Your talent is obvious & best stated by the image labelled "supplication". It should have been called "out of the frame"!!

As a former colleague of Ed's - scrabbling for stories as reporters on a local paper for years - it's fantastic to see that he's found his true vocation. Very impressive stuff.

Ed..... apart from a great collection of images 'stop and search' really deserves a presentation format. Please consider doing one. Awesome work!

Extraordinary!
Looking through your portfolio is a real feast for the eyes. It's a little disheartening in the sense that it makes my own efforts seem rather lacking (the bog roll concept picture seems strangely appropriate all of a sudden) but on the other hand it makes me want to press myself that little bit harder to make some really great pictures of my own. Did I mention how good your pictures are already? Thanks for making trawling through photo.net so rewarding.
Charlotte Aberg , November 28, 2004; 05:57 P.M.
I LOVE 'urban landscapes', 'ordinary lives', 'simplicity', 'in transit' and 'solitude' absolutely brilliant, all 7/7, not too keen on the computer manipulated images though( 'states of mind' and 'in the city') but that's just me so don't take it the wrong way - well done, i'll be checking back regularily!

Cosmic trip
I like the work that beams, that cosmic trip between abstract and the urban side, the handling of the color in the takings is perfect congratulations
Chad Gard , February 11, 2005; 02:14 P.M.
Thanks for the comment on my portfolio, Ed. I probably should post more storm chasing photos (most are taken in my pre-digital days, though, and scanning slides is so depressing...)
I really enjoy your City at Night series - lots of motion and great color saturation and composition! Really motivates me to want to try more urban night photography.
I have to agree with several other people - Stop and Search is a great concept. A presentation format would be great. Or maybe just larger uploads so we can see more clearly what everyone is carrying (speaking of which, I found "The Journalist" intriguing and unexpected). But what a fun and engaging idea!
Fun work!

Your feedback and comments fuel my determination to try to create something new and beautiful every day. I have recently re-ordered my folders, so some of the images you liked may have moved. I hope you will keep looking out for them and keep talking to me about what you like and don't. Best wishes.

What a day!
It took me quite a moment to go through all your folders but I don't regret it at all! On the contrary, as I was browsing, I felt like saving this one, that one, and that one too, realysing all of a suddend how many I wanted to keep in my photo library.
In every folder I found more than one very good photos. Good means well composed, well seen, creative, out of the usual.
But in all of them I was able to detect a huge pleasure of seeing! And that one alone passes to the viewer! Thans a lot for sharing!

Ed - you are truly an 'artiste' - Wow! Not only do you have wonderful compositions, as a photographer, but also your manipulations have your own style that I cannot quite define - they are 'way coooool!' I am especially taken by your Dark Hyperreality folder - it's got that feel of those Fish-era Marillion album covers from the early and mid 80's - Would love to learn your technique! All the best, Serge

I left a comment on "Flats" which amidst all these wonderful photographs might simply still be my favorite! But not without mentioning some very special others: Poppies, and the magnificent PS work on Steps and Magic Road, and the Boat Awaiting Sunset within the Gran Canaria, and last but not least, a brilliant Red Cherry, and overall, your penchant for many things red! Thanks much for all the wonderful images.

I mean this as a compliment. You are really 'out there' in terms of your creativity!! Appealing to people who are not much into that genre is really something! That's what I think your photos do (at least to me). You make mundane things and events seem... well interesting... I was going for something better than interesting... I am not getting a word for it, so let's go with interesting until then.

Wow, good stuff, starting with your biography which gave me a good laugh, I hope intentionally. Actually I was diected to this site by Milo G. who thought I might find it interesting and a pick-me-up after some of my photos got absolutely creamed. Nothing like a little dose of creative imagination to send your kite sailing again. You've got a load of great stuff, too much for one sitting, so I'll mark you as one of those "interesting people" (and part-time enemy of the state) and peruse at my leisure. Regards, Jack

Great portfolio
Your talent speaks volumes - great ideas showing here. Really liked the suicidal toys and stop and search series.
Bit presumptuous given my c**p portfolio, but: Either become better acquainted with PS or leave it alone. Same with lighting (technically) as it needs to be more developed - some shots are simply too 'flat'.
But that's just technique, anyone can learn that. You got the eye and the ideas - rare indeed. Very much looking forward to see more of your work!

