Hi Alan

Your landscape and nature portfolio is really impressive. I love your Portland Maine Lighthouse, Tree Foliage and Cabin. Your choice of subjects and lighting made them truly works of art.

I used to edit my photos on Photoshop Elements 6 and I'm comfortable and satisfied most of the time with the resulting images.

Until I have Photoshop CS4, which until now I'm still trying to master. Your comments on the boats on the dock which is really over saturated is the result of what I have read and learned on Photoshop magazine on Pseudo HDR. Of which you opened your photo on Adobe Camera Raw and increase Recovery, Fill Light, Black and Clarity to a full 100% and then opening the image on Elements or CS4 for further editing. But it only works on some images, depending on the contrast and tone of the photo. Most of the time the resulting images are over saturated and if you magnify it to 100%, ugly halo around the edges is very obvious. And then I learned to fine tune it. I tinker with the amount on the 4 process I mentioned in camera raw until I'm satisfied with the result.

Wow to your Mamiya ( and to you of course). I'm really a medium format kind guy but never could achieve what you did. Great portfolio, simplicity forms the beauty. Hope we'll see more from you... MF

No, I think you are not crazy.

Alan, thanks for taking time to comment on one of my images!  I noticed in your bio that you are pondering going back to medium format...I'm starting to wonder if I should move up to medium format with my landscape stuff.  I do like digital, though, so may just wait and see if the rumored Nikon D800 might be a good compromise between image quality and portability/ease of use in the back country.  Looks like you spend some time underwater--nice shots!

Nice work, Alan

I enjoyed looking through your portfolio, Alan. Especially the Mamiya RB67 photos. Your micro 4/3 photos show promise, too. You just need to post more of them.  Have a wonderful holiday weekend.  -Jim
