The smoke is terrific but personally I find there's no need for so much space at the top and I'd also prefer to lighten up the bottom zone a bit. But I think this is personal and you might find that others love it just as it is.

The picture was prepared on an uncalibrated LCD monitor, on which the details on the bottom part clearly visible. When I looked at it on a uncalilbrated CRT monitor elsewhere I saw that the bottom part looks very dark. Obviously,the resulting effect is detrimental to the image :(

This is a fantastic image. I am amazed it is not rated higher. This is fine art at its best.

as far as i can see there is nothing wrong with the image to my eyes. if you're not happy with all of the white space then that is understandable. but the breakup of the symmetry by the vertical rolling smoke is wonderful. for some reason i get the same kind of feeling i get when i see something by robert parke harrison. but this is a wonderful image. certainly my favorite out of your portfolio. another quick note, after looking at this for a bit i do wish the white space was enclosed somehow. you can almost see a half oval til about the top 1/3 of the frame. if that shape was closed i think it might make it a bit stronger. then again, it could ruin it with such content centered.

Kris, I agree with you on slight weakness of the image because of the extra white space above. Fortunately, this is one of three versions of the image, I made last year. The other two versions have darker top third, as you suggested. The other parameter that bother, at the time. was the space at the very bottom of the image. This one seems too tight to me. I still can't make up my mind, how much neagtive space, it needs.

I think the space at the top is part of what makes this image something one keeps coming back to explore... somehow the lack of textbook college photo class cropping -- the "imbalance" -- removes clean-cut closure...? It suggests both a smallness and an ethereal greatness: room for growth and hints at that inevitability... it *really* works. It is more visually pleasing, I guess, if I crop it closer and give it more light-dark balance, but is PLEASING what you're really after? "Pleasing" walks towards mediocre, in my opinion.
