The Other Side......
Of course gothic is controversial, making for intrigue and thus the fascination and perception of beauty in its own way. Now think about the flip side, light and inspiration, its harder to make happy bright things as tempting as the weird spooky world, but give it a try.

Dear Natalie
I have commented before on the "moths in my head" shot, and I do find your work brilliant. What I find so amazing is not your photography....and please dont take any offense by this, as I'm genuinely envious of the quality of your work, but there is not much left of your photographs in these pieces. I am trully amazed by your imagination. I thank you for inspiring me to delve further within myself to find my heart of art. I would love to see what happens in your times of introspection. Some have said that u are to young and inexperienced to produce such work! I ask what took you so long?

Dart Vather?
From what I read: weird, scary, gothic, dark.... I think your work (and your artistic bias) might be described as "The dark side of the Phorcetography". As such, and in any case, like it or not, your work is a powerful contribute to this very etherogeneous community!!!
as my humble opinion, I might add that the feelings and emotional rollercoasters, typical of your age, show up very clearly in a strong enrichment of this wonderful, "kind of new" discipline I would call "photo-graphic art".
My best wishes (with a little bit of positive envy)!!!
Natalie Shau , June 10, 2005; 07:33 A.M.

i know that some "true" photograpers are really mad on digital photographic art. (especially dark one)
but it's so funny how they show their negative emotion towards this.

Seeing your creative and very emotionally intense portfolio, I can't help but think you must be a very interesting person to meet. Though the preponderance of blood in your photos warns me to keep a safe distance, lest I become part of a prop in your next shot.
Keep it up and ignore the critics.

Jeremy Safran , June 12, 2005; 03:01 P.M.
To clarify ... not angry...
I'm not angry... And I don't need to see pictures of a wedding (let's face it, who really likes looking at them even when it's a friend).
My issue with your work is busy-ness. You obviously have strong fundamental skills, so I don't know why you are so inclined to overwork your work.
I (with red face) admit that I would like to guess that you are young - tendency to find dark and busy better. You obviously have a following of admirers, so who's to say "advantage" vs. disadvantage.
Someone mentioned Dali, I love (and own) his work. But you'll notice that its darkness has an offsetting lightness; and always has a point of focus that seems to suck your eyeballs right where he wants them.
But then again, I can't stand Pollack - and(other) people pay plenty for his stuff.
My point is, to my (not humble enough) eye, your work would greatly benefit if you mature and simplify.
Mark Thomson , June 12, 2005; 07:39 P.M.
Excelent Work !
Your all portfolio is a Masterpiece !!! I am so angry with a person who hit an excelent work of you with a 1/2 !!!!! Some people need a good psychotherapist to help them !
My Best wishes to you !!!
Mark
Eskalilly Beecham , June 13, 2005; 03:50 A.M.
A Good Psychotherapist?
Wow! I didn't realize that a difference in an opinion regarding artwork was a sign of mental illness. By the way, just how educated are you on brain disease and mood disorders? Surely you weren't implying that all people with such an ailment lack intelligence, or cannot be artistically inclined? I mean, that would be the equivalent of me saying that all diabetics are morons and suck at sports. Yes, let's negatively stereotype everyone. We can start with diabetics, cancer patients, and the physically handicapped. That way, when someone dislikes my photography, and fails to sugar coat a critique... I have a colorful choice of insults to use in my rebuttal. "What?!?! You mean you don't absolutely adore that photograph? Well, you just need to go shoot some insulin!" or "You must have missed chemotherapy today!". Yeah, that sounds ignorant... just as ignorant as your comment about a person needing a good psychotherapist, simply because you didn't like what they had to say. Now, that type of attitude and behavior just screams 'personality disorder'. Perhaps you should think about finding a good psychotherapist, and deal with some of your underlying issues?
Oh, and by the way.. I do like some of this artwork, but I've run out of time to comment further. I have an appointment with my psychotherapist. Damn the luck!

jeremy.
very well put. there is certainly a lot of talent here, but it's more than severely crippled right now by a very adolescent aesthetic. i hope the photographer is clever enough to appreciate the irony of great praise from an ersatz photonet audience and re-evaluate her work. i also think a bit of variety in subject/model wouldn't hurt.

Wayne Haas , June 22, 2005; 04:43 A.M.
Your portfolio caught my attention partially because your Pierot and doll shots are reminiscent of a series of paintings and selectively toned-coloured photos I completed 20+ years ago. And to put passing memories aside, I would have been intrigued regardless -- particularly if your are truly as young as some think you are.
Your work displays significant promise, but do be(a)ware of not coming to depend on a well-honed but limited bag of tricks since that can become a crutch that may hold you back. Much of your montage-like work is compelling, sometimes stikingly clever, but not particularly unique either. In general, I find that your strongest compositions are those which are comparatively simple and sufficient -- overstatement is a very easy trap to fall into.
Your style of work lends itself naturally to low key -- perhaps a little too easily at times; if you really want to push the envelope and challenge yourself, do a series in high key with a subtler palette.
media manipulation , June 22, 2005; 09:51 P.M.

