Love It!
Love it! Love the colour and the composition. :)
J Yee , October 02, 2000; 01:41 A.M.
so...
What did you do to trick that person into climbing to that other point :):):)? Just kidding, nice blues!
Gordon Rogers , October 02, 2000; 02:48 A.M.
Very nice. I really like the blues as well. Striking composition.
Fredrik Renander , October 02, 2000; 05:09 A.M.
Great!
Man and nature. Man in nature. Man is nature.
This is a wonderful photo. Nice colours and composition. But what is the person holding in his hand?
Bob . , October 02, 2000; 09:02 A.M.
Too much black...?
I'm not sure about the amount of black on the right hand side... Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great shot with lovely colours, but I'm wondering if cropping the right hand side would add more to the photo...
Bob.

Great Shot
Just shows to prove that the simpler the better....a simple picture with maximum impact...reminds me of Hiroji Kubota from Magnum :-)
Joshua Kistler , October 02, 2000; 09:19 A.M.
Nice!
This picture I feel is wonderfully composed! The person really puts the location into perspective, and the framing of the canyon walls I feel is dead on! I feel that cropping out the dark black of the framed walls would ruin the composition. I find it neccessary to keep them dark in order to keep the texture from cluttering the image! Perhaps a 1/2 stop higher exposure would lighten it enough to show just a little texture, but not so much to where it clutters the image! Again, this is an outstanding image certainly worthy of being enlarged, framed, and hung on anyones wall!

Beauty!!
I like the photo for many of the same reasons as listed above, but I'd advise anyone to check out:
Stovepipe Wells Sand Dunes, Death Valley
I like this one even better.

Nicey-nice!
for me the picture signifies peace and serenity
Derek Johnson , October 02, 2000; 10:05 A.M.
Nice shot!
I think it looks really good, the blues are great. The one person commenting on the amount of black on the right side could be right but hind site is 20/20 right?
jack colmenero , October 02, 2000; 10:44 A.M.
A memorable shot
Beautiful, my friend. Without the human figure it's still a great moment that you've captured; with the figure, however, you've got a story. Congratulations. I look forward to more of your work.
Rip Stell , October 02, 2000; 10:56 A.M.
Good Job!
I've hiked over a thousand miles in the Grand Canyon and I am always amazed at the different lighting and moods the canyon has to offer. At best the mood can be difficult to capture on film but I think you've done a wonderful job of doing just that. A very nice (different) treatment of a very over photographed subject. Bravo!
Evan Zamir , October 02, 2000; 12:06 P.M.
Yeahh!
This is what POW is all about! I love the use of negative space. In fact, I once started a thread on photo.net about negative space asking if anyone had good examples, and this pic would've been perfect. Nice shot.
Jonathan Watmough , October 02, 2000; 04:08 P.M.

Excellent, but you should have told the person to drop the grey card.

A truly great POW. Awesome.
Edward Kang , October 02, 2000; 04:24 P.M.
excellent
I love the entire folder of images. I just love looking at 'em.
btw, that's not a grey card, that's a gallon jug of water.
Jim Corkrum , October 02, 2000; 06:33 P.M.
Nice Photo
I like this photo a great deal, mainly because it shows the Grand Canyon in blue rather than the orange and red tones we are all used to. Its a nice change.
Narayan Natarajan , October 02, 2000; 08:23 P.M.
cool blues
I like it!
But what's that dude on the side holding? a gallon of water? got me curious.. :-)
Mickey Trageser , October 02, 2000; 08:31 P.M.
Very striking!
Many times I look a photo and think about the composition, exposure, color balance, etc. This time, I was blown away by the image. Never had a chance to analyze. To me, that's a job well done. Thank You!

I just know.
Thank you for a wonderful shot. Though I may fail to grasp the subtleties that others might notice I know a great shot when I see one. This is a great shot.
I also agree with another that your dune shot is stunning.

Simply great
every photographer has his strengths and his shortcomings. One of my shortcomings has been landscape/outdoor pictures. I do a lot of hiking and always have; I love the outdoors. This is precisely the sort of picture I'd like to take and yet never seem to get quite right. I am very, very impressed and admiring.
Ara Kotchian , October 03, 2000; 11:28 A.M.
Incredible
Now we're talking POW :-) This picture just seems to go on for ever. I like the framing and the blues from the airial perspective. Very nice.
ItIs I , October 03, 2000; 01:08 P.M.
Beautiful
Very pleasing. If I have to pick on something, then its that there seems to be a little too much black on the right side. The current black area reduced by 1/3rd would be probably be ideal.

