Really nice! The train has been perfectly captured, and I like how the tree on the lower left cornes frames the picture and contrasts with the sunny entrance to the tunnel on top.
I'd love to know the technical details of the shot.
Cheers.

Technical Details

This image was taken by moonlight at night in order to allow for a very long exposure time. The exposure was 4 minutes at f/16 and ISO 400 under the nearly full moon last week. I agree, the branches in the lower left contribute a lot toward the mood.

Thanks for your comments!

Thanks for the details, Kit, they make the shot even more interesting. I couldn't believe what I see is actually moonlight!
I hope to one day take shots like this one.

I really like this photo Kit. Brilliant exposure control and a top-notch composition of a fascinating scene. Really enjoyed going through your portfolio, a real feast for the senses. Thanks.

Haven't seen anything like this yet. Great idea and brilliant work. The exposure is superb. Just wondering how you got the reflection of the rocks on the train. Or maybe it's not a reflection? Best regards, Chris.

Reflection

I've had several people ask me about that "reflection of the rock". That is one of the wonderfully ambiguous aspects of time-lapse pictures that capture motion - you can see right through them if the exposure is timed correctly. The train was only passing through the scene for the first 2/3 or so of the approximately four minute exposure, so the scene behind the train shows through the image of the train itself. That gives a nice ghosting effect.

This image is the last of five or six I exposed that night. Each had a train in the image for some fraction of the exposure time (it is a busy track!), and most had the portal of the tunnel illuminated by the headlight on the train. For this image, I waited until the engine and its bright headlight were just inside of the tunnel, you can see some light reflecting from the tunnel back along the first bit of the train just outside the portal. That seemed to give the best effect, since trying to balance a part of the frame that is brightly lit by the headlight against the rest that is illuminated only by moonlight can be done but isn't easy. Of the several attempts I've made at this sort of thing, this is the best one so far.

Here is a hot link to an image on my web site that balanced headlight and moonlight through compositing several images. That is the method of balancing a wide range of light brightness that seems to have worked best so far.

Yeah,it's really a ghost train.I don't know where you stand to shot this one,I like the reflection.

Very good night photograph. The "ghosty" train is perfectly captured. Long exposures at night often reveal "weird" aspects of reality. As you, I'm too a night light enthusiast. Congratulations. (Your website is great.)

Great concept. 7/7.