I think this is extraordinary stuff. Ignore the critics; I think your impulse is pure and results in original, creative, thoroughly imaginative work. Overanalysis is likely to kill it, instead of improving it.

First of all congratulations to your visualisations Natalie. I'm sure we will see and hear from you a lot down the road. i just like to say to Laurent and maybe to Natalie as well ;-)) that her work is highly commercial and it would come to no surprise, if she would make her way in fashion or advertising with her style in the future. Where ever you choose to go Natalie.. I wish you a great journey.

Incredible creative aggression for someone so young; you don't simply push the envelope you rip it to shreds; your creative insights are dark but fresh, bold, and cut to the (artistic) truth. I am impressed not only with your Photoshop prowess but you have one hell of a work ethic (something no one seems to notice although this is also likely do to your youth). The production of many of your photographs not only require vicissitudes of thought and creative energy but look physically demanding as well. While Photoshop is primarily designed for photographic correction and enhancement, you have clearly taken it to another level---something I have been working on for moons (but can't seem to get there with out Illustrator of macromedia Freehand). Your portfolio helps me to realize even more potential for the software as a viable implement in the fine arts although it is likely doomed to beg for a place between drawing, painting, and photography. I will place you on my list of interesting people. Thanks for the excellent portfolio!

In response to comments by Jeremy Safran & Vuk Vuksanovic
I found the comments by these two guys pretty interesting and quite audacious. Apologies, Ms. Shau, in advance for using your critique post as my own soap box, albeit in your defense. Not that you need any really.
Claims that the works contained in Natalie's portfolio are adolescent is in itself a sophomoric statement and I am a little confused as to why that conclusion was made at all. I think Natalie's work is demostrative of many different things. The entire purpose of art is to communicate, whether it be a linear idea or a more abstract emotion and in the case of Ms. Shau, she executes this purpose with the skill, imagination, and obvious committment that so many artists strive to find. To call her work adolescent would be similar to calling the works of Rembrandt or Vermeer geriatric. This is not an attempt to compare the two genres, only to illustrate the ridiculousness of the assertion that these works are adolescent. Is this also to imply that there is not a high degree of sophistication that is involved with Natalie's (and work similar to hers) creative process or delivery? Like I said, ridiculous. Works like hers are extremely relevant and legitimate in these times and her age has absolutely nothing to do with her ability to execute art, and as anyone can plainly see, an endeavor she does with oustanding ability.
Simplicity in art does work but that is where people go to create safely. An old standby. It is those with the imagination and the courage to see that through to fruition who truly test and redefine the artistic world. Not only does art require the ability to communicate but it also requires the ability to push the envelope, to say something different or say the same thing in a different way. Dali was certainly a pioneer but couldn't I use the same logic in critiquing his work? The Metamorphosis of Narcissus is clearly a busy creation but does it not still communicate a tangible message amidst its complexity?
Perhaps I have misunderstood the position that Jeremy and Vuk maintain, and in this case, I hope I have. However, I find it interesting that when I went to look at their portfolios to see just exactly what "mature" work looks like, their spaces were conveniently devoid of any work, photographic or otherwise.
In any case, Ms. Shau, your work is extrodinary. And I totally agree... your youth is definitely on your side. I hope to continue to see more of your amazing creations.

I'm watching your work since you start your portfolio here in photo.net. I love surrealism, I'm also some kind of painter/drawer. Your works give me lots of inspiration to keep doing what I like. I admire your talent, your way of creat and your work. Your style have nothin to do with Dali as someones says, it's also some kind of surrealism, but nothing even similar to your style. You have your own style, and thats is the most important in art.
You r a great artist, and I think that age doesn't matter when your mind is mature enough to create. Sorry my poor english.

