Thank you, Ms D. I work very hard to capture the 'true' expressions of my subjects. Tight head shots tend to accentuate these expressions - hence my use of this compositional technique. Thank you for taking the time to provide such positive comments on my work. I do appreciate it. M :)

Oh, thank you all for such warm comments. They have really made my hectic day a whole lot easier to get through...
"I had the same feeling that reading a good book gives me... wishing that it would not end." - Janis, that is just an incredibly wonderful thing to say about my work. I am touched.
Mark, fresh is good - real good. I always aim to be a little different. No formal training in anything at all to do with photography or art - I have a dual degree in anthropology and archeology ;) The 'fire' consumed me one day and I have been passionately learning ever since.
Jim, I'm very happy the tonal qualities of my work hold appeal to you... keep shooting? I can't stop...

Dawn, you like hands too? I find them utterly fascinating - so much life in them! I'm very happy that I am able to portray my beautiful subjects in such an emotive manner. The more I practice my craft, the more I believe that the camara/photographer can indeed capture a little sliver of a person's soul...
Erik, my thanks. Actually, I was pleasantly surprised when I visited your portfolio - it is about as far from my own work as one can get! It was very refreshing for me to experience your view of the world. Catch you later...
Todd, I have been visiting your portfolio regularly for a while now. Your portraits, especially your monotones, are imbued with life and character - intangible qualities which I aspire to in my own work. Thank you. M :)
Paul Deans , May 18, 2006; 01:35 P.M.
Talented fella
Yes. We do share the same philosophy which I think is what is great about photo.net. bringing people together who enjoy the same thrills and are thrilled in the same way. Ken Rockwell says that "The camera's only job is to get out of the way of making photographs." This is true and an extension of this can be made with regards the studio. It isn't needed for what we are doing. It stifles and chokes the soul of the model.
Your shots are beautiful. You have used the camera as a tool to get the job done. You don't need the equipment and so none of these things hamper you.
having said that there is always room for some PS :0)
Thanks for your comments on my portfolio.
Take care and now I know of you, you better believe I'll keep an eye out for your work.
Thanks Michael,
kind regards,
Paul

, June 25, 2006; 07:54 P.M.
Thank you, Paul, Clive and Willemjan... your thoughts on my work certainly makes my day and reinforces my belief in my approach to photography. In my portraiture, I am constantly striving to capture the true essence of my subjects. It is an elusive quality and an ambitious goal... however, that just makes it all the more alluring for me... I feel I am getting better at capturing the 'soul' and hopefully, my photography will grow and mature over the years. I love photography, but just as importantly for me, I hope to 'infect' my subjects with a similar sense of passion. I strongly believe that truly emotive photography is achieved from a blend of photographer and subject connecting at a subconciously level... M :)

"The camera's only job is to get out of the way of making photographs."
Paul, very true. Sometimes we are too caught up in the tools of our trade and neglect to focus on what is the most important element in portraiture - the subject.

Tim Hutchins , June 26, 2006; 12:49 A.M.
This is Tim from Darwin. Thought I'd let you know that I finally got my first wedding shoot last Saturday. The couple were told last Wednesday that their photographer couldn't make it so I accepted with only 4 hours notice. I needed the practise so I had a crack. I was happy with some of the photos but know that many could be better. If I had more time to organise things it woud have been heaps better. Never the less I gave it a go and enjoyed the experience. Hopefully I'll get a few more before the Wet Season. Let me know what you think!!
From the photos in your gallery I like the square format ones because they remind me of an old camera I used to have that produced square frames.
ester j , July 17, 2006; 10:22 A.M.
Hi Michael, I think your photos are wonderful. I think its the combination of the detailed skin tones, the lighting, the composition and most importantly, the connection one feels with your sitters. Each convey emotion and that is my second favorite aspect of your photography. My favorite is your knack of knowing just how much space to give each sitter (model), its just the right amount inclusion, perfectly balanced. Because of this, the emotional aspect of the photo, becomes even more pronounced. Lovely photos, best wishes, ester

Hi Michael
Thanks for your kind comments on this image.
Nikon D100 14mm 2.8 aspherical lens. Metered off the mid tones. shot @ f16, 2 seconds iso 200 As you know this location is set in the rainforest so I shot at 1230 as the sun is high enough to provide lighting on the falling water at that time. Terrific portfolio full of personal, real, and compelling photographs. Your work just goes to show that you can do things with a natural feel, unposed and genuine, and yet be very creative. You see things in your own way, not letting that way or youself get IN the way of the subjects or the photo. Your photos are charming, endearing, thoughtful, and downright fun and nice to look at.

Amazed!
An incredible talent your one!
All your portraits are unique.
The composition is always beautiful, but your post-processing is sublime...

Michael,
I had to comment on your portfolio for this reason. Your photographs seem so natural and not all P/S. Now you may do a lot of post productive touch ups-- my amazement is it doesn't look it. The subtle way in which you present the subject is close to pure photography and less digital 'magic tricks'. I hope to someday-present photographs that are closer to the original of what I photographed and not doctored up. Thanks for this beautiful portfolio in which I will study and hope to learn from. Thanks for sharing your talent with this 'wanna- be'! <>< Sonny <>< p.s. the way you capture the models eyes is breath-taking, seems like a signature trait with your photo's.

G'day Michael
Great portfolio Michael! Simply gorgeous portraits. You certainly have some lovely models in Brisvegas. One day I'd love to have half your talent and vision. I'd better get out and start practising. Cheers from Sydney, Dan

Once again, a very heartfelt 'thank you' to all of you who have taken the time to express your thoughts on my work. Thank you.
Many people ask me how I capture such 'life' in the eyes of my subjects... I think it comes from an understanding that if you want 'life' out of your subjects, you need to find ways to empower them during the session - give them the confidence to be themselves, to be human, to reveal their beauty, to unburden their inner turmoil if needed. Give them space.
The more I learn about portraiture, the more I understand that people photography is not about the camera and your equipment - it is about your ability to emotionally 'connect' with your subject through the lens. That is where the 'life' comes from...
OK, enough talking from me... lets all go practice our wonderful craft of photography...
M :)

The last comments can be the opening line for your book. Can I quote you?? ;) Cheers, Dan

Hello Friend!
Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.
I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.
Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting
Ken

Comments
Hi Michael!
I think that in your portfolio there are many very-very-good shots, both for aesthetic and originality aspects. Many of them are really under-evaluated by viewers, and this is the first time that I say that I'm really surprised about it: it would be relly usefull that people add comments and critiques to low rating not for a sort of competition, but just to understand what could have been done better in shared images. Anyway, my compliments.
