Mariellen when I found your comment at the bottom of my gallery photos I thought to myself, "Who is this?" I don't know how you found my works on PN but I'm pleased that you did, AND that you took the time to leave me a comment. After looking through your portfolio I can see the commonality that we share in some subject matter and even more in the way the images are framed. I'll be watching your gallery in the future for hints and tips on how I can be better!

Your Disney shots are an inspiration. I swore I'd never return to Disney, but that was before I got into photography. I lived and worked outside of Orlando for years, and, with four daughters growing up there, I had to make the annual pilgrimage so often I got sick of it. But I was not lugging a camera around at that time. Maybe it's time I took my daughter, AND HER DAUGHTER, and my camera. They are both photogenic, BTW.
I like your other images, too. Your bio has great charm. You may surprise your siblings; IMO art is a product of life as well as personality. When I first started I was immature and confused, as was my painting. (now I'm LESS immature and LESS confused).

Mariellen, first of all thanks for your comments on my portfolio. On looking at your images I am first struck by your great colour sense, then the rendering of texture, composition and light. There is a lot to look at and I will return soon for a closer look.

Thank you everyone who has commented on my portfolio
It means a lot to me that you have come to look. The support you are giving me, along with your thoughts on improvements, is fantastic.
I am already trying new things from looking at your own portfolios and those of other people on PN. I had never looked at my own stuff as a single body of work before, so this has been a very informative exercise for me. I can see an emerging style, my signature, which gives me a place to jump off from and try other things too. Thanks again ladies & gentlemen :-)

Mariellen,
Wow, I was very happy to receive your letter. Thank you so much. You are too kind.
Actually, I've just rediscovered my passion for photography, and am having a great time trying to catch up on what I've been missing all these years.
You certainly are very unique--being a "displaced American", as you put it. I have roots in GB. My family on my father's side is from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. An in 2001 I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to accompany some of my students to Hereford, during which time I traveled to Stonehenge, Winchester, and London.
What a beautiful part of the world you live in! I envy you.
Best regards, keep taking lots of photos, and thanks again for your very kind words.

Hello Mariellen,
Thanks for your kind visit and comments. Caroline as a kid was always my favorite target and I'll put up more some day. The abstract 'sailboat' shot was good fortune. I admire your biographical statement and your quest to express yourself artistically. I've struggled with a similar venture, though less boldly and successfully than you. I especially like your Abstracts, Disney Word, and Leaves and Trees folders. Any thoughts on still fiddling with working in black and white?

Hello Mariellen, thanks for your comments in my portfolio. I just had a good look in yours and I see that your have a fantastic sense of perspective and a very good look for macros and close ups. Hello Mariellen. A beautiful and creative portfolio. Stunning colours and inspiring. It is obvious much thought has gone into your work and these images did not happen by accident. It is what I need right now a reason to pick up the camera once more to get through a flat point in my life. It is often through pain that we produce our best. You have just given me that reason. Thank you best wishes Roy

Portfolio
Mariellen, My, young lady you are one of the chosen few, you have the photographers eye, not given to everyone and your sense of colour is supreme. I am mightily impressed and it takes a lot, I assure you, to make and old fogie like me sit up.
Your weakness, reading your synopsis, is you do not have enough self belief and this is essential if you want to go forward in a profession that is over-ripe with inflated egos.
When I started out in London's West End the doyen of the photographic world was David Bailey. With the arrogance of youth I told myself that I was better photographer then he.. Now whether that was true or false did not matter..I BELIEVED IT and became a professional with a studio in London's Mayfair for 40 years with 5 blue chip companies on my books and I came from a South London Council Estate, leaving school at 14 with no formal training...If I could do it so can you.
Don't take no for an answer and if you have kick down a few doors...do so.
One more thing, do not rely on the macro/micro lens it is only a tool, it is YOU who takes the photograph.Don't be frightened of failure, you will make many mistakes, we all do.
If it is any consolation although I am retired if you had come to my studio for employment as an assistant with your portfolio, I would have though very seriously about employing you...so, go forward and SMILE Joh

micro/macro lenses
Hi Mariellen,
You have agreat future in phtography but only if you create your own, very individual style, and the micro/macro lens will hold you back........If you go through the majority of protfolios on PN you will notice the predominance of macro shots of flowers and butterfly's.Why? BECAUSE IT IS EASY.All roses are beautiful and so are butterfly's, so, up-and-coming photographers get a fine colourful shot and then continue taking the same shot over and over again without realizing that it is the macro lens that is doing all the work.
40 years ago you could not achieve such results because colour film could not cope with the range of colours and macro lenses did not exist.
You must stand back and let your natural creative talent take over and attempt to make the mundane something special by photographing it YOUR WAY.
My greatest problem as a professional photographer was attempting to try to make a bar of chocolate look interesting, and if you think that is easy, try it yourself and see if you can come up with something original.
I repeat, you have a god-given talent...so,.....USE IT>>>>>> SMILE>>>>John

Hi Mariellen
I am so pleased to see that you have found Swansea as photogenic as I think it is to have posted many photos of it. Some of them gave me inspiration to get out and about a bit more and record on film. Most of the pictures on my portfolio, needless to say are from around Swansea as I live here. Hope you had a good time when you were here, which I presume was fairly recently. Best wishes. Taha

Bluebells
Mariellen, Glad you likes the bluebells, I am fortunate, this is my woodland here in Kent and all I have to do is walk out of my back door 50 yards and there it all is, and every year we say how lucky we are. Scrolled through your shots and the macro works,of course it does. I would however, have liked you to stand back with the wide-angle lens and added two or three more of how the glade looks from different angles, you just repeated yourself with the close-up's. Not a criticism, just an observation, you must still do it your way..I will go into the site you recommend and see if I can contribute....SMILE John

Hi Mariellen
You certainly have a diverse and colourful site. No question of your affinity with composition, or the fact that your passion for photography is most evident.
On the lighter side, if you shoot much more, I'll never get in here. It's been 25 minutes, and my great dialip service has only loaded about half your work. I may have to move into the city, where I can get broadband.
Very nice portfolio, Mariellen.

Hello Friend!
Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.
I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.
Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting
