Very cool!

Tien Hua Wong , November 15, 2005; 09:28 P.M.

Just wondering how it was done with no trace of footprints seen. Great photo!

Tim Everett , November 15, 2005; 09:30 P.M.

Excellent 7/7

Very interesting, great composition, love the juxtaposition of the detail in the upper frame and the relative plain foreground, also the detail in the right side Mountains against the left side in silhouette. Nice one.

Greg Mueller , November 15, 2005; 10:04 P.M.

i believe there are no footprints because the rock has been pushed along by the wind to it's current location. it is a rare phenomenon that also sometimes happens to rocks on top of frozen lakes.

...

Good job Martin. Greg, wind does move them, but only when the surface is wet marko

Jon Bevan-Pritchard , November 15, 2005; 11:02 P.M.

Very neat. Good composition, I really enjoy this type of landscape photographed well.

Stephen Penland , November 15, 2005; 11:37 P.M.

It is precisely this kind of image that makes me want to get into large format. Nice capture.

Death Valley?

Hi Martin. I have seen photographs of this phenomena before and this one is every bit as good as the best that I have seen. Your Balanced Rock is nice too. I have one myself from that location.

May I ask how you are scanning your 4x5? I have just started shooting some 4x5's and would like to purchase a scanner. Presently I scan my 6x7's on a Minolta. Regards.

Jens-A. Wiken , November 16, 2005; 05:41 A.M.

Wow.. Cool! How u did this? It really looks like something "unknown", cause we don't see any foot steps:) Very good, both tecnicaly and artisticly! Nice!:D

Jens-A. Wiken , November 16, 2005; 05:51 A.M.

I just had to trye a different version:P Gave it a different "lens" and added some more light and warmer colour in the front. It's not what I think u SHOULD do,.. it's just a "what u could do" :)

Very Nice

Nice, it's cool I don't think you really drag the rock, you did it using something else, any way it nice photo with nice idea, keep it going.

Rest until the next flood!

Ian Flindt , November 16, 2005; 09:20 A.M.

A phenomenally good photograph of an extraordinary phenomenom!

David Morley , November 16, 2005; 12:13 P.M.

Race Track?

Very well done. I too like the larger format for this photo. Was this taken at The Race Track in Death Valley?

Alec Ee , November 16, 2005; 12:27 P.M.

Crisp and clean. Tack sharp and beautiful composition.

7/7

superlative

Martin Quinn , November 16, 2005; 04:04 P.M.

First off thank you for all the comments.

This was taken at the Racetrack in Death Valley. I did nothing to this rock, no one knows why but these rocks move on the dry lake bed. No one has ever seen them move but the trails make it obvious that they do move. The most common belief is that the wind pushes them across the surface when it's wet.

This is from my digital camera because I have yet to send out the 4x5 transparencies to be scanned.

Excellent Composition!

Andrew Forrest , November 16, 2005; 08:46 P.M.

every time i see this phenomenon i'm amazed - truely incredible. it certainly has a lot of people fooled!! anyway, great composition and you balanced the sky's exposure out nicely. i do, however, find that the ND grad darkened the top-left hill a bit much. just my thoughts. curious to hear what you think.

Chris Horvat , November 16, 2005; 10:35 P.M.

Top picture. What an odd phenomenon.

Apurv D , November 17, 2005; 01:51 A.M.

After reading your description, I must say you've captured this curious phenomenon in an amazing fashion.

Kim Barton , November 17, 2005; 10:51 A.M.

I've heard about the moving rocks for years, but this is the most stunning capture I've seen of one. Beautiful!

Mig Mig , November 17, 2005; 03:17 P.M.

Wow, its an almost impossible to believe shot. Very nice work!

Someone Else , November 17, 2005; 07:59 P.M.

MOVING FORWARD

I just believe this shot...... because I want to... a blue rock... can do everything... JUST GREAT

nathan wegemer , November 18, 2005; 01:02 A.M.

Hard to believe that wind can do this. Wouldn't the rock just dig itself in at the leading edge? Also, if the rock were moving by the wind, it would want to show itself to the wind in such a way as to offer the least resistance... by this I mean it would tend to rotate to offer the least drag, and in the case of this rock I think the sloped face that is before the camera would have turned around, and the the taller, more vertical face that is not looking at the camera would have then been facing us. Really perplexing.

Great, great capture. What a dynamic sky and wonderful light on the hills behind.

Discussion about how the rocks move

Firstly, I need to say that it's a fantastic, atmospheric photo and the large format works really well.

As a geologist I'm intrigued by these features, there's a webpage discussing some thoughts on the phenomenon here.

Best wishes, Hugo
