Tim Holte , January 02, 2004; 10:24 P.M.

A lesson in quality over quantity. Instead of "Smila's Sense of Snow" it should be "Stefan's Sense of Style". Truly marvelous portraits, will motivate me in 2004. Thank you from Milwaukee!!!

Kim Slonaker , January 13, 2004; 10:15 P.M.

No "smiley" faces in your portraits, but they are very strong and original images. I've enjoyed looking at your work.

Nana Sousa Dias , February 23, 2004; 11:35 P.M.

Great stuff! I love the way you compose in the square format.

Troy Hamon , February 26, 2004; 03:07 A.M.

Stefan, thanks for stopping by my portrait presentation 'family as individuals'. Your work is absolutely stunning, which you probably already know. The Morocco folder is interesting because each photo is very powerful, but viewed as a group in the folder context it is almost overwhelmingly busy. It almost makes it difficult to look at each one individually. 'Peace of mind' is my favorite, an incredible collection of 4 photos, and the 'single photos' folder is a close second. Great work, thanks for sharing.

Renata Paskal , March 10, 2004; 11:56 A.M.

Hi Stefan Rohner. They are all very impresive images( i hope im using the right word), but one in particular.I know im gona keep it in my mind for a while now. Thanks. Renata Paskal.

Marc Aubry , July 02, 2004; 02:56 P.M.

You have a beautiful portfolio! Congratulations

Ted Carter , July 09, 2004; 02:33 P.M.

Stefan, Lots of folks here have used terms such as "beautiful" and "stunning" to describe your portfolio. Though these are appropriate, I would also use some others; "real," "honest," "gritty," "unfiltered," and "direct." I love your stuff, and look forward to seeing more!

Pat Budd , July 09, 2004; 03:18 P.M.

Superlative Work!!!

ART!!!!

Genial!!!!!!

Cristian C. (Barcelona) , September 03, 2004; 09:17 A.M.

To you one more one less compliment won't make much of a difference, but futile as it may be I want to congratulate you.

As said by Tim Holte your work inspires me to try even harder, but at the same time reminds me of how difficult it is "to make them really good." Greetings and congratulations again.

Manolis Spanakis , September 04, 2004; 02:10 P.M.

It is hard to be the last in an impressive list of people who have already said everything. But I ment to be here, among them, even if I just have to repeat someone else's comment. Well, I choose Ektor's description for your entire portfolio and for every single picture in it.

Frederic Pascual , September 28, 2004; 05:03 A.M.

Eres un maestro.....

Martin Wilmsen , October 04, 2004; 04:10 P.M.

Some people have got "it" and you are certainly one of them. This is such a super portfolio. One of the best on photo.net

Adrian Boughey , November 02, 2004; 05:46 P.M.

Thankyou!

This is the best portfolio I've seen on photo.net. Wow! I love portraiture and I love b&w, and you've brought them both together magnificently. Truely inspiring. Congratulations! Pls continue to share your work and comments with us all.

Philippe Rapoport , November 11, 2004; 04:21 P.M.

You're a master, no doubt. I deeply admire your work. Most of all, I'm incredibly touched by the human meaning of your images. Friendship, kindness, sadness, humour, mystery. I don't know what is the most admirable: to have that in your eyes and in your heart, or to capture it so well. Thousand thanks. Philippe

REGINALD BARRAS , November 14, 2004; 08:01 P.M.

Stephen Crary , December 01, 2004; 01:39 P.M.

Another admirer

I really enjoy you photos and style. Just add me to the list (seems like a long one) of admirers of your photography.

Guillermo Labarca , December 01, 2004; 03:35 P.M.

I have been watching your portfolio all afternoon; it has been a very rewarding experience, but very demanding as well. It has been very intense; therefore tiring (I say this in a complementary way). I won't say anything about the technical side because I can't say anything meaningful that you don't know. As for the artistic meaning of it there is a lot to say. In the first place you have a definite style, your photos have a recognizable seal; perhaps you may find influences from other photographers, but assimilated in a way that makes that yours are clearly yours. What impresses me it is that the style is appropriated to the message, idea, concept or whatever you want to convey. It is true that you have shown here different subjects, from a Morocco wedding to a tortured world of fantasy, but all of them show an undercurrent of deep emotions full of pathos. I don't know if you would accept it, but even those photos called peace of mind are showing a kind of tension that is more evident in your other series. I see too that although your photos show a material world, where textures, expressions, surfaces, muscles etc. are present always refer to something hidden, disquieting , sometimes even menacing. The toning of your photos emphasizes this quality. Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems to me that you are not a simple spectator while doing your images, on the contrary I see you very engaged, and I suppose, at the same time trying to exorcise, or neutralize some underlying ghosts. I would like to comment some of them, but I am truly tired now and I am in a hurry. I write this comment as it is, incomplete, because I don't know when I will have the occasion to do it properly and is better a little than nothing. A question: Do you allways carry the Hasselblad with you?

