Sam Bal , October 18, 2004; 01:27 A.M.

Excellent

wow, excellent portfolio, very pleasing to look through, everytime I found my favourite another popped up! congrats....

Alton Earle , November 30, 2004; 03:57 A.M.

Good portfolio, however, I'll get to the REAL reason for this comment. I absolutely LOVE your portrait on your member page! I burst out laughing and had to traslate the sign into Chinese for our office staff...now we have a room full of chuckling people :-D.

I'll comment later on the portfolio when I have more time (I don't do critter pictures, but like them. Most of the critters I run across in Taiwan bite and/or are poisonous :-) ).

Sam Bal , November 30, 2004; 12:46 P.M.

Laughing

Alton, that's remote control: to let a room full of people, at the other side of the world, laugh! One cannot laugh enough. Critters: as you can see, I've specialized in normally non-stinging/biting/sucking critters ;-) Thanks very much for your story.

Sam Bal , November 30, 2004; 12:47 P.M.

Nikki, I pleased to read your comments. Thanks very much!

Arnab Banerjee , December 03, 2004; 01:25 P.M.

Sam, Your portfolio reminds me why I come back to this site often and why I should keep doing so in future. Good to see diverse photographic talents and opportunity to learn from everyone. Keep shooting man..

Sam Bal , December 04, 2004; 04:10 A.M.

Arnab, thanks very much for appreciating my photos. Yes, I'll keep on shooting!

Gareth Davies , December 08, 2004; 03:51 P.M.

Its people like you ...

That make me subscribe to PN! You have a very varied portfolio, yet manage to be proficient in many different categories. You have a good eye and plenty of natural talent. There are plenty of shots to provide inspiration to beginners like myself.

Thank you for this window to your world

Sam Bal , December 09, 2004; 06:21 A.M.

Gareth, thank you very much for your kind words. I'm highly pleased you are appreciating my efforts to photographically document what I see around me, wherever I am. From the sort of twilight zone, at 52 degrees North, where I usually live these years, to the well-lighted equatorial zone & beyond. Cheers! Sam.

Charlotte Aberg , December 13, 2004; 01:30 P.M.

Sam Bal , April 20, 2005; 02:43 A.M.

Alan and Hector, receiving verbal compliments is more rewarding than those rather abstract & often moody ratings one so often receives without any explanantions. Thanks very much for expression your appreciation. Cheers, Sam.

Also thanks for the comment.

Sam Bal , July 28, 2005; 01:05 A.M.

Timothy

Thanks for your appreciation of my photos. I think the following lyrics, part of the French chanson 'Le Voyage' by Charles Aznavour, is also covering my life as a photographer: "Je voyage, je voyage, vers les lieux benis de ma vie - de voyage en voyage, a travers erreurs et acquis - sans bagage, par images, par le reve et par la pensee - de voyage en voyage, sur les vagues de mon passe." Cheers, Sam.

Sriram Varadarajan , July 30, 2005; 05:37 P.M.

Travel

Hi Sam,

I am suprised to read you are from Amsterday - I somehow had the impression you are from Australia ...

You travelled indeed very much. Have you tried to write travel stories for the respective section of photo.net?

cheers Maria

Sam Bal , August 25, 2005; 07:48 A.M.

Hi Maria, wasn't that a real surprise?! I'm writing a lot - but only for folks I know. As such, I know what they're interested in & how they could possibly react. Often, my kind of wry/black humor cannot be endured by everyone. Thanks for your comment & query. Cheers, Sam.

Manu Poelmans , September 03, 2005; 12:36 P.M.

Superb portfolio, just a wonderfull trip around the world. Great work.

James Meyer , September 04, 2005; 08:34 A.M.

Great work!

Hi Sam, I enjoyed digging through your many photos here, you have wonderful talent. I also wanted to tell you thanks for having that Oscar Wilde quote in your bio. As I look through the portfolios of everyone on this site, I find myself wondering what on Earth people want to look at, and why they're drawn to it. Reading this quote and wandering through your work has reminded me to do whatever the hell I want for my own reasons and artistic license, and everyone else with their nay-saying opinions can go take a running jump. Thank you again. James

Sam Bal , September 04, 2005; 09:20 A.M.

James, I'm pleased in having been instrumental to you in finally seeing the light! Thanks very much for your kind comments & great appreciation, also on the photo taken in springtime Grindelwald. Cheers, Sam.

Neil Murray , March 31, 2006; 01:32 A.M.

