Swiss Picture Bank

Stephanie Anderson , Feb 13, 2008; 10:56 p.m.

It's the security of a Swiss bank account for your images, online storage guaranteed for at least 30 years.

"Read the terms of service of any other photo site or online backup program: they make no promises regarding length of service or safety of your pictures. In fact, they all specifically refuse to accept any liability for your photos - and they all reserve the right to terminate your account whenever they want. Several sites even go so far as to tell you to make your own backups!" -from Swiss Picture Bank

Swiss Picture Bank commits to a payout if a picture is lost, giving the user 30 times the credit than was used to store the lost image.

I looked at their web site quickly. It costs $0.03 to store each picture. If it is lost, they will pay 30 times that or $0.90. Doesn't sound like a great compensation to me.

What if they loose 2000 of your images (and it suppose that you have already on your personal back up?)

The up-front cost could be cheaper than loads of disk, and it could be convenient, but only if your ISP is willing to let you upload hundreds of GB or TB of data. Sounds like it's only attractive for very small users.

What if NSA puts me on a watch list because I have a secret Swiss Picture Bank account?

I use a spare Gmail account with unlimited storage to save my pictures.

I would be cautious about putting "all your eggs in one basket", and using just one service to store your photos (and files for that matter). It's best to have AT LEAST a couple of offline file storage solutions (hard drive, DVD, print copies, etc.) to store your images, and even better to have your pictures stored online in at least two offline storage providers (Google, this new Swiss Picture Bank, etc.), to give you a little ease of mind to not losing your images.
