Mary,
You have very nice pictures in your portfolio! Great work, keep it up!
Andrei Pfeiffer , August 27, 2006; 08:21 A.M.
Well ... you must really love animals ... all kinds of them. You have a nice set of images here. I do have one suggestion. Use Photoshop to enhance your images. As far as I can see ... you post them the way they come out of the camera. This is a good thing on one hand ... but on the other, the images will look greatly improved after they passed through PS. You will be amazed. A bit of level correction (to enhance contrast and exposure), a bit of saturation (to enhance colors) or desaturation (to create black & white images) ... and this is enough for the beginning. Just try it.
Congrats.
Mary Fran Loggans , August 28, 2006; 04:29 P.M.
Thank You
Thank you all, Andrei is correct, I have done little to no editing. I just uploaded photoshop and it appears I now have a new skill to master! It looks as though it will take me a while to work with it so bear with me and my photo's until I learn to use it. Thanks Again

You do have a lovely eye for composition and your photos are light (in atmosphere) and very aesthetic to look at. I am very interrested to see what your gallery holds once you learn how to tweak you images in photoshop.

Mary Fran Loggans , September 23, 2006; 06:16 A.M.
Thank you Babis,I'm hoping to do more landscapes soon. The photography has been " a way to get away" without leaving the property---tending the horses makes leaving very difficult--yet I'm amazed at the variety of life I've found in one summer on a few acres.

WOW Mary, You sure don't look like much of a beginner by your portfolio :)
Your portfolio is awesome. You have done a wonderful job on all of them. Thank you for your comment, I always enjoy hearing feed back from people. That is how we learn. And your learning suggestions are wonderful, I do appreciate them very much. I have a question for you, Do you do any editing to your photos, or are they all right from the camera? I am still learning my little Olypum C-60 Zoom. It is supposed to be a great camera, and it does take nice shots, but I haven't learned alot about it just yet, cause Auto seems to do the best job...LOL If you have any suggestions there, besides compositon, I would love to hear them. I need help with editing as well, seems I just can't get the contrast or sharpness right for some reason. Maybe cause it's not working with a good original LOL
Again thank you so much and I look forward to hearign from you more.
Cheri =)

one (few?) more things
Mary,
you clearly have great talent, a great eye and a beautiful property. i certainly cant do better, but i noticed that at times you tend to photography nature as if you are documenting it rather than making a story of it. upon reviewing my own gallery, i find i am guilty of this too. i would expore some new compositions rather than shooting the subject center-on. also, some of your shots have strong shadows - you may do even better at dawn and dusk. keep up the fantastic work.
Nick
Mary Fran Loggans , November 16, 2006; 01:02 A.M.
Thanks Nick, that's a very good observation. I'm still trying to break out of the beginner's mode--still too focused on a clean shot and not a creative composition. A bit trigger (shutter) happy you might say. Also a good note on the shadows, I see it especially in the chipmunks. I've been experimenting with a flash, so I'm hoping that will help. Thanks for the feedback.
jon clark , November 23, 2006; 02:36 P.M.
There are some great photos here. It's amazing how close you got to some of the birds, I presume there were all while just walking around. I love some of the foliage leaves also.

do you market your work? you should.

Mary Fran Loggans , November 26, 2006; 06:30 A.M.
Thank you Joe, what a lovely compliment. I've got all of 6 months experience with this and find I nit pick quite a bit, so I haven't tried marketing. There are a handful of them here I'm really pleased with (and might consider trying to sell) and the rest are waiting to be replaced by something better! I've picked up some great tips however by sharing some of these and am progressing, albeit slowly.

Thank you so much for the idea on bird captures!! Guess I'll have to go get myself a bird feeder - excellent idea! You are the bird master!!! Your bird shots are incredible!! As is your whole portfolio! I just bought my first SLR so I'm looking forward to practicing getting those perfect DOF shots like you have!! Thanks again for the great idea!
Mary Fran Loggans , November 27, 2006; 10:55 A.M.
You're welcome--there are some awesome photographers in this category, I'm a beginner. Watch carefully where you put the feeder, I was limited and end up with some distracting backgrounds (vertical branches) and a lot of pruning!

