When are we NOT manipulating.

I'm new but already finding the subject of manipulation controversial. I think a great deal of the effect in 'Wind Cathedral' could have been achieved with use of an anamorphic attachment lens at the time of capture, would it then have attracted or deserved any more or less adverse comment than the use of fish eye lens or foggy filter.
