Photographer's Request for Critique
--Marc Adamus
To get the picture at any cost.
What an unusual place to photograph Crater Lake is. Not only for its
unique geographic and geological features, but because you're always
looking down at the subject. For years I saw the images from the
masses and even some talented photographers that failed to capture
the amazing grandeur I thought was inherent of the place. I visited
many times before I knew what I was doing with a camera and my
images failed as well. The problem seemed to be the inability to
show scale, perspective and depth from above (not to mention they
don't make a lens wide enough to encompass the whole lake). Things I
kept in mind during this trip at all times. A backpacking trip on
snowshoes around the 30 mile rim in five days. I wanted a truly vast
and dramatic landscape capture of the park and thus far, this has
been my best attempt.

Marc, this is...exquisite, for lack of a better word. You put yourself through it to get the shot, and boy, did you get the shot! I don't give many 7's. Where can I see a hi-rez version?

I think some people rate low out of jealousy,I'm jealous of this shot its fantastic ps it wasn't me who rated low

Marc
Fantastic shot. Your use of nd grads is a joy to behold. I fully sympathise with you on the idiot ratings having been on the recieving end of it myself. Which I find very demoralising as a beginner when some people are rating my attempts much higher. Once again I think to my eye you now have one of the best landscape portfolios on the net, keep up the wonderful work.
Cheers
Phil.

Hi Marc, I thought you were gone.
I have not seen you for a long time on here and your pictures were gone?
Love the Picture by the way, I see you got a 5D must be nice :o)
About the moron, There are lots of them out there I have a few that fallow me around too. (work in progress, hint hint lol) and they will aways be out there try to let it go and not take it personally, I know its hard because its your work and you take pride in your efforts but just remember the majority out there love your pictures and the effort you put into them.
I wish I could go and see the things you do. You are and have been blessed my friend.
DK.
P.s. I think your Bio Pic is amazing too! Keep up the great work and enjoy God's creation not everyone gets too.
Marc Adamus
, January 27, 2006; 05:24 P.M.
Good to hear from you David. I'll have to browse your new work as time allows. I haven't been around much. I left P.Net after being demoralized by the lack of honest critique and coward raters with nothing to say. It's hard for me to convince myself to keep posting images for critique here and rarely getting anything worthwhile. I was lured back by lots of folks sending emails and encouraging me. I must admit it's more of the same though - P.Net has the worst critique system on the net I've seen. I guess I'm sticking around this time though, if for no other reason than to just share the beauty I find in my travels.

Marc, this is astonishingly perfect. After reading your remarks about trying to capture this scene, you have done it! I love looking at it, is so soothing and exciting and cold and dramatic, it's all things! 7/7!
David Koens , January 27, 2006; 05:39 P.M.
I hear you Marc and I agree with you 100%.
As far as the critique system here goes. I am kind of new to Photography myself and am not sure how to Critique very well, I like to leave it to the pro's but if I like a picture I sure will say so. :o)
Take care Friend, I have been going kind of slow these days myself. Sure wish I could see the things you see in person though, I am jealous.

Dedication
Marc, you show the dedication in obtaining your images necessary to achieve a shot like this, and you have been well rewarded for your efforts. Your composition showing the curve of the snow at the foreground, leading my eye toward the lake, then mirroring the flow of the shore, is wonderful.
John Patrick
, January 27, 2006; 06:06 P.M.
Fantastic. The contrast in scale between the snow detail in the foreground and hills in the background is amazing. Good to see that all that effort has paid off.

Christoph F , January 27, 2006; 07:07 P.M.
Marc, as exquisite as they get and a 7/7 hands down. What I like most is the light. The soft glow on the lake and warm hue of the foreground snow. I cannot help wondering though how the photograph would look if you could have included the entire rim - maybe by stitching together two photographs?
Again, a truly exquisite photograph and thank you for bringing the beauty right to my living room!

Absolutely stunning. The scenery, the light, the colours, the explanation. You made the step from film to digital. Still it looks very much like your usual interpretation of Velvia. What about the capacity of the 5D to shoot in very cold conditions? Did you ever have problems? Following the manual this camera is not made for such conditions. Glad you are back. Karl
Ferrando Flores Rafael , January 27, 2006; 09:01 P.M.
Great composition with stunning light once again Marc!, high impact WOW!
I love how you worked the foreground curve, that snow cornice is fantastic.
Im not bothered by the uncomplete rim, it is indeed a nice starting visual point, did you tilt the camera a bit down for another take?, lets say upper frame where the left group of dark clouds ends, sure would love also this variant.
I would really love to go and visit again your great land sometime!

