I take smoke pictures in my apartment, there is nothing really fancy about the setup. However, one needs to understand the factors that contribute to the image noise and hence, try to increase the SNR (signal to noise ratio) of the final image as much as possible. In my setup, I use a standard 32"x40" black board as a black background. The spacing between the incense (source of the smoke) and the camera needs to be adjusted to achieve 1) enough shielding between the light source and 2) decent depth of field. In my case, the board was placed about 1-2 m behind the smoke source, and the camera with 50mm f/1.8 lens was about 1-2 m in front. Each smoke picture was shot using a single light source(handheld flash) in complete darkness. The smoke is flashed from a very short distance orthogonal to the camera-object line. I use 100 ISO, F5.6, and bulb exposure.

I took many (>200) shots to make this series. Obviously, many of the shots are not interesting, or too confusing. I select few that I like and further clean them. Cleaning typically involves some level adjustments, and curve adjustments. Next comes, the real creative part, which is composing something new using these few good shots. As you all know, all attempts in explaining the creative process are futile. Yet, it is the most satisfying part of image-making process- which is beyond the point-&-shoot photography-, especially the results are appreciated by my peers. It is because this process of discovery that i live to take pictures.
