you are a master on portraits!wonderful!

One hesitation I have with a lot of documentary photography is that it is heavily-weighted towards capturing negative aspects of life -- burden, disease, trauma, etc. I don't want to belittle the importance of this work, but I think it's dangerous to imply that people everywhere don't enjoy the full range of experience and emotion. The compliment I'm heading towards in my (sorry) long-winded way is that you do a wonderful job of humanizing documentary portraiture -- showing life as lived, balancing the hardships with the joys! Thanks for that -- we could all use a big dose.

Exceptional portfolio, the landscape and vietname shots especially are a pleasure to view. Well done and keep up the excellent work!!

I like the pictures that are about patterns and colors, such as the sunsets and landscapes, the architecture and city-scapes, the everyday objects. I think your best people shots are the detached, abstract ones, like the farmers in Viet Nam, or the priest in front of the church door. The peope in those pictures fit beautifully into and are supported by the patterns that surround them. It is a cosmic view of man. Those pictures are truly beautiful. I also think the tango pictures are great, for the same reason. The dance gives them a larger structure into which they fit. Your pictures are about man in his environment.

Hi Joao. You have quite the portfolio. Impressively varied and moving. Your home shots (Where I Belong) are filled with real heart-felt poetry. Your detail shots are also very personal and creative: you have a keen eye. I am drawn in particular to your bicycle pictures, as I am quite the avid cyclist. A lot of people have commented on your portrait series (Faces and Feelings), and indeed it includes some of your best and most intimate work. But not to be forgotten are your travel pictures; the vivid wildlife shots, of course, but two that I find especially well rendered are the Karlova Most and the interior of the Cathedral, both in Prague: here you demonstrate a fine ability to capture human ambition on a grand scale. And, as a wonderful contrast, the picture of the homeless woman in Kyiv with all her dogs makes you wonder what all that ambition is really for. You seem to be a dedicated globetrotter and humanist. I'm glad I stopped by to look at your photos, and I will surely come back for more. (By the way, you asked about my name. Unfortunately, although its origins are Portuguese, I don't speak the language, nor have I ever been to your picturesque country. My father is Goan and I grew up in Canada - slightly different territory I guess.) Regards, Francis

Portraits are of course outstanding, one can glimpse so much of the people behind the camera, just by looking at your work, but you also show a lot of sensitivity in everyday objects and scenaries. hello Joao, have just had a browse of your portfolio. Some very interesting work there. I liked the where I belong file the best. I live on the sea and really feel it is also where I belong. nice to hear from you. thanks for your comments. i tried the panaroma system combination hardware and software and what you see is back (left side) to back(right side) - 360 degrees. i could also make a quick time of the sequence in a seamless 360 degrees. i am really excited and hope to come up with better work in future.

Me encanta que hayas visitado mi galeria, porque asi he podido conocer tu trabajo. Para mi es un halago que te gusten mis retratos, porque para mi eres un maestro del retrato, captando unas expresiones muy sugerentes. Tus fotografias de amaneceres o atardeceres son estupendas, pero sobre todo tu carpeta "Angola" donde has retratado algo que normalmente no vemos. En esa carpeta sobre todo me gusta tu fotografia "The gang", a veces los ni�os con su frescura nos sorprenden con situaciones como esta. I perused your portfolio most carefully. It is an absolutely wonderful collection of images of so many places in this world. If I can state a preference, and this is difficult, due to the generally high standard of your photography, I would say I liked best: Where I belong...Several of the other places reminded me of so much destruction of Life...It could not, however, rob me of the deep feeling of admiration for your work....Bert.

thank you for your comment and rating on my "Pier". I have seen beautiful works in your portfolio. So many too! Like you, I am a self-thought photographer and I intend to remain so. I felt like sharing some thoughts with you since we have the same "non professional" background. First of all forgive me if I won't cover all sections of your portfolio but you have way too many pictures so I'll focus on what really impressed me. Your portraits: I think you have a great talent for portraits and what I immediately noticed is that most of your subjects pose. In my opinion, you could develope a more natural style catching them when they are not looking at you. It's more difficult and you will erase a lot of shots but the potential result is great and you have some really great ones in that collection. Your landscapes: when I started doing landscape (and it's not my forte because I have a stupid camera) I realized that if the first result was good I just passed on instead of really examining with care what could be improved in composition, color balance, exposition etc.. I think you should do many different versions with different exposition, depth of field, filters and anything that you can think of. The great think of digital cameras is that we can see the result right away and make changes if necessary. More in general: something that helps me a lot to take an interesting shot is thinking carefully if what I'm photographing is trivial and I have already seen it done by others or it is something genuine and original. So many times I stop and pass on. Maybe I'm wrong but I am not interested in making a copy of somebody else's work. This way of thinking forces me to really expand my senses and my eyes. I hope this will help you and if you have some advice for me please post it on my portfolio. Great work, I will spend some time rating some of your works. Antonio

Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.

I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. Hey Joao, after your comment on my portfolio I decided to visit yours. WOW!! Yeah, love all your Asia photos especially; you have some wonderful shots. It's an amazing place to photograph, isn't it!!!

I am in awe. You have a fantastic portfolio and I am envious of the amount of traveling that you have done. If you have seen SNL "I am not worthy...". I have traveled quite a bit myself but nowhere near what you have accomplished.

I see travel as being so necessary for us as human beings sharing the same planet. We need to see and experience how others live in order to understand and be tolerant of others and embrace our differences.

I came back and found the pictures on Prague and Argentina very attractive. The idea of using black and white for the shots in Buenos Aires is absolutely excellent.