Marc,
This is without a doubt the best image I've ever seen of the lake. The colors, composition and the sunrise really are outstanding. As for the 4-4 rating, I get that all the time. No matter what you do, there will be some idiot giving a low rating with no explanation. Where the hell are the moderators.

A 4/4... dude, you got screwed. I can't figure it out either, there's always some genius who rates on the extremely low end. Whatever. May they live forever trapped in that skull thing of theirs. Regarding this image, Marc, you know it's amazing, the rest of us know it's amazing. That's all that matters. One of your best! I'm headed to Crater Lake myself in May but I'm sure I won't capture anything like this. Cheers! James

rating and 5D
I am interested in how the battery on the 5D worked in the 5 day snow trip.
Also, in regard to the 4/4, pershaps we should just ask for opinion and not seek a rating? I have been mystified with the odd low rating too?

Silence
Some 10 years ago we visited Crater Lake on a late August evening. There was still snow and we were the only people around. The quality of the silence was amazing. Although your picture is of a winter time Crater Lake, it captures exactly that atmosphere. Apart from being an excellent picture...

Marc, what a stunningly beautiful image! The warmth of the sun and the cold of the atmosphere are palpable in the image, and the landform juttting into the lake strengthens the composition. It obviously took a great amount of effort to get to the location at that time, and you were amply rewarded. Kudos!
glenn traver , January 28, 2006; 09:23 A.M.
Great Adventure
Marc, what amazes me as well as the excellent composition is snow shoeing through and area with 200 inchs of snow for 5 days, I would have to say there is and element of risk not be taken for granite.truely beautiful~ GT

Spectacular Marc. This shot alone no doubt made your 5 day effort worthwhile. Some minimal suggestions you might care to consider, in case no one's already raised them in the many comments this shot deservedly received, are lightening some of the grad effect in the blue sky areas, and possibly leaving a slither more snow along the lower edge if available, 'though I'm not sure about the latter suggestion - I'd probably have to see the result.

best representation I've seen of Crater Lake
excellent image Marc. This version for the internet sharpened to show a light halo along the sky/rim line. You might try (immediately after sharpening) doing a Edit>Fade Unsharp Mask with a change in the blending mode to "Darken". The sharpening will be isolated to the dark side and light halos will disappear.
Snowshoer? You should come up to Mount Tahoma Trails near Mt Rainier to our hut-to-hut system with grand views of Mt Rainier, the southern Cascades and Mt St Helens. http://mounttahomatrails.org

Steven Snyder , March 10, 2006; 09:07 P.M.
I have to say this is an awesome picture. I rate it 7/7. This is probably just a fine point, but the left side (just above center) seems to be tilting down just a bit. I figure it is due to the lens at 17mm and the full frame sensor. It could be lifted just a bit using photoshop CS2 "transform, then warp" to more accurately reflect the actual scene. I realize the lake curves back at that point, but give it a try and see what you think.
Kindest Regards, Steve

Not sure if people realize the effort to capture this shot - 5 days on top of 200 inches of snow (Marc, did you have a tent or just dig a snow hole?). Another fine capture Marc. I wouldn't worry about the ratings really. Why not just post for critique only? Anyway, *YOU* surely know this is a good image and not, in anyone's books, a 4/4. The personal problems that some rater might have are nothing to do with the quality of your work, they are completely separate issues and entirely unrelated. I've received a few 3/3s lately and honestly it makes me giggle. And I don't think that's being "big headed" of me.

Wonderful colors. Looking at this photograph I can feel as I am there in the cold silence, thinking how could that moment be kept in a so EXCELLENT shot.

This is obviously a beautiful photo, it captures the magnificence of crater lake (if you've ever been there you know then it's not an easy thing to do). But, it does more than that for me. It inspires me to drop everything else in my life and pick up my camera and become passionate about photography. I hope one day to take an awe-inspiring photo like this one. Thanks so much for posting it Marc, it's inspired me.

Wow...
Very inspiring. As a beginner photographer, it's images like this that motivate me to want to get out to nature and keep learning about photography until I can one day take a picture like this one.

A rare feast for the eyes !, an extraordinary photo of an extraordinary place. This kind of result really worth the efforts and hardworks of getting to such a place.