Proficiat Tom
Verdiend 'picture of the week'. De kenners zijn het erover eens en ik sluit mij daar graag bij aan. Prachtig beeld, perfecte compositie. En Wouter zet alles in de juiste verhoudingen.
Bill Carrick , October 04, 2000; 05:12 P.M.
Very nice. Nice to see the Grand Canyon in blues. Person in the foreground definitely adds to the photo.
Stan Walsh , October 04, 2000; 09:38 P.M.
Unique view of GC
These are colors we don't usually see in Grand Canyon photos and they capture a wonderful mood. I really like the foreground silhouette of the canyon walls, using shape rather than color to depict the canyon. I have done three backpack trips to the canyon and this photo immediately took me there. Wonderful!
Carol McNama , October 05, 2000; 02:23 A.M.
Absolutely Breathtaking
After seeing a picture like this I now want to see the Grand Canyon personally.
Wayne DeBack , October 05, 2000; 06:35 A.M.
Reminds me of Queen
You ever see the cover for Queen's last album "Made in Heaven". Well this picture has the same colors and look to it as that... All in all a very good picture
Lloyd Booth , October 05, 2000; 01:02 P.M.
Prior Planning
I am impressed with the bottle's placement. It forces a view to the front to contrast with the seducive view of the blues. This is inspired. To capture just the bottle lighted, with the silhouette completely intact adds more contrast to the front zones without denying the power of the shapes of the canyon walls to frame the view. Very well thought out.
Chris Crevasse , October 05, 2000; 02:19 P.M.
Great shot.
The large dark area on the right is perfect -- it creates a sense of the mass of the canyon walls. If it were reduced, you would be left with just a frame. Outstanding work!
Patanjali Parimi
, October 05, 2000; 08:12 P.M.
Cool!
Very lovely and pleasing picture in deed. The extra negative space on the far right comeplements the standing man and gives a terrific balance. Someone above suggested to crop the dark foreground. But, I feel the picture loses the punch if it is cropped an inch on the right or the man is removed from the scene. It will then be a symmetric mediocre pic.
wouter truyen , October 06, 2000; 06:39 A.M.
Dude with water!
Don't you have a close-up of the dude holding the 'grey map'?
Congratulations, Tom. Very nice picture. Like someone allready mentioned: with the person in it, this picture tells a story. Tell me about it! Waaaw!
Katie Jergens , October 06, 2000; 09:43 P.M.
Who's perspective?
I think that cropping the right a little would give more a sense of that man's view of the canyon, and not the man-behind-the-man's view. Cropping might help us forget about the photographer and focus instead on the man's perspective at that moment, and also maybe balance out the black in the picture with the delicate blue cues. In any case, lovely.
Teresa Pelaez , October 07, 2000; 03:19 P.M.
Great!
Great image, beautiful colors.
Mike Matcho , October 07, 2000; 10:14 P.M.
Incredible Shot
The shot is incredible whether you crop out some black on the right or not.
Robin Gohil , October 08, 2000; 04:31 A.M.
Beautiful Picture!!!
well its a very good picture..landscapes are always good but its the art of teh photographer to make it look better ..like u have done...perspective view in the picture is simply the great ....by the what time is the picture taken....

Is absolutely gorgeous
Can't add anything to that - completely breathtaking, composition perfect.
Andrew Dytham , November 07, 2000; 09:22 A.M.
Nice
Great composition, and nice sense of size not always captured in pictures of such a place.
Well done.

Wish I was there
AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh.........
It's calming just to look at it.
Marcello Galli , January 18, 2001; 04:24 A.M.
I like it
Good, beautiful composition I like it a lot...how not to banalyze a place dayly banalized by anyone with its cameras!
Ian Pleasants , February 10, 2001; 01:40 A.M.
Crop it
Hack the Black!!
Cropping the right side really strengthens this composition.
stick yer hand up there!
Patrick Henigin , February 17, 2001; 02:21 A.M.
If I live 200 years and take 1 photo like this I will be amazed. Hold your hand over part of the right side to see image cropped. Then you will see that it is perfect the way it is
Michael Lepard , February 17, 2001; 12:00 P.M.
Natural Solitude
Wonderful shot, well exposed, well framed and well done. The figure in the picture really adds a lot to it, and says a lot as well. I think you have made an excellent decision including this person in the photograph. Enjoy how it is a blue monotone photo and it softly says to me "solitude" and reflection.
Excellent.

Cover shot!
I can't add anything to the comments above. They said it all. This should be the cover for some outdoor or travel mag. I'd bet the bottle contains water. I hear it's quite a trek on those trails.
Patricia Lee , March 21, 2001; 05:12 P.M.
I like it! The extended amount of black on the right side could be cropped, OR it could serve as black background for light or white title text for the magazine cover application someone suggested.
The object in the hand is the only distraction, IMO. And yes, you need lots of water to hike the 13 miles round trip, especially in hot weather. I've done it.
Roberto Lins , April 03, 2001; 03:31 A.M.
Well composed
What I like about this photo is the different view. Grand Canyon photos tend to be boring, commmon and flat, i.e., it's always the Canyon and sometimes the Colorado River passing by is shown. Here the use of the backlit cliffs as window-type frame contrasting with the slightly hazy ski works pretty well for me.
The out-of-center human subject is a plus adding the notion of perspective and probably the most important element in the overall composition.
William Latimer , April 17, 2001; 01:02 P.M.
Teach me please!!!
I am new to this site and to photography. It would be very helpful if the technical details were provided and commented upon.
Brad Martin , May 15, 2001; 02:42 P.M.
Wonderful. The only thing that I'm not a fan of is the black border. It draws my eye into the top left corner, away from the subject.
Kevin Camp , May 23, 2001; 03:27 P.M.
Lovely color. Definitely illustrates the impressive scale of the scene.

great picture.
could share some technical information with us ?
Elaine Ross , June 09, 2001; 12:19 A.M.
It's not orange
I too love the blue, but I also love the black, yes, on the right side as well. I think the photographer is also a painter of pictures- he created for us a unique frame to mold the depth, the figure. Perceptions get skewed. Very cool.
Aniruddha Jagannath , August 27, 2001; 06:47 A.M.
I'd jump for this!!
Cool blues, totally cool! One has to be lucky to see a morning like this, let alone capture it the way u've done.. Excellent!

You've captured a beautiful moment. I like the deep colors and the composition is right on. Putting the man into the photo adds a sense of scale and makes me feel like I was right there.
Congrautulations.

Persobnally I find the black area on the right a little too big
