Denis, a fine start to your portfolio! Is this Liverpool Street Station? I like the composition here with the dominant warped circular shapes and recessive straight lines.

Hi Colin,

I have just had a look at your photo's and I have to say I am delighted that somebody with as much talent as you thinks my photo is a good start.

You're right Denis, I do rather like that. It's just distorted enough, but still recognisable. Nice work.

Hi Denis

Yes, you did very well here. The horizontals are perfectly so, which helps unify the whole image. Welcome to Photo.net!

Hi Denis,

A great start you've made here on PN with a shot like this! It's a real eye-catcher. I love the soft colours it it and all and above the carnival mirror effect. I wish you good luck! Cheers, Ada:)

Denis Sutherland , July 20, 2005; 09:27 P.M.

It was suggested that I crop the top of but I preffer it as it is? any thoughts.

Jayme Hall - Bardstown, KY , July 21, 2005; 07:23 A.M.

Denis- on this one I'd leave it alone. It's a reflection and it's suppose to be a little distorted and anyway I think that little spot of blue at the top needs to be there for balance. I like it the way it is. It would be wonderful displayed framed next to the other one. I love the colors and the form! I would change the colors on the other one to match this one. Beautiful! I'd title them "Inside/Out" :)

Henri Manguy , September 12, 2005; 05:48 A.M.

Excellent shot. Have you tried to do this sort of shot with a polarising filter ? It makes nice iridescent effects. I had load such a photo in photo.net but I have deleted it. If I recover it, I will show you.

Henri

Thanks for your nice comments.

No have not tried this with a polariser but I have recently bought one to help with the harsh light in my malaysia photo's.

I am not sure what iridescent effects are?

maybe you could post a small version of your photo on here?

Cheers,

Denis

Waow!

It's the kind of picture where I get to ask: 'How did you do that?'

Shambhala

Haha - well that a step forward for me if you need to ask me questions...:)

Believe it or not I looked up and shot the picture. Its a reflection of a glass arch. The mirror's were slightly warrped.

Thanks for the comment.

Henri Manguy , September 19, 2005; 02:33 A.M.

OK Denis, I will post a version of my photo with iridescent effects as soon as possible.

Thanks.

Distortion Sandwitch

I like the mixture of straight and distorted that has been commented on previously, but I think what really makes the image is the fact that the clouds behind the distorted lattice do not appear to be distorted, so we have a distorted layer between two normal-appearing layers.

Thanks for your comment, I glad to have taken the time to post your view....I like your interesting description of the sandwich...:)

Dennis,

So... I see... Just a reflection, eh? Are you not the genius I thought you were then? Ha ha!

Shambhala

No not a Genius, just beginers luck....but I like it.... ;)

Not sure why but the colours on my PC are better, this version is a little grey.

Susan Stone , September 24, 2005; 09:23 A.M.

Graphic lines flowing everywhere.

This image has lots of WOW to it, wonderful reflections so well captured. Part of the appeal for me are the colors (the limited color palette), and all the graphic lines flowing everywhere, and the sky peeking through. This is a winner in my book.

Susan

wow thanks for your comments...very nice. I am glad you like it, I took it for the lines but I am bit confused (I am still a newby), you like the lack of colours, should it be B&W?

Cheers.

Thank you for your comment on my "reflections in the gutter". This has permit that I remember that I had promised you some time ago a version of my photo with "iridescent effects". I did not remembered for who it was. Now you can see it above.

And thank you also for your visit in my Aubrac presentation.

Regards, and happy new year.

fanatstic shot! now I understand you....nice one.

Tom Sperduto , April 25, 2006; 08:38 P.M.

Hi Denis - I liked this photo the best of your portfolio, with your birdman portrait being a close second. Your passion for photography is evident, and this photo stands out to me as evidence of an "eye" something you can't teach in a photo class.

I would encourage you to concentrate more on the gesture of the image. The reason why you are taking the photo, the difference between looking at a person and who that person is. The difference between a thing, and what makes that thing interesting as you've captured here.

Keep up the good work! Tom

gesture of the image

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your comments I am glad you came viewed and liked my shots. I am not sure a fully understand how to find the "gesture of the image" but thanks for the comments anyway.

Cheers!

Tom Sperduto , April 27, 2006; 12:59 P.M.

Jay Maisel said it Best

Gesture "If I say 'snow,' I could mean anything," Jay says. "Eskimos have maybe 94 words for snow in their language. What they're doing with those words is observing the specific nature of each aspect of something. So when we think of gesture in a photograph, we mean the essential quality of what the thing is doing. "When I talk to people in workshops and classes, I tell them I want them to be very specific in their seeing. I want the man standing in the picture not to be a symbol for a man, I want him to be that man, and I want him to be that man because he's interesting.

"Gesture is that thing, that signature that defines whatever it is you're photographing as specific to that time, that moment. It's the thing that makes the subject unique to itself."

Tom and Jay

Thanks for your comments, I understand now, I will try to think about that more when I shot, I still have a lot to learn and this is great site to do that. It cool that people point out area's where you can improve and insight's like the one you have given me.

Please come and vist my folio again.