Well...
Natalie, I'm finally getting around to leaving a comment on this incredible portfolio of yours. Forgive the length; I'm inspired to say a few things.
Just so you know, this comment is from someone that (as I've said to others on here) is NOT really into the "dark arts" as others are. Tim Burton, (ie) though I respect his work, isn't really one of my favs.. nor is Salvador Dali. I say that only so you know that the audiences you're reaching are not only those that would be automatically inspired by your work. Even those of us that tend to be more "mudane and boring" are inspired.
That said, Natalie, I've been getting drawn back to your portfolio over and over again by the stunning and incredible style of your images. Your imagination is astounding, and your ability to put it into application as you do is just amazing to me. (btw.. "catacomb kittens" is my fav, I think *shudder*)
Also, the fact that you're so young, and have already achieved a talent level that many would aspire to (and fall far short of) is also pretty amazing to me.
Someone said above that your style would be improved with "maturity and simplicity".. or something like that. Well.. "maturity" can be awfully boring, lemme tell ya.. And simplicity?? Well.. that's just not your style, and I hope they get over themselves. It takes all kinds, and you're one of a kind. Many, MANY GREAT works of art are VERY complex!! One of the many things I've actually loved about your work is the complexity of it.. and yet, the complexity doesn't seem to detract from the central themes. On the contrary, it adds to it and hightens it!
Aren't you GLAD you can't please everyone?? ;o) Keep being true to yourself.
And finally.. there are many photographic "purists" out there that would argue that what you do isn't "photography" at all... and perhaps they'd be right! To me, it's photographic ART!
I'd also remind them that when photography first came about, artists that used a brush, pen, and hands to portray their heart and souls spit in the general direction of those that used mere "mechanical contraptions" to "capture" what they saw.. or felt. Back then, those same "purists" would have been called "cheaters" simply for using that "new-fangled" medium of art.
What you do IS art, and you do it exceedingly well with a youthful flourish, using the digital media as your brush, pen and hands. I'm both inspired and amazed by your creativity and genius with that "new" medium.
Thank you for gracing this site with your talent. I look forward to seeing (and being chilled by) more of your unbelievable works of art.

Simply an astounding portfolio. I don't like to resort to superlatives - but this is my favorite portfolio on all of photo.net.
Until viewing this collection I had (unfarily) dismissed digital photo illustration as not worthy of my time or consideration.
You have made me discard that viewpoint.
I no longer think the visual effect has to be plausible to be compelling and I thank you for showing me that.
Every image here is so obviously constructed with a clear intent. They have wonderful gothic, romantic and occasionally playful qualities and I cannot dismiss a single one (honestly) as overly theatrical. And you do an exceptional job of grouping the illustrations among the folders in your portfolio. A lot of folks on photo.net could certainly do well to follow your examples here ;-)
Great stuff and you clearly have a great future ahead of you.

Whereof one can't speak... Thereof one shall remain silent..
My dear Natalie.. Your vision is truly magnificent.. I wish you the very best in all your endevours. Keep up the excellent work.. As the title of my comments says it: It would have been much better for me to be silent as there probably is no arrangement of words I can say that will compliment your work to its fullest degree. But here I am sinning myself trying:)

Natalie, your work is amazing. I enjoy looking at these mysterious, inspiring images. The only thing I can say is that I'm sad that I don't know in real life the person who is so emotionaly/creatively/spiritualy/aesthetically rich to envision and create images like this. At least so far. :)

Your images are stylish, disturbing and beautiful without looking like the over pretentious goth art that I fell into the trap of making in high school (I am still recovering). Taip pat dziaugiames, kad parodoje skambejo ir Lucas Lanthier kurinys. Nuo tada suzinojom apie Cinema strange ir su malonumu klausom:)
Tik va lb gaila... Gerai, kad visi vakarieè©¡i, kurie rase cia anxciau i frm nesupranta lietuviskai. Nes tikriausiai nuo kedziu nuvirstu. Wow
I've had you on my list of favorites for a while, but never commented. You're amazing. When I first seen your image with the woman reaching into the ground and you see the body under the dirt. It just grabbed my attention. Then I looked at the rest and was blown away immediately. I think you should try to send your work to Tim Burton. He would probably hire you in a minute. You're imagination is very in tune with his. Maybe not the same at all, but similar enough that I think you two could do amazing work together. Good luck in any future things you do. Keep up the amazing work.
and good luck getting a photo of the week, you deserve it.

Hello
Well, what can I say... You really put an effort in your work and it is really amazing what you have done and can do. Really breathtakeing! I love the way you have created your own dimension of life and characters. Your style is tight and excellent developed and there is a thin red line going trough your images. For every picture I open, there is a story leaping trough the screen, into my eyes and wraps my brain into a chamber and I need to figure your pictures out before it let`s go of the grip. Astunning!
Keep on tweaking!
Best regards, Espen

I am a junor in high school and absolutly love your work. I was just wondering if you had any sites that had information about yourself, or if you just keep that private, because I'm doing a project and we had to make something similar to an artist we likes work and I chose you and I have to write about you but I can't find any site that talks about you, so if you could tell me a site that would shed some light on you that would be most wonderful....