Stan Marston , December 04, 2006; 06:58 P.M.
Hi,I've looked at your portfolio and all your colours seem vivid and vibrant is this a trait of Canon camera or use of filter?(or even pp) I have enjoyed looking through your portfolio,an excellent collection.Perhaps my colours would be brighter if we had some sunshine in UK !! Regards Stan
Mary Fran Loggans , December 05, 2006; 06:34 A.M.
Thanks Stan, the Canon does a pretty good job on colors, but I have saturated the more recent ones a bit, not PS, a weaker software that came with the camera. I'm working with PS, but I'm finding I lack the patience to do a lot---easier to just try to get the shot next time! Also another excuse to wander around outdoors. We've been pretty dreary here too.

Excelent
Mary, you have some excellent photos here. It appears you live in a truly beautiful area and are blessed with many different little creatures. I think I need to send you some black squirrels. As for my Blue Jays in flight, I too live in a good area for wild lift. Lynde shores in South Whitby, Ontario and Cranberry marsh are a natural stopping over point for migrating birds. We at times see flocks of up to 1000 blue jays come through in early Fall, so my flight shots are really easy as they are hungry. We leave peanuts on the road and they will com in grab them and take off. As long as you?re ready and have a high shutter the flight shots aren?t too hard to capture.
Rob
Mary Fran Loggans , December 06, 2006; 08:19 A.M.
Thanks Robert, we do have a good supply of creatures at the moment. Your Blue Jays in flight are awesome and something I'd love to capture just once. They have some beautiful colors. I've never seen a black squirrel before---really different. My husband grew up in Michigan and they had them there. We sometimes have no squirrels or chipmunks, a good sign we have fox and fishers around so I'm photographing them frquently as they can quickly become scarce.

Hi again.. So what is your definition of a beginner?? :) I opened your portfolio and was blinded by the awesome amount of colours you have on the page.. I do not know why I've never gone through your portfolio before. It is magnificent! You have such a range of talent and artistry. Gosh, your landscapes are fantastic. Welcome to the 1% club. I only expect 1% of my shots to be any good. The other 99% were practice for that good one. You have no idea how many great shots I've taken only to forget to change the ISO or the shutter speed and end up with a teasing image filled with ubiquitous digital noise. Arrrgh. I doubt if the pros do much better...digital film is pretty inexpensive.

New England here I come!
You have a very nice portfolio. I particularly like your Autumn in New England portfolio...a very good eye for composition and color in this series. I would certainly like to put the New England states on my calendar for Fall photography next year.
My only 'critique' would be that you have a large portfolio. Have you thought of possibly reducing it to your best works? Perhaps you could set a limit of having a total of a couple of hundred images in your portfolios and then rotate another hundred images in and out out of your single photos portfolio. This would make it much easier to peruse and appreciate your outstanding images.
Great work!

Nice portfolio Mary! Looks like you have a few backyard bird feeders. Love the fall colors as well, especially the shotes with the white horse in the foreground. I'd also like to thank you for the nice comments on my Grizzly picture. All the best to you in 2007.

Yes Joseph, a few feeders and a crowd of takers! NH is mostly all forest, and we back up to miles of deep woods. I need to be careful though, as I don't want to attract any of your subjects! We have black bear, only a real problem if they have young around (so they say).

Black Bears - No Problem
Mary,
I wouldn't worry about black bears too much. As long as you don't try to hand feed them they pretty much won't bother you. My wife and I used to be concerned about them but not anymore. The mothers are real mellow as well. I once ran into a black bear that was chasing a ground squirrel. He was so focused on the squirrel he didn't notice me until it was almost too late. He burst out of the trees less than 20-feet away, took one look at us, woofed like a big dog and ran away.
Grizzlies are a different story, very unpredictable. The one standing ended up charging a hiker a few minutes later. It was only a bluff charge but gave the guy a good scare. The bear was real mellow as long as us humans respected his space...that guy tried to get too close. The only trouble is each grizzly has it's own definition of what too close is...and it changes!
Does make for exciting photography trips though. I do enjoy your bird feeder pictures, keep it up and maybe you'll see a black bear scamper through one day.

