Exposing Beauty
I am using my photography as a platform to express some of my ideas about body image and the beauty myth. I reject the idea that "beauty" is a narrow box, limited to those with flawless skin, tight bodies, blonde hair, and perky breasts. Finding the beauty of each person who gets in front of my camera is not simply a matter of seeing their inner beauty; it's a matter of showing that outer beauty comes in a much wider variety of colors, shapes, and sizes than mainstream culture would have us believe. I prefer to take photographs of women who have bellies, "love handles," and soft, squishy thighs. The reason for this is that while I realize that 99% of us have body image issues regardless of our size, images of women with larger bodies are grossly under-represented (when they're not simply mis-represented) in the media. This can lead an entire segment of the culture to feel invisible. It is my goal to use my photography to combat that invisibilitiy. I want to show that not only do we exist, we exist BEAUTIFULLY.
This focus on non-traditional beauty extends from my erotic/nude photography, to my portraits, and all the way to my event photography. My favorite weddings to work for are LGBT weddings. Much like images of larger bodies, positive images of queer weddings are something that needs more visibility as we push this civil rights issue forward in our culture. I have yet to be hired for a polyamorous wedding, though I have every hope that eventually the opportunity will come along. By showing these "outside the box" relationships, I aim to expose the beauty inherent in love. Regardless of gender, regardless of societal norms, love is love. And love is always a thing of beauty.
