Her Secret Life

Taken in my bathroom. Placed the camera on the floor. The girl in the image is myself. I had the shower on, smeared myself and the walls with black paint. Thank for your critique.

You took a lot of effort for this photo and its shown. It looks documentary. 6/7

David Malcolmson , March 26, 2005; 03:45 P.M.

Woul be at home in a '60s 'True Crime' mag. This is very dark. If you were keen to make an impression, you certainly succeeded with this.

anne knes , March 26, 2005; 04:11 P.M.

7 / 7.

BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christopher Appoldt , March 26, 2005; 05:38 P.M.

Jebus - that's a truly graphic shot. It's fantastic, though - right down to the reflection in the water.

Lee McLaughlin , March 26, 2005; 06:57 P.M.

This is one of the most arresting self portraits I have ever seen. It is more intriguing then it should be perhaps. Very nicely executed. I wish the toes were a bit sharper, but hey--just being picky, here. All in all a 6/7 for my side.

Knicki ?!? , March 26, 2005; 10:17 P.M.

I'm torn on the foot focus issue but think its stunning as is.

!!!

excellent and wonderfuly disturbing image. i think that the foot focus is great. my eyes were drawn to your face and hand first. (almost calming) but..then the violence of the paint/blood splashes took over. the only thing i would change would be the dress. a simple white would be less distracting. on the other hand, in the c.s.i. world, it does make for a good 'clue'!

Autofocus!?!?!

This is the problem with autofocus and the important work being left up to the camera rather than the photographer. This photo would border on brilliance if it wasn't for the poor use of focus and depth of field. You've obviously got great vision, just don't forget about the little things. Bravo!!!

Marian Vicena , March 29, 2005; 02:43 A.M.

really great stuff, but the depth of field and focus is really what spoils the picture.

anyway, I like the idea very much and wonder if it wasn't hard to clean the black paint :-)

focus mankind , March 29, 2005; 04:01 A.M.

I'll see the points above with the autofocus - BUT it works for me. Sometimes I like especially compositions that are "hard to be read by it's viewer", since there is a need to invest more than a second to get the message. Just my opinion. focus

Adrianna Hoffman , March 29, 2005; 07:11 A.M.

Strong Photo

Strong and deep. A face of life, of disaster. Great picture. Adrianna

Paula Grenside , March 29, 2005; 12:33 P.M.

Strong impact and, to me, perfect choice to focus on the foot, leading the eyes, slowly to the face and reflection.

Christian Deichert , March 30, 2005; 07:41 A.M.

Very graphic and surreal. I like it. The black paint looks great on the wall but looks a little too artificial on your leg with the beading. Hitchcock used chocolate syrup for Psycho . . . never hurts to combine the self-portrait with dessert, I guess.

Richard Emslie , March 30, 2005; 01:54 P.M.

Damn bloody good Dead Girl type shot. Or, was there ever such a thing...
I AM BLOWN AWAY!

And! It's you! Respect! Have fun!

"This photo would border on brilliance if it wasn't for the poor use of focus and depth of field."

You assume that the focus was an oversight. I find that odd, especially considering that so much effort was taken to compose the image. Aesthetics are not the same for everyone. Now the fact that you might have chosen a different focal point is of course valid, but to suggest it was blatant mistake or that there is proper point of focus seems rather presumptuous.

Rajnish Duara , April 01, 2005; 01:18 A.M.

Surreleastic!1

I am stunned at the photo, I first thought its somebodys dead body springled with blood after slashing the wrists!! The story is good, but I agree with the critiques view of DOF. I like the reflection and I just wonder if a corollary shot with the reflection as the primary subject cold have given a different dimension to the photograph. Kerep experimenting, WE ALL ARE LIKING IT VERY MUCH. Regards. RD.

Yann R. , April 01, 2005; 03:40 A.M.

7/7 again !

You have a really great talent. This shot seems made with a heavy work : water reflexion, black paint, DOF... You've thought this shot with a professionnal approach. Can you tell us how many photos you've made in this case to get the final one ?

Evgeniy Shaman , April 01, 2005; 06:50 A.M.

wow!

Beepy . , April 08, 2005; 07:59 A.M.

Ahhhh... already commented on one photo. I had seen this pass by and paused before. Great viewpoint. Strong series of self-portraits you have going there - keep it up.

Mario Paper Martinez Caballero , April 09, 2005; 10:37 A.M.

Bob Sandford , January 14, 2006; 12:16 A.M.

once again, very creative. I agree that depth of field is a problem here but it's obvious why that would be a major difficulty. Still, I think it's a very effective composition.

John Peri , January 16, 2006; 05:49 A.M.

Bravo Sue Anna. This is tremendously inspired work.

Bravo!

Nathaniel Salang , January 29, 2006; 09:52 A.M.

Great use of the mirror reflection effect! Nobody notices it at first but with a longer look, the image reflected on the water suddenly pops out.

Drew Godleski , July 08, 2006; 08:54 P.M.

Well Portrayed

Babtizism 4 of 4

Between the reflection/depth/perspective/and of course the composition as a whole I give it an A+. A little dodging of the face is the only thing I would have done different in post. Pictures like these are what give inspiration and also the reason why your a M. Space friend. Love ya -Drew

Hugo Verboven , October 22, 2006; 09:31 A.M.

WOW!

Ankur Thatai , April 02, 2008; 02:46 A.M.

Good!

This photograph is really a wonderful. it has all pphotographic qualities and it doesnot break and skip as well rules of photography. See in this picture I like the angle, composition and more effective the reflection of subject into floor water. Nothing to say more if there grading more than 7/7 i would choose that. from my side this 100+/100... 7 star shot! Congrats!!! Blessigns Ankur Thatai

Amy Christensen , April 02, 2008; 02:45 P.M.

how are you feeling?

Is this saying something about how you feel about yourself? All great artists say something about themselves in their art. What is the secret?

Edith Frederick , April 03, 2008; 12:35 A.M.

Without sound 7/7

... comes from trauma beyond comprehension. Spielberg's D-Day invasion beach scene played on truly without sound. I have experienced it in a heavy car that glided on black ice through a steel barrier and down a long mountainside breaking trees without sound. Sue Anna your image is deeply imagined and then admirably realized. For me it is like a meditation without sound on the lives of the disappeared.

Sonia Mason , December 08, 2008; 02:08 P.M.

this takes disturbing to a new level. Very powerful and upsetting photo. It actually brings tears to my eyes. This is a self portrait??? Incredible. All of your self portraits are incredible
