Spirals

I was particularly taken with your Spirals images and would appreciate any tech info that a nontechie such as myself could absorb. I have a black-and-white photography web site, all images having been captured with a Hasselblad camera, but I have recently been working with a digital camera in color and have discovered that I can imagine things that I could not imagine in black and white. It's a whole new experience, and I would really like to carry this as far as my imagination can take me with the help of Photoshop, some basics of which I understand.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your time.

Imagination

Dear Rhea - Thanks for your comment, and I particularly enjoyed looking at your black & white slot canyon photos.

So once you understand some Photoshop basics, you need to jump in. Anything you can imagine, you can create. So give yourself a project. The first one may not come out that well, but you'll get there! Consider the image in your mind's eye, not reality, and let your imaginaton soar.

I have quite a few stories on Photoshop techniques on my blog, see http://www.digitalfieldguide.com/blog/entries/photoshop. They may help you and give you a starting place.

Best wishes,

Harold

Night Slideshow Shots

Night Stars Canon 30D Focal length 17mm Aperture F16 Exposure time 36mins 14secs

Hi there Harold

You have some amazing shots in your porrtfolio. Can I please ask about those photos showing the movement of stars in the sky, where are you located? How far north are you? I tried doing this in New Zealand and could not get the spiral effect. I did get a slight arc on my photos though. I would also like to know what lens you used on your drop of water reflection shot. What was the "F"stop on that lens please? Cheers

Love that most. Straight-line Stills of the star streaks have more reach here when a shutter speed is given. Phillips published a book of nothing but this imagery I noticed once shopping in a camera shop on Queens St., Huddersfield.

To get circles you have to take multiple images and stack them. A circle is the 24 hour rotation of the stars around the SCP or NCP in the northern hemisphere. if you are in NZ point the camera towards the Southern Cross, the SCP (South Celestial Pole) is near the constellation. Go to an Australian forum called Ice In Space and you will find a useful photography section with many tips.