Sam, what an astounding portfolio; both for its breadth of subject matter and for its for its quality of photographs. I can't believe how many birds, animals, landscapes, coastlines and other facets of Australia you have recorded so well. Good on you. It's a credit to you.

I have just begun to photograph and record the wildlife in my little neck of the woods, Phillip Island. But I have a long way to go. Your portfolio has inspired me to get a move on.

Best wishes and keep up the good work. Regards, Neil

Sam Bal , March 31, 2006; 02:28 A.M.

Hi Neil, it's very pleasing to read that I've inspired you. Australia has tons of photogenic landscapes, animals & other features, bathing in that fantastic light we don't have in old Europe. Your Aussie sports photos are really good & also very colourful. Keep on shooting mate! Cheers, Sam.

Lovely portfolio ! You have so many very good images. I will have to come back since there are to many to appreciate in one sitting. One that caught my eye from the beginning is in your flower folder in which you have a huge number of sunflowers, very nice. I will be coming back. Regards, Nicole

Sam Bal , April 09, 2006; 06:09 P.M.

Daria, it's very nice to read your comment & be made aware of your enthusiasm for my photos. Thanks very much! Cheers, Sam.

Sam Bal , April 09, 2006; 06:11 P.M.

Nicole, the nice thing about sunflowers is: they all look into the same direction & let themselves be photographed in an orderly fashion ;-) Thanks you very much for your kind comments on my portfolio. Cheers, Sam.

Terri L. , April 25, 2006; 02:21 A.M.

I'm so glad I stopped by here. The coastlines and landscapes are wonderful, and I loved the Not for the Faint of Heart folder! Must have taken quite awhile to accumulate all these - so much variety of locations and subjects

Terri, thanks for your comments & appreciation. I'm trying to keep my eyes open all the time & it's so amazing what is out there to be seen & recorded. Cheers, Sam.

Maurizio, thanks very much for your kind comments. I still do have a lot of Italy photos & might upload them at a later date. Thanks again & cheers! Sam.

Emily Alkema , September 26, 2006; 03:59 P.M.

Holland

Well my country is very present in this great portfolio Sam. What a job to fill this album with many different pictures from everywere.. Thanks, Emily

Sam Bal , September 27, 2006; 11:55 P.M.

Emily, some of the earlier photos (Africa) date back from the late '60s. Then there's a big gap till the end of the '80s / early '90s, when first scanning & then digital photography made photographing life much easier. In the meantime, I really got fed up with colour prints as many laboratories turned out all sorts of colours, but not the ones I thought I captured. As I'm originally an Amsterdammer, there's a lot of that yet rather difficult to photograph city (narrow streets) in my portfolio. As I've travelled a lot for work, & now still travel for pleasure, there are photos from many parts of the world. Thanks very much for your comments & appreciation. Cheers, Sam.

Emily Alkema , October 07, 2006; 06:35 P.M.

Hallo Sam uit Amsterdam,

Thanks for the story about your roots in the Low Lands. Zeker verwachtte ik een reden voor je grote belangstelling en waardering van ons kleine landje. Je merkt dat ik verwacht dat je nog nederlands spreekt. Maybe I'm wrong. Have a good time in Holland next visit and in the mean time we make some pictures for you.Een rood-wit-blauwe groet, Emily

Sam Bal , October 09, 2006; 01:57 A.M.

Hi Emily, no you're not wrong, I still speak Hooghaarlemmerdijks. Thanks very much for your comments. Cheers, Sam.

An Deceuninck , November 22, 2006; 07:11 P.M.

(my hometown-allez, Knokke-Belgi멠Enfin, je ziet dat de foto's gemaakt zijn met hart en ziel, bedankt om ons te laten meegenieten, An

Sam Bal , November 23, 2006; 11:05 P.M.

An, thanks very much for your nice comments. I've written some words on your portfolio site. Cheers, Sam.

Pascal Agneray , December 02, 2006; 11:47 P.M.

You have one heck of a portfolio. It took me a good 10 minutes to go through it and I was going fast. I like the pictures of Fidji showing the mud patterns, the inside of that church with the organs and a sunset in New Zealand. I think you should have a folder called "my best shots" (or something catchier) where you put the quintessence of all you have. But just like you have to show all the pictures of yourself on your portrait, I have a feeling it's going to be very hard for you to do the picking. I'd try it if I were you...you have tons of great material...just a bit too much for impatient people.

Sam Bal , December 06, 2006; 10:20 P.M.

