Photography Textbooks

Jason Antman , Aug 16, 2004; 10:30 a.m.

Does anyone know what textbooks are used for photography on the high school or college levels? I'm looking for one that's a pretty general book, but not the most basic. Probably B&W, so something like an Advanced B&W Photo book.

Thanks.

My local community college is using the 8th edition (published April 2004) of Photograpy by London, Upton, Stone, et. al. for thier photograpy I and II (B&W) courses. While expensive (85 USD), this seems to be a textbook used by a lot schools. There is a companion website at http://wps.prenhall.com/hss_london_photo_8 that lists table of contents and topics for each chapter.

A couple of the local college bookstores list Henry Horenstein's series of 'Black and White Photography,' 'Beyond Basic Photography' and 'Color Photography.' I believe he still teaches in Rhode Island, so they are well-tested in the classroom.

I second the book, "Photography" by London and Upton. Or if you get a really old one, it will be by Upton and Upton. (London and Upton divorced. You can get one used at a good price ($15 or $20) if you are patient.

London, Upton et al / Upton & Upton is a great book, excerpts from the Time Life photo encyclopedia. Very valuable and practical

I guess you can find used ons for cheap (I got mine for less than $5 at a lbrary surplus sale)
