James, although I haven't been exposed to the wide variety of live concert photos that exist, I enjoy much of your work. I think you have captured a great atmosphere in these images. Impressive collection.

Chris P. Sampson , March 28, 2005; 12:14 P.M.
Impressive
You have a fantastic collection of images, particularly the live music, band portraits. You are obviously well in tune w/creating stand out imagery in these situations...Can't help but wonder if they were of more famous musicians, if these shots/concepts would make 'the cover of the rolling stone' ... a joy to view. Cheers

Great portfolio! I'm just begining at freelance concert photography and your photos have been a welcome addition to my research. Hopefully with the addition of a Canon 20D and more experience I can compare my portfolio to yours.

Hi James,
Thanks for the comment. Question how do you remove banding? I have tried just to reduce noise in Ps but does not seem to do anything.
I recognised a lot of the bands in your portfolio and thought to myself, hmm is this guy Irish. Small world!!
Might see you around some time as its defo a form of photography I would like to learn.

My hat's off to you!
James,
Thanks for your kind comments about my Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash shot. I hope you visited my presentations in my portfolio to see the rest. I think I still have more in my files to scan. I'm going through all my concert work from the 70's and 80's for the first time in over 20 years. It's fun to view the work with the editors eye I have now vs. then.
You my friend are a master at concert work. You've figured it out, access is all and then when you get it, you better be prepared to use it. Your work is incredible, great, puts the viewer on stage with the artists. I alway thought that if someone saw one of my shots and was "just sure" they were at "that" show, then I did a good job. I never have seen many of the people you shot live but I feel like I was there! Your mastery of light, lens and moment is something every photographer aspires to.
As I scan my work, I wonder what it would be like to be shooting today with all the red-tape there must be but with todays equipment. Imagine shooting digital I think, instead of with a match needle meter on an old Nikkormat with Tri-X or 400 Ektachrome. Autofocus! Wouldn't that be great.
And don't listen, fill flash would have killed the beauty and immediacy of the Kaiser chiefs crowd shot. It's just a lifetime shot!
If you really want a Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash print from me, just e-mail me and I'll send you a JPG you can print.
Would that work?