Pascal, thanks very much for your input & appreciation, comments & suggestions. Which are my best shots? I wouldn't be able to show you. The photos on the site showing my Most Rated Photos is definitely not representing the selection I could have made - if I'd wanted to. Basically, it's a random selection by PN members who've happened to be on-line when those photos were presented & who have liked to convey the result of their tastes &/or ideas, finally resulting in enough ratings for the photo to be incorporated under the heading Most Rated. So what, I would say. Perhaps some of my photos should be seen together in the folder where they are presented - the ensemble giving a better idea of my way of seeing the world around me than each individual photo. BTW I've great patience wirh impatient people ;-) It's their problem, not mine really. Thanks again & cheers! Sam.

BONNET François , December 21, 2006; 04:55 P.M.

Magnifique !!!

A great moment in your portfolio, i travel with your pictures. Very interesting to see different thing in different country. I even see Moeraki Boulders in France south Alpes and call "Pierre qui roule". Thanks for sharing...

Bonnet, thanks for your nice comments. It's a pleasure to know you'd like to do some armchair travelling with my portfolio photos in view. Cheers, Sam.

Pascal Agneray , January 30, 2007; 09:06 P.M.

I just read your Oscar Wilde take again (about the integrity of being an artist. About being a selfish appreciator and doer, not a pleaser) and then I read the French verses and something happened to me. You must know that I am not gay or weirded out, I have my emotional needs fully satisfied. I say that because reading what you say, seeing what you take, being in your little universe makes me feel love towards you. I do not know you by any mean but I thought I would have the boldness to admit to you that you have touched my heart in the most wonderful way. It's not embarrassing, I hope. I just love the world you have created and I am intimately convinced that you are a great and rich individual and i wanted to let you know that. That's all. Being French and living in a world where the idea that French hate Americans is promoted by the highest power and half the medias, It is powerfully refreshing and optimistic to hear someone totally going against it, truly, it is ! Thank you (for you) Sam. Pascal Agneray

Sam Bal , February 01, 2007; 05:32 P.M.

Pascal, we all have our very special ways of getting emotionally touched by images. IMO, your reaction is in accordance with recognized or accepted standards. Basically, all responses are positive, even negatively criticizing ones - no reaction at all is sheer misery & may cause loneliness. So, after reading your comments, I'm very glad to realize I'm not alone out there in seeing & photographing some aspects of the world as I do. I've gone through your portfolio & found quite a lot of images which stimulated my imagination. Thanks very much for your elaborate commentary. Cheers, Sam. P.S.: the irony of fate is that I'm a travelling Dutchman - not an American, as you seem to think. However, that is not really an important matter. Rivalries are an integral part of life ;-)

Sam Bal , March 01, 2007; 07:23 P.M.

Dennis, the change of seeing my portfolio is something in the order of 1 in 100 000 as there are about 100 000 pn members ;-) Thanks very much for your kind words n& appreciation. Cheers, sam.

Shweta Banerjee , March 18, 2007; 03:25 P.M.

Hi Sam

Thanks for sharing your work. Your's is one of the very lively portfolios that I've seen. Practically saw life as I see around in open world. Guess you've covered all aspects of life in this small page. I didn't even notice the amount of time I spent watching you pictures. Brilliant and very inspirational.

Sam Bal , March 20, 2007; 05:38 P.M.

Shweta, thanks so much for your very kind comments. It's a great pleasure to receive your feedback. Yes, it takes some time to view my portfolio. It also took a it of time to shoot the photos ;-) Cheers, Sam.

Brendan Hanley , March 21, 2007; 07:42 P.M.

Holy hell!

What a portfolio. I'm going to need a couple of months off to take it all in! Excellent photography and soooooo diverse! Keep shooting ... I'll be back!

Sam Bal , March 23, 2007; 04:16 A.M.

Brendan, no worries, take your time & enjoy. That's fair dinkum & also what I do when shooting leisurely everything that either moves, or sits still enough to be captured unblurred;-) Thanks very much for your interest & enthusiasm. Cheers, Sam.

Ross Yourth , March 23, 2007; 10:51 P.M.

Hi Sam

Thanks for your comment on my Archer picture.WOW !!! What an impressive portfolio, will be visiting this site many times. What I gather from my initial visit is that you are a master of the tight crop. Also copied Oscar Wild's short essay on being an artist, very illuminating.I do believe that you can study other people's work without actually copying , for example, one of the most important techniques I have learned is the importance of cropping all non essential elememts from an image. This I learned from critiques from fellow photographers & studying other photographers work.Regards-Ross

Sam Bal , March 25, 2007; 05:55 A.M.

