Great diversity

Charlie, you have wonderful diversity in your portfolio and a definite, unique style that is all your own. I especially like your choice of wide(r)-angle lenses for subjects ranging from fashion to skate-boarders, etc. Nice work.

Your photos are amazing, so very well composed, with such vivid colors. You black and whites are dramatic and moody. I really like your style.

a little 'je ne sais quoi'

Charlie, just wanted to say you brightened up my morning as I reviewed the pictures you took at the Minx launch party (http://www.smartshanghai.com/gallery/644). You have a magical touch in being able to 'catch the moment' and adding a little mysticism to the pictures - wonderful!

Pim Geerts , May 20, 2006; 05:08 A.M.

John Frank , June 29, 2006; 06:48 P.M.

Very good

Thanks for your kind comment on my work...that's what brought me here...the (photo.)net tightenes! I think that you have some very good photos, especially liked those where there is fun and play, your character comes through loud and clear in these, so well done, you obviously have good technique, and the idea is well expressed, I like your first folder of B/W portraits too. It would be interesting to see how you approach the 'photo essay', or how your photograph 'around' a subject from where you are...anything like this to post? I plan to go to China one day...from where I stand it looks the most facinating places of all! Keep up the good work, and looking forward to seeing more pictures from Shanghai, Best wishes, Gavin.

As I've already said I love your work Charlie: it's just Shanghai as I see it, it's beautiful. But I didn't know you were tacking the pictures of the Bonbon's nights ! I saw it on Smartshanghai. So I probably saw you once or twice there.

Once again: Bravo !!

Best Regards,

Ladislas.

4 Realz , March 11, 2007; 07:29 A.M.

Charlie Xia! U gotta keep it real.

Hi Charlie,

I have been browsing on www.smartshanghai.com and I have been looking at your pictures. They are quite enjoyable and I think you are a great photographer.

Nevertheless, it seems that your eyes only seem to catch Caucasians and Asian ladies. Are you blind towards Asian males? If I look at your pictures, I get the impression that you seem to avoid taking pictures of Asian males. From your perpective, the Shanghai night-life scene is entirely made up of Caucasians and Asian ladies. You are pressing on existing prejudices towards Asian males. Hollywood and the advertising world systematically fades out Asian males in North America, but it's very sad to see that a Chinese photographer in CHINA does the same thing. Here in North America, we have a word for you: SELLOUT. You may think that I'm racist but that's absolutely not the case. I just would like to remind people that Asian Males do exist. Especially in China!

So keep it real and open up your eyes. A camera is a powerful tool and it's sad that you are using it to discriminate against your own people.

From someone who thinks that Asian males deserve a fair share in this society.

Matt Watkinson , March 11, 2007; 06:44 P.M.

To the above

Get a grip, dickhead.

Charlie Xia , March 11, 2007; 06:56 P.M.

HAHAHA!!!

First of all, thanks, i'm glad you think i'm a good photographer, however I can't believe you actually wasted that much time writing to me about my pictures on Smartshanghai (SMSH) you don't even know me, and you call me a sell out, what a joke! did i refuse to take your picture at a party or something?

SMSH is one of my many clients, its geared towards expats living and partying in Shanghai. So when Smart sends me out to shoot an even, the majority of people at the party are expats, I take pictures of the party people regardless of race (although i'm more inclined to shoot the ladies, just a personal preference). at the end of the day i give the images to SMSH, and the editors decide which images make the cut. Even then, there are many fine examples of Asian males in the galleries I shoot, how dear you accuse me of being racialy biased? (sexually biased maybe, what can i say... i like taking pictures of hot women... my bad!!)

Have you ever heard of Partylife.cn? i shoot for them as well, they have a totally different target group, hence they send me to shoot clubs where the majority of the crowd is Chinese. If i'm such a sell out why is it that partylife.cn hires me out to shoot more parties than SMSH? If i'm racially biased how can I deliver the goods for partylife?

Do you think i should only take pictures of Chinese people because I'm Chinese? isn't that a form of racism? when will we stop looking at people in terms of us v.s. them? After all we are all people! your comments about me being a sell out only serves to highlight you own insecurity!