Fantastic Shot ! Regarding the ND filter its good execution but of course its noticeable, I've always wished for a ND wash I could paint onto a glass filter exactly where I want the neutral density to appear... some may think that idea is nutty, but it would allow film and image sensors to more faithfully replicate what the eye sees because otherwise bright areas get washed out and dark ones disappear. The only problem would be the extra time it would take, but if you were set up and anticipating a dawn shot like this one, there might be ample time.
Beautiful quality of reflection on the water. Pertaining to the sky, does your camera lose the detail in the bright highlights like mine does? I'm shooting digital and no matter what I do, I lose detail which is very visible to the naked eye in my sunrise and sunset shots- I'm wondering if you recall if the brightest area of this shot had more detail in it in so called, "real life" ?
Keep up the excellent work!

Exceptional Image
I applaud your perseverance to capture a truly outstanding image. This is not just a photo but a true image, created to guide a viewer and convey the emotion and feeling that was being experienced.
That being said, I am not so sure you used ND grad filters on this, it appears more to me to be creatively done in photoshop, as some photogs. do in the darkroom, buring down the corners to focus the viewers attention.
I would have preferred to see the corners of the sky to be a bit brighter to allow the viewer to navigate the image without as much direction from the photog. The darker corners carry the eye immediately to the brightest area and makes it more difficult to continue in the natural flow of the beautiful compostional design of this image.
As to the composition, you used the elements presented with precision, the circle being incomplete, the diagonal of the island, continued in the clouds to the upper irght, and the darker tree line leading from the foreground snow brings your eye around this magnificent image in a continous flow.
This is my first critique on line and I don't know how you guys are using the "rating" system, but I would give this a 6/6 or better.

I used a 2-stop ND grad and only make minor touch-ups in PS after RAW processing. The dark corners of the sky are unavoidable with the sun in such centered position, but I've made improvement efforts there after posting the image (after so many comments I don't feel like reposting it). I also feel the saturation is overdone slightly, the background rim is a bit dark and the blue's are too pronounced (all minor things). Thanks. Don't worry about ratings.

Stunning!
What a beautiful shot of Crater Lake! I love the combination of snow and sunset... the glow is so peaceful and soothing - this is the exact kind of place I long for when I need to be alone and want a place where nature can rejuvinate me. When I opened the page with this photo on it that's the first thing I thought.... 'now THAT'S a place I'd love to be!' And honestly, no other photo of Crater Lake has ever made me feel that way! Excellent, excellent shot!

Most Excellent!
Being a beginner to photography, I don't know all the sublties that go into making a great shot...But I know what I like! (to steal a paraphrase). Since my main interest is landscape photography, this is exactly the kind of shot I am striving for. The more I look at it, the more I see.
This is the type of photograph that I would actually buy a print of...7/7!

Marc, doesn't look like you need anymore comments, but it's one of those photographs, I just gotta say something about. But, I can't seem to find the words, it's absolutly amazing. You were one of photographers who's work I fell in love with when I started looking at this web site before I signed on. Your work is amazing. Keep it up, give us beginners something to shoot for.

Lincoln Westermann , June 15, 2007; 01:12 A.M.
Very humble approach for such a beautiful image! I honestly don't know exactly why it's good, other than the wide angle lens/zoom and the fact that the coloring is amazing. It's also very clear and just generally turned out well. I like how dark it gets around the top and sides. I think you did an absolutely wonderful job at capturing this lake, and if you surpass this one, I sure want to see it because that would be an accomplishment worth noting. Great job, I love it!

Your photo is simply breathtaking. I just found this website today and have been checking out a bunch of photos. Your picture drew me right in. I have lived in Florida my whole life, but looking at your picture makes me want to lay in the snow and make snow angels, go ice skating on a lake, then have a snow cone for dessert. The lighting and the stillness of the lake make it almost surreal. Beautiful.

Crater Lake was one of those spots I always enjoyed visiting as a child growing up in Oregon. As many times as I've been there, all times of the year, I've never seen it like this! I want to know the compass coordinates to get to this exact spot! Beautiful! 7/7!

The most difficult in this kind of images is to fix correctly the white balance or to want reproduce the most exactly tone in the snow,we can see a good job about these aspects, all the rest works very well too.Best regards

"Timing is everything". I like the combination of colors in this; and the way that the ambient light reflects off the snow is almost surreal. Not the usual "postcard" picture of the lake; the perspective really gives a sense of the majesty of the place. Worth the effort!