Ross, thanks very much for your comments. Yes, it's important, but sometimes difficult, to decide what to leave out & what to keep in an image. As the photographer often is impressed by one aspect or item, others may see differnt things or put the emphasis on another aspect than he would do. Anyway, it's fun, also while you learn to see the world around you a bit better. Cheers, Sam.

Ted Gorczyca , March 26, 2007; 05:49 P.M.

great portfolio, Sam. Boy you have a lot of photos to pick from and I must say I like your landscapes. Thanks for your comment on my photo

Sam Bal , March 27, 2007; 08:11 A.M.

Ted, long periods of my life were spent in 'landscapes'. Perhaps that's why I got a bit of an eye for some of them. Thanks very much for your comments & appreciation. Cheers, Sam.

Richard Gale , April 06, 2007; 05:22 A.M.

Sam, thanks for your comments, Ill have pop back when I have more time to have good look through your folio. Rich.

Dennis Aubrey , May 24, 2007; 10:59 A.M.

Just found your portfolio, Sam ...

... and have spent the last while playing "Where's this" in your France folder. Great stuff here, I'll be back to play again.

Sam Bal , June 04, 2007; 12:55 A.M.

Dennis, I'm glad to be made aware that when I forget or am too lazy to indicate where a photo is taken, that this inaction creates a kind of agreeable puzzle to someone out there;-) Thanks very much for your critiques & comments on some of the photos I've taken in la douce France. Cheers, Sam.

Hello Friend!

Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.

I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.

Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting

Ken

Birte Ragland , January 28, 2008; 05:48 A.M.

You certainly get around Sam, looks by your photos you are jetsetting from one country to another with your camera. You have a fantastic gallery here with many wonderful images, been awhile since I have looked, you have added some very nice shots to it,and where to next?

Sam Bal , January 29, 2008; 11:34 A.M.

hi birte, thanks very much for your kind compliments, which I appreciate a lot, knowing your portfolio of magnificent images! During my working man's life I jet-setted in & out of more than a dozen countries & only took work-related photos of no general interest at all. I've thrown them all away shortly after I started seeing the world, my world, as my eyes & mind apparently were not any longer cluttered by rather irrelevant, work-related ideas. Since then - & the invention of digital photography-cum-computers - I haven't stopped shooting, now travelling much more slowly than before. Yeah, there's still litterally a white spot on my map: Antarctica, where I hope to be able to go in the near future. We'll see, life if full of surprises. Cheers, Sam.

Krijg nou wat, een Amsterdammer! En nog een wereldreiziger ook...

Hi Sam,

Wanted to let you know I sneaked in here this early sunday morning to thank you for your good advise on my beach photo. It's 2 beschuitjes and 3 cups of tea later now and I still haven't seen everything in your portfolio. So far the Australian architecture, Hong Kong and the paperwasps are my fav. I am a lizzard fan, but after one quick glance I skipped the spiders .. brrrr. Thanks for the inspiration, I'll be back for lots and lots more. Meanwhile take care and have fun! Hartelijke groet, Geertje

Sam Bal , July 07, 2008; 03:22 A.M.

Hoi Geertje, you're not alone in getting the shivers when seeing the photos my spider friends, although most of them are not (very) venomous;-) Hope you'll continue enjoying the results of my efforts to shoot everything that happens to come in front of my lens. Cheers, Sam.

Ananda Kumar , March 24, 2010; 10:50 A.M.

Sam Bal

I made a comment on your "Cruise ships". It was while looking at critique form and later when I red your reply I thought I should check your portfolio and came here. Well After spending nearly 45 mins here, I should say I had a world tour in just 45 mins. You have a very diverse collection of very nice composition and very good exposures. I regret about my comment now, it was pure technical which is beyond the story of what you intend to tell. BTW how come you missed India, thats one of the best country you should visit for shooting (being my country). Regards Anand

Gary Pardoe , June 14, 2010; 12:26 P.M.

you have a wonderful collection of photos. I specially like your street photography.

Robert Jeffries , August 05, 2011; 03:59 P.M.

your tree photos

Sam I would like to make a slide show of your tree photo collection for personal use on my computer as background.  Can you accommodate this request at I higher resolution than you exhibit on photo.net.  I have downloaded quite a few of your photo.net exhibited tree photos but the are not clear enough to enjoy.  Please quote me a cost for a high resolution portfolio of just your trees. I am a big fan of the eye you have for trees.

Thank you for your consideration.