Razvan Tulai , December 02, 2004; 11:55 A.M.

Excelent work!!! i wanted to see more pictures with the hasselblad and i end up looking at all the pictures... great job!

Laurent Z , December 03, 2004; 11:17 A.M.

Gianfranco Evangelista , January 09, 2005; 05:28 A.M.

Wonderful!

Giuseppe Miriello , January 17, 2005; 01:50 P.M.

Hi,

really a great portfolio. Vast, complex even if centered on portraiture, technically it is really close to perfection. I have always loved bw but i am amazed how you are able to manage the pure b/w, no evident or repetitive tones (like mines just as an example) to enhance the images - they are good as they are; razor sharp pictures, with more that one meaning and everyone need to be looked carefully to understand how much tecnique and composition is hidden within.

As someone stated before looking through your portfolio is an intense and fatiguing experience and takes time and willingness to stop by and try to understand

giuseppe

Laurie M , January 17, 2005; 02:55 P.M.

I can't tell you how glad I am that your portfolio was "featured". You have captured much more than an images here! I have given myself the task of shooting more photos of people that go beyond a representation of their likeness. It's new for me and a daunting challenge. Viewing your portfolio has truly inspired me! I'll be checking back regulary to study your compositions and techniques.

Durr Wise , January 17, 2005; 03:28 P.M.

Wonderful

Stefan, I love your entire portfolio. You have been rewarded by being featured, but it only tells a small part of the story. Such emotion! Thank you for sharing this and for the little push that I needed to learn and study more.

Excellent photography, Stefan. Not many smiles, but many, many powerful photographs.

Dirk Vermeirre , January 19, 2005; 05:15 P.M.

So excellent Stefan !

Hi Stefan,

Glad to see you as featured artist here and I'm very happy to see so many of your images at one place. Excellent, warm, human, strong work Stefan !!!! I should say less is more. Most are so simple, so striking and full of expression and behind that expression stays a portion of mysterie that makes the portraits even stronger. Absolutely classy work Stefan, my hat off!

Warm regards,

Dirk

PS: may I add a link to your portfolio in the links page on www.2point8.be ?

Tony Mindling , January 20, 2005; 09:53 P.M.

Stephan, thank you for sharing your beautiful work with us. It is very inspirational. What a huge variety of approaches to photographing people in your individual photos portfolio - there are no tricks, all approaches are different. The character flowing through all is simplicity and light, and straightforward technique. I was sure that a few were the result of some tricky manipulation, but no, closer look showed them all to be real. Comparing the black-and-white images to the few in color, it is clear that black-and-white sees the light. Long live B&W.

John Bald , January 20, 2005; 10:44 P.M.

I stopped here for a while.

Bravo, Stefan. These are the most human portraits I've seen on photo.net and most anywhere. Fine, fine portraits. In all honesty, I looked over these pictures and thought, I hope I can have the courage to shoot pictures like this someday.

Eleni Mohianaki , January 21, 2005; 06:52 P.M.

Colours Alive , January 22, 2005; 02:48 A.M.

Brilliant Portraits

I think your portfolio is great! Every single one clearly shows an understanding of the person behind the face.

Marvin Carlos , January 22, 2005; 09:37 A.M.

Inspiring! Thanks for sharing!

David de Vaal , January 22, 2005; 08:08 P.M.

thank you

for sharing your portfolio. I just spent quite some time looking through your photographs, and I find them all stunning. Great portrets, absolutely wonderful.

Bob Sandford , January 22, 2005; 10:39 P.M.

Now that I have looked at amny of these photographs I think I know what draws me into the. It's simply the humanity that is in them. Somehow in your photos the life of your subjects becomes just transparent to draw me in and just opaque enough to leave me wondering and imagining. I'm left remembering what is intriguing and worthwhile about getting to know people.

Pablo Villar , January 23, 2005; 07:25 P.M.

I loved this folder, its fool of emotions, life and feelings. Very good technics too

Pnina Evental , January 24, 2005; 12:58 P.M.

Neil MacLean , January 25, 2005; 08:48 A.M.

This is an stunning portfolio, just phenomenal work.

Tom Appel , January 25, 2005; 02:07 P.M.

Gift

You have an enviable gift for turning private moments into still lifes. Yours is one of my favorite portfolios on photo.net.

Alberto Procacciante , January 28, 2005; 06:44 P.M.

