Twilight Sweep

Friendly Beaches, Freycinet Our first shoot at my favourite national park in 2007. The Friendly Beaches is one of the great dawn locations, spectacular sunrises with warm light on the sand dunes and beach seem to be a daily routine. The mood is very different at sundown. The Tasmanian twilight is special, often pastel hues linger for long periods after the sun has set as on this occasion. This one had to be timed to perfection, as the wave swept around past me, the end of the exposure coinciding with the tripod sinking further into the sand. Specifications : Gitzo tripod, 2 stop hard ND grad, f16, shutter 5 seconds, ISO 100.

Very nice filters effect. I just love it.

Josh Ross , June 11, 2007; 03:04 A.M.

I really would like to see this larger but it looks great from what I can see. It has pretty good contrast and the colors are very nice.

Maria Conversano , June 11, 2007; 03:07 A.M.

exceptional

This is very beautiful with the dynamic lines sweeping into and around the image. The purple hue is delicious and the strip of blue in the sky works really well here to enhance the picture at the horizon and break up the colour. very small point ..do you need to do some lens correction on the horizon? Jane

Morteza Safataj , June 11, 2007; 08:26 A.M.

Very beautiful soft colors, Kah!Do you use Cokin P series holder?

Kah Kit Yoong , June 11, 2007; 09:08 A.M.

Thanks for you C & R's. There may be a slight tilt, less than 0.5mm or it could be barrel distortion. I think most of it is optical illusion from the line of cloud getting lower on the horizon while that line of pink above rises diagonally. Morteza, I have a P Cokin filter but did not use it for this shot. I prefer to handhold my filters in front of the lens. For longer exposures where it is more difficult to hold the filter steady, e.g. greater than 15 seconds, I prefer to use the holder.

Andy Glogower , June 11, 2007; 09:24 A.M.

This was definately a magical 5 seconds. Perfectly captured and I envy the sharpness and beauty you have captured here. It is a very pleasing shot to view.

Eduardo Agustin Carrasco , June 11, 2007; 09:24 A.M.

really a wonderful shot, congratulations 7/7

James Lineen , June 11, 2007; 09:29 A.M.

Beautiful lighting and colours. I like the 'swirl' effect created by the water and how it almost forms an s shape from the right hand side, over to the foreground rock, and then to the centre of the frame. However I don't think this is well defined enough to carry the otherwise empty foreground, particularly the right side. I think that area would benefit from something solid such as a rock to contrast with the (beautifully) ethereal water. Just an opinion.

You are lucky to stay in such a beautiful country so fulled with lovely beaches. Gorgeous colours & clarity. The soft twilight moment is so very lovely.

bernie kasper , June 11, 2007; 07:00 P.M.

Amazing scene and image Kah, love the light and the sweeping wave action, great work as always.

Younes Bounhar , June 12, 2007; 10:53 A.M.

Something has to be said about your ability to capture the light in the "golden hours". Your photos certainly stand out in this respect. The soft tones here are absolutely gorgeous! Compositionally speaking I first thought there was a bit too much dead space below the foreground rock and on the bottom RH corner, but on further inspection, I have to say that the water movement you have captured more than makes up for it as it is what makes the shot for me. Outstanding work as we have all come to expect from you :-D (no pressure there :-D).

Hi Kah!

Excellent work here Kah, colors and movement of the water are awesome, the right and middle part of the image is a little bit empty which my eyes take my from left and botton to right and up following the movemment of the water, this make a very calm picture, excellent. Congratulations.

Carlos Perez , June 12, 2007; 07:03 P.M.

Strong image trough the light and the composition

Alin Balanean , June 13, 2007; 08:45 A.M.

I'm really fascinated by the amazing colors and the water motion effect. May I ask how you achieve that pink color? Wonderful shot Kah Kit! Best regards!

Wendy de Kok , June 13, 2007; 12:03 P.M.

^o^

Lovely soft colortones! I would like to hang this big on my wall. Very nice to see!

Kah Kit Yoong , June 13, 2007; 07:36 P.M.

Thank you for your critiques. A few have made comment on the empty right lower quadrant. The idea behind this photo was to show the sweep of the wave going right to left. I felt that anthing interrupting this flow would weaken this idea such as inclusion of any object in this space. Of course whether this wave is strong enough as a foreground is in the eye of the beholder.

Fred Frank , June 13, 2007; 11:10 P.M.

I wish I knew some big words. I would use some of them here. Congratulations. Hey, that was big.

Mark Geistweite , June 14, 2007; 01:15 A.M.

Tranquil!!

Well done my friend. There is a distant cloud line that gives the appearance of a tilt. The actual horizon looks level enough. I am sure the sweep is more evident in a higher resolution offering. Thanks as always, Whydangle.

Jane Goodall , June 14, 2007; 02:35 A.M.

I am definately in agreement with you on the dynamic sweep being important. I think it is a bit of a knee jerk reaction to say that a 'rock' is needed to fill the space when the motion and curves are flling the space.. I think your personal vision is the way to go.

Excellent job

Excellent photo... could you post a larger version for us to enjoy?

Marc Adamus , June 20, 2007; 09:33 P.M.

Very peaceful, natural and classy work here.

Kah Kit Yoong , June 21, 2007; 06:36 A.M.

Leo, I don't post any larger than 680 pixels wide on this website as there is widespread unauthorized use of images. In fact, I have already seen it with this particular shot. Marc, thanks for visiting, especially since your new role at NPN. I should mention I wouldn't be taking landscapes like this without seeing your work on photo.net which has been a souce of inspiration & learning.

Richard Thompson , July 02, 2007; 04:56 P.M.

Very very nice

This is a very nice imaged not only for the colours and tones, but the composition. Also using a 5D one of the first things I noticed was the vingetting. I took 2 minutes to correct this for you. But now I think I actually *prefer* the original with the ving... strange !

Very best regards

Thanks for your comment & post Richard. I agree. Somehow the vignette seems to enhance the overall image.