Goodness, what an impressive portfolio. Beautiful colors. Had did you capture so many little critters? Did you use any special equipment or was it a long lens? Curious.
Mary Fran Loggans , January 17, 2007; 09:38 A.M.
Thanks Michael, yes a zoom lens and a lot of sitting very still for the birds and squirrels. The bugs are plentiful!
Paul Chamberlain , January 19, 2007; 06:44 A.M.

Thanks for you comment on my boat. I am fascinated where this rule of 1/9 that others mentioned has come from? Maybe I am missing something.
Now to your portfolio. Wow what can I say to capture the animals that well aint easy and I take my hat off to you.
I noticed one comment above about using Photoshop to 'enhance' the picture. I use Photoshop elements and its a bundle of laughs to learn and great to touch up a picture. However when you romp through this site and look at page after page of photo enhanced pictures where the contrast has been cranked up and colours brightened etc I have a longing for seeing a light touch with the touching.
Its a great medium to learn though aint it
Mary Fran Loggans , January 19, 2007; 07:09 A.M.
You're welcome Paul. Better than half my shots are untouched here-due to a lack of expertise and software up until September. Generally speaking less is more most of the time for my tastes, yet some processing is a necessity in digital IMHO. I do, however, find some heavily processed but very well done photo's very appealing and inspiring. I'm still not up to speed on changeing settings for lighting conditions, so most of these--not all as I am sure is evident-were taken in good light giving good color and minimal need for additional saturation. I have gotten very good though at just putting the camera away on some days!

Breathtaking!!
Dear Mary Fran,
I am a 39 year old mother of 3, and think I need a vacation at your place!! It is absolutely beautiful!! Your images are amazing. I love the vibrant colors of your images and the DOF on the images of the birds is great! I would be like a kid in a candy store having such beautiful scenery to photograph! I'm in Louisiana, so we don't see such vibrant colors as the seasons change, if they change at all! Cyrus led me to your site - seeing your portfolio has lifted my spirits this morning.
Stacey
Mary Fran Loggans , February 06, 2007; 10:26 A.M.
Thanks all, I'm overwhelmed by all of your kind remarks. Having less than a year's worth of experience at this I'm very encouraged! Stacey, I never noticed much of what I captured here "until" I started photographing. The macro lens led to an amazing little world of discoveries I had been oblivious to. The zoom lens led me into the Avian world and yet another set of discoveries. So you may find yourself surprised at what is in your own backyard!

Thanks Lennart, much appreciated and valued as I have great respect for the work you do. Your beautiful landscapes always catch my eye even before I see the artists name.

Saw your bird shots on the critique forum and came here as fast as I could. I'm just now developing an interest in nature photography & it's clear that I have a lot to learn in this portfolio. Will be spending a lot of time here.

Hi Mary
I have paid you a visit to personally thank you for your support of my explanation
to Jan the psychological and historical origin of the aesthetic guidelines as we know. AWESOME has been your word choice to describe my elucidation. It's a proper word to encapsule all my joy of visiting your portfolio and having found experience, passion, technique, insight, and your predilection for visual communication with the viewer in one single word. I wish you all the happiness in the world and am willing to invite you to my tiny portfolio which feels dwarfed against your colossal collection.

Thank you Arash, sincerely appreciate your feedback. I'm a bit addicted to this photography thing so I carry the camera around like most women do their handbag! I'll be by, it was a very enlightening explanation. Anyone interested in understanding some of where the rules in art came from see comment section on Jan Piller's portfolio.

Hello Friend!
Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.
I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.
Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting
Ken

Hi Mary,
I so enjoyed browsing your portfolio. I love all of your New England scenes. There's nothing like true New England foliage. It makes me homesick. I have an aunt in Center Harbor, and my grandparents and another aunt in Manchester. I was born in Concord. Can't wait to visit again! Beautiful pictures. I really like your bird pics. I'm just starting to get into birding, and I'm looking forward to getting some great shots like yours.
Regards,
Amanda
