About Photograph of the Week
by Patrick Hudepohl and Mary Ball; revised November 2007
Members of photo.net have captured and uploaded some of the most striking photographs on the Net.
Each week, the Photograph of the Week showcases one of the photographs that we believe merits a
week-long discussion.
The Photograph of the Week (POW) is chosen by a group of photo.net members called the Elves,
based on their personal views, tastes and standards. You should not expect that you will always agree with the choice or the reasons given. What you can expect is an educational and lively discussion. It would be a pretty boring place if everyone agreed with the POW choice!
The term Photograph of the Week simply means that the photo will be shown on the photo.net home page during one week, not that the photo was posted during the past week -- all available photos are eligible to be selected.
How to Participate
There is nothing special that you need to do in order to participate. All you have to do is upload your picture(s) as you always have, either as a single photo or as part of a portfolio Folder.
Guidelines on posting comments
Criticism should be constructive, not destructive. Remember:
all opinions are valid. They represent the differing tastes
of this membership. As such, we encourage members to respect each other
and the chosen POW recipient with the following guidelines:
- Comments should be constructive
Comments should be constructive, suggesting improvements or pointing to exactly what makes the
image work or not work for you. Comments about the "choice" of the image with regard to
whether you agree or disagree with the elves' choice or discussions about photography vs graphic
art or any other far off departure from the subject of the POW as an image for discussion will be
deleted.
- No member bashing, POW recipient bashing or Elf bashing.
Discussions and lively debates are healthy and encouraged. But,
remember that there is no one voice in the photo.net membership that has
"the" answer. Personal attacks or comments are not constructive or
helpful and generally elicit a response in-kind, which degrades the discussion.
Such comments will be deleted. Try to remember that there are
students here as well as talented professionals. Just because you are
more "educated" does not mean you can't learn from someone who is new
to the field.
- No short congratulatory comments and no short disparaging comments.
"Good work." "Nice photo." "Congratulations on POW." Comments such as
these are nice for the photographer to hear but we recommend sending an
e-mail to the recipient. Negative short comments with no details will
also be deleted. For example: "This photo stinks."
"I don't think this is deserving of POW." "I find this photo boring."
- Try not to write a novel with your comments and responses.
Very often there are wordy and frequent comments by the same people
which basically say the same thing in various ways that belabor a point
and are overly verbose. Try to keep your comments concise. These posts
may be edited and/or an e-mail will be sent to request that further
comments be more concise and to the point.
Try not to get caught up in "winning" the debate. We are here to share
and learn from each other!
"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people
always do that,
but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great."
-- Mark Twain
