Great high-speed shot! Was it taken with some kind of auto trigger or simply thru bulb settings ?

Mark Trueman , August 30, 2006; 08:05 A.M.

Its an auto trigger device connected up to the Vivitar 285

A Crown of Abstract!!!

maybe this will help

you asked for new ideas...I can see a light reflection in the paint, which gives me some thoughts. 1. Either intensify the light and get rid of the diffusers to see what you can capture by working with the reflected light or... 2. use more light but difuse/reflect it more completely so you don't get the reflections and shadows. 3. I noticed that you're using depth of field to make the rear of the splash out of focus, shorten the depth of field considerably and pull in realy close so that it feels like the paint is going to hit us. Maybe put a glass in front of the lense and try to catch a drop on the glass 4. Don't use a shortened depth of field, put it all in focus. 5. Lower the camera. I hope this helps.

This is interesting and nice! it reminds me both of the crown, and of a frog [i can't explain why].
I would leave more black space at the bottom: cutting the drop is a little bit harsh ;)
I like the merge and blend of colour you have produced here, good job!
Shall I guess? You did several attempts (red, then blue), and then you dropped green, and managed to capture it in a successful way?!? :))) I am just curious :)
Good idea and nicely registered one, too! :)

Ive got the red and blue shots previous to this as well and some of these are just as good. I am going to try some of the suggestions, as well as using a gloss black surface to get a reflection. This should give the image a better aspect i feel, with it being a lot taller. Id also like to put the drops in an environment of some sort. I have some ideas flying around my head that i hope to employ over the next week or so.

The comment about increasing depth of field is not an easy one to employ. The problem is that the flash has to fire at its shortest duration, which means its lowest power (or at least a very low power). In fact, my bowens heads do not fire for a short enough duration to capture the drip sharply enough (min of 1/1000 sec approx) so i have to use my vivitar (which fires at 1/30000th of a sec on its lowest power. If i increase the flash power then the scene is lit for too long and it blurs. So my depth of field is limited by this, the only way to increase it would be to up the iso, and its already at 400 to capture at f11.

iso issues

This is a digital image yes? What would be the drawbacks of increasing the iso?

Mark Trueman , September 01, 2006; 12:05 P.M.

the only drawback would be the increase in noise which would be more noticeable due to the dark background nature of this image. I could use a noise reduction app i suppose.

I'll give it a go on my next image and see what i come out with

i see what you mean, i was so focused on the splash that i didn't notice what a clean rich background you captured. nice one. cant wait to see your next attempts.

Originality

I have seen this shot millions of time, but finally yours is the ORIGINAL version, something never seen before. This is creativity! Thanks for sharing Mark!