Spring Cleaning
It had to be done! There were nearly a thousand photos in my portfolio and I decided I had to clear out many of them. The ones I've kept are not necessarily my favourites, but the ones that seemed most popular - so I've put them in a double album called Greatest Hits (a-d). I will be making changes to my home website shortly and hopefully you will find some more structured folders of my conceptual work there in the coming weeks. Thanks for all your comments and critiques - I have not deleted the memory of them along with the pictures! I hope some of the remaining images are strong enough to stand alone, outside the series that featured them. Best wishes, as always.
Peter Mead
, January 23, 2006; 06:32 P.M.
Well, ok. I'm not sure that going by popular tastes is the best route, especially as it is hard to qualify the audience. You have some pictures that rise above popular tastes and, even if "traditional" in format, represent breakthrough vision. For example, the shadow of the pigeon flying, the three boys jumping off a cliff, Serena, the woman with the red skirt facing the grey sea and several others that set you apart from a talented field. Many of the images you retained on this site show talent, versitility and personality, but "fit right in" with other photographer's work. I have the admittedly biased view that the true fine artist sets fire to the exisiting form by discovering new or more relevant values underlying it and a way of expression that breaks clean with the past. You somehow manage to pull it off as a refinement of what's gone before, not a revolution.
Ed Swinden
, January 24, 2006; 06:01 A.M.
Hi Peter, I agree with you, and I am actually replacing some of the series in miniature on the site, for reference. But I had to make cuts, and was considering the 'core audience' of Photo.net... the public gets what the public wants, as I believe someone once said! The more 'arty' or 'slow-burning' stuff probably belongs on my home website, which I'm in the process of rebuilding. My hope is that by 'going commercial' more people will find my work, and maybe ask to see full series again... the other images still exist, they are just resting! I hope my work is artistic, but I never set out to redefine photography as a genre. I just show the world as I see - and feel - it. Sometimes the result is barely photography at all, and so maybe doesn't belong here. But it is very kind of you to say that I manage to pull it off! I really appreciate the appreciation - if you get what I mean! Thanks again, and best wishes.
Alexandre Guerra , January 27, 2006; 03:25 P.M.
Really impressive portfolio, strong, real, alive. A feast for the eyes and an invigorating source of inspiration. I feel bad not to have seen the other images you've deleted. Hoping you to post more shots! Best regards, Alex

Congrats on a truly excellent portfolio - very inspirational! Really enjoyed your presentation at Red Eye 2 weeks ago so wanted to check out the rest of your work! Having spent the day wandering around manchester yesterday appreciate how difficult it is to get quality images. Only just subscribed to photo.net today so may pluck up courage to submit some of my efforts in near future. Look forward to seeing more of your work.
Regards. Richard

Hello Ed, it's a shame your suicidal toys didn't get into the greatest hits, but you have revitalised your portfolio quite a bit with the recent cull.
I'm looking forward to more new material.

Ed. Add me to the long list of admirers. Of all the portfolios I have viewed up to this point in life, yours will forever stand out in memory. The few minutes I have spent perusing your images have been without question some of the most inspiring... It is without needing to say that I love what you do and wish you all the best.

Ed I commented on your work back in February and since that time I have seen you continue to push the creative boundaries like few others on PN. Your skills and passion embody the essence of what photography inspiration is all about. There appears to be no limit to your range and your seemingly effortless ability to embrace and perfect so many different styles.
You are an invaluable catalyst for creativity. Thanks for the show and the ongoing lessons.

Clearout Time Again!
Yes, there were too many photos in the portfolio again, so I've emptied it out. Once again I've got rid of most of my favourites, which seemed to go over many people's heads ;-) I've left the popular 'commercial' ones.

Hi Ed,
this is a pity because it seems that I've rated none of your "popular" ones - I've lost ALL my favourite pics of yours. So I hope, that I can see soon new 'favourites'. Warm regards, Monika

Thanks Monika. Don't worry, I'll be reinstating quite a few of the other pictures again soon...in a more organised way. And I certainly won't stop taking - and posting - the kind of more subtle pix that I hope you and others enjoy! Best wishes.

Ed, I have the impression that there are still a number of at least my favorites which have not come back.
Anyhow what you show, shows to all that you are in the master class. Not only are your photos in technical terms very near perfection but you have an eye and a mastery of composition that go far beyond the many ordinary professional. You have something to say and succeed in saying it by photography. I can only hope that your example (no over saturation, no unnessary animation, right distance to the object, your use of sharpening/blur, humour...) can be an inspiration for everyone that visit your portfolio.

Hello Friend!
Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.
I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.
Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting
Ken

Great Stuff
I really enjoy your portfolio. I was pulled in by the 'Street B' series. It has an impressive sense of isolation and loneliness; I'm not sure if this was the intent, but it's definitely something I got from it. Also, it has a fantastic use of shadows and the integration with the architecture is really well done. Keep it up!

All pictures in this collection in my view are excellent. It would be hard to edit them down to a smaller group. This graphic (but not editorial) approach is probably worth exploring with galleries. Not a good time economically, but they are (fashions apart) timeless.
Good work, well done Ed

If you are interested in seeing more of my work...
Thanks to all of you who have posted such positive comments above - I really appreciate your input and kind words. Many of the images that you have critiqued in the past are now collected in a selection of self-published Blurb books, and I'd be delighted if you'd have a look at these. I'm particularly proud of one called Inside the Hive which you can preview by following the link.
Best wishes.