I need to call again

Definitely too much work to comment with a few words. I have seen here a lot of nice pictures and interesting points of view. I need more time (and a faster connection). Congratulations! If I had to suggest anything to think about, is... your subjects' look. It appears to me that - sometimes - you are not freezing them, but hopying they don't get fed up of posing. This steals some value from your work. Please consider these few words like a first, simpathetic, comment. I like your work and will spend some time on it in the future.

Nick Wilson , January 28, 2005; 08:16 P.M.

Long live the square!

VERY strong photography. Love the use of the square!

Congrats.

David McCracken , January 29, 2005; 04:36 A.M.

One to learn from!

You are certainly someone we can all learn from. I may just have found you but better late than never!

Thanks for being here!

sheila barnett , January 29, 2005; 12:15 P.M.

absolutely wonderful!!!

John Peri , January 30, 2005; 05:13 A.M.

An astonishingly sophisticated body of work, each image is a world unto itself and yet the whole fits together beautifully to express a clear vision by the artist. A little depressing at times, though not always so, but a clear representation of a part of life that we cannot and should not ignore.

Tamara L. , January 30, 2005; 11:06 A.M.

Congratulations

I've always been a big fan of your work. I love the way you see things.

Felipe Rodríguez , January 30, 2005; 06:02 P.M.

FEHMIDA KAPADIA , January 30, 2005; 10:48 P.M.

awesome!

HI! Stefan,

this is one of the best portrait protfolios I've seen. Its interesting that no one seems to be smiling in the pictures, do u scare them or make them really mad before u shoot? :) jest kidding

love it!!

Stefan Rohner , February 02, 2005; 09:16 A.M.

Thank you all!

.. regards Stefan

George Klima , February 02, 2005; 12:17 P.M.

Thank you, Stefan! The people in your images are so entirely human.

Tomas Benko , February 02, 2005; 09:58 P.M.

I do have an appeal...

your portfolio is full of masterworks...I especially like the "imaginary world's (prints on paper)" folder...I would like to ask you to try to write the main story of this group of pics...maybe you could put it to each picture as part of presentation...looks amazing...wow

Chris P. Sampson , February 03, 2005; 12:47 A.M.

Stunning

A great body of work, especially enjoyed 'Vero', 'Inocencia 2', 'Julia', 'Peace of mind 2' & 'Just do it'. Really, a great viewing experience. Won't be my last visit. Cheers

Absolutely one of the best portrait portfolios on photo.net. I'm glad this is the featured portfolio for this month otherwise I might have missed it. Great job. Will be back for sure!

Bas W , February 04, 2005; 05:48 A.M.

Congratulations

Stefan, congratulations on the very deserved honor of being selected as a featured portfolio. I've been admiring your work for a long time. There is a mood that you manage to strike in your portraits that is unmatched by anyone and something totally unique. It doesn't rely on gimicks but manages to achieve excellence by relying on composition, timing and good technique. Your portraits of the girl on the bus and in the window of the coffee shop are master pieces. If I ever get rich I'd get some print to decorate my office. Good luck in your future career.

Javier de Lázaro Redruello , February 04, 2005; 09:37 A.M.

Good work

Looking at those pictures in wich the subject is looking so sinceresly to the camera... how did you manage to get those images like those in Morocco in wich people is supposed not to be proffesional models?

Please please... there must be a secret! Do you aproach to the subject and just say hello may I take a picture?

Georgios Chaziris , February 05, 2005; 03:09 P.M.

Your work is so inspirational!

Stefan Rohner , February 06, 2005; 04:16 P.M.

thank you all, again....

thanks for all these words.....

Javier, once I wrote these words to a similar question:

"you can take street portraits, in bars, in parks, everywhere, but this needs time, it's not possible to walk inside a bar and lift up the camera! :) sometimes it is, but then you have to be quick. and you have to feel the mood at this moment, the mood in the ambient, how people look at you.. ect... if you see an interesting face you should talk to this "face", it is a human body and soul........................... then when you have some relation to this human soul, then one day you can take out the camera .....maybe :)..... bring them honour and respect! it is always very interesting meeting new human souls :) not only to photograph them! new relations, new friends....."

and Javier, in morocco it is still more difficult, it needs time ...time .... and time..... (to me)

even here in my place: Spain, I spend long long time with my models before I photograph them. they have to have a good feeling, they have to feel sure, they have to feel proud... the photographer can do a lot to support these feelings...

best regards Stefan

ben conover , February 09, 2005; 09:44 A.M.

Thank you very much!

Hi, I love the work you have shown us here. I have seen many faces and places, but now when I am here in my isolated Irish farm house, those faces and places, and the ones you have shown us, come back like a flood to a desert. I believe in your philosophy of talking to people before snapping, it makes the photo a fairer exchange. If only others would give back to the world what they take. wow

Hi Stefan, I'm definetely speechless in front of your portfolio. it's really a pleasure to see all these beautiful pictures. many congrats for your art.

Byron Ortiz , March 22, 2005; 03:20 P.M.

Dear Stefan

Magnificient work.

I don't agree with Pablo Picasso with he said "I have discovered photography. Now I can kill myself. I have nothing else to learn" because since I discover photography I have being living in a constant learning process and looking at your work just encourage me to run the extra mile and to learn more.

I like it when you refer to your subjects as human souls, it is exactly what I'm trying to apply in my photography sessions but sometimes people don't get it they just want me to take the picture, and I did not have the corauge to say no, I will not take it.

What is photography for you? Why do you shoot? What advice can you tell to someone who is trying to find his own style. Congratulations and keep shooting.

BTW, I have a D100, and I alwas shoot with a AF MicroNikkor 60mm 2.8, humbly imvite you to see my work, comments appreicated.

This is an awesome portfolio, Stefan. Not one snapshot. Every work of art/photo tells its own story. Its an inspiration to me to try harder, much much harder.

I have read your comments on how you spend time, lots of time with each person and shoot with available light. A true dedication to your craft.

There are a few photos in there that would look good with Wagner's Valkyries as the background music mood.

Wonderfull work!

Philip Turner - San Francisco, CA , December 09, 2005; 02:26 A.M.

Amazing Work!

You seem to have found the softer underbelly of the world. You have a warm, softer approach to what could be a very hard-edged interpretation of your subjects. Instead, they seem to be that much more intriguing and rounded (they haven't been exploited by your camera) and they seem to be comfortable being themselves with you which is the mark of a truly instinctive portraitist. I feel like you might be a Mary Ellen Mark in the making or even possibly a Diane Arbus visionary? I feel like the best is yet to come.

B Aldrich , December 09, 2005; 09:46 A.M.

Best Wishes

I am sad to see you go from here. Although I am more active towards your work with browsing ball-saal and your personal website. What I am sad about is that there is more interaction between you through this site, and you're leaving it. I will miss being able to read your comments on technique, on life. I am not a great photographer but there is always the dream, and the dream of being in the presence of one, of having any kind of contact (be it small, or big)with an artist of your high caliber. But I understand your reasons for leaving, and respect them. Best wishes to you in life.

Cheers, Leilani

How are you Stefan, I pray well and that everything is going well for you and your kin. It saddend me greatly with that bad buisness and its a real crime that some of the greatest shots to dwell and tell their stories here have been pulled down over pussy politics. You know why I like your work its b'cos you communicate with the common man on an equal level and this is why you are able to see eye to eye, this and because you care enough to go that extra mile to tell it right for those your speaking for. There is a lot of hate in this world that sometimes its hard to see the good but I have always known where your heart is, you are a good man & great artist.

Stefan Rohner , March 13, 2007; 01:44 P.M.

Hugh, I don?t care anymore, you see, I am uploading again, I am well and happy...

and to the politics on this site:

it is not possible to EDIT others people minds, even if the administration thinks that it is possible, it is NOT!

best regards Stefan

Samo Rovan , March 16, 2007; 10:46 P.M.

Hallo Stefan,

I saw, you took a look on my portfolio - Granny folder. Well, there is only one little part of the exhibition "Granny", which I had in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I saw, that there on Anarchy Images, you have a colleague from Slovenia - Manca Juvan.

I took a look on your photos again and there really in an good old faction style going thru all of them, some are also a little "Arbus" touch,...

Well, I'm looking forward for your new photos.

Best regards, Samo Rovan

Sensitinve, gritty, haunting....amazing work

Emmanuel Enyinwa , March 27, 2007; 11:55 P.M.

Ha, I was really amused by your comments regarding the politics of pnet. Of course, I agree that too often mediocre pictures are rated 6/6 because the rater expects something in return. But, do you stop living because of that? Of course, not. The true artist stays true to himself and does not follow the latest fad. Your work, I'm sure you know, is a manifestation of your own personal vision. It is not unique to you, but your combination of this vision with a consciencious craftsmanship elevates your work above the pale. So, rating or no rating, a horse is a horse, and a mule a mule.

Dear Rohner, I am shotting photos for 10 years. Approximately 5 years ago a friend of mine linked to your photos on your site and i was really impressed. From that time my point of view on photography totally changed. For 5 years when they ask me "Who is your favorite photographer?" I always give the name Stefan Rohner. I was very surprised when I saw you in this site. I can't choose the right words to describe my feelings but thanks for everything you have done for my photos and my photographic POV.
