The ones that stand out in my memory are the mummy and the red shoes, a couple of the diagonally-framed architectural pictures, and the woman sitting in profile on the stairs. This last is my favorite; the blurred background is smooth and lovely despite its angular, urban origin. I'll comment on some individual ones too, but the skill represented in the folder is worth its own comment.

doug harrell , December 27, 2003; 10:55 P.M.

I love your street stuff

Your porfolio

Hello Hugh!

YOu are one of the few members of photo.net community who are interested in social issues. I found that your images show people in the most decisive moments of their lifes.

Thanks for sharing your work with us.

Eugene Choi , January 27, 2004; 12:42 A.M.

Hugh

I can hardly believe that you first left a very kind comment on my portfolio, that you thought that I excel at street photography. You're street photos are outstanding, and IMHO better than anything I've done to date. I respect your photography, and I respect greatly, the work you do with disabled students teaching them art and computer skills. I applaud you!

Brendan Turner , February 01, 2004; 04:11 A.M.

Applause

Hugh, It's so good to see humanity in this post-human world. I've been surfing around the comments you make on others portfolios and looking at the work you admire and I'm flattered that you include me in that group. I have also included you in mine. : )

I think your street stuff is the best of what you've done here. I'd go for more subtlety in the digital manipulations in my opinion, perhaps a little desaturation of the colour parts of the colour/B&W stuff...just a thought...I couldn't let it all be praise!

I can tell that photography is a cathartic activity for you. Your penchant for fishing bits of loss out of a world in which gain is the only virtue says something rare about you.

Keep going, find more ways to express the world in normatives, your integrity is admirable.

Best,

Alec Ee , February 02, 2004; 07:56 P.M.

Powerful! You have good sense in composition. I like your street portrait shots.

Frederic Harster , February 12, 2004; 07:34 A.M.

Hugh, I have a very deep respect for both your work behind the camera and humanity. Your street/urban approach is admirable as it goes far beyond formal aesthetic. You really do make an excellent use of your talent.

Best regards.

Stephane Robichaud , February 12, 2004; 10:53 P.M.

Your images taken on the street are simply marvellous. I strongly aspire to create such beautiful images.

Antonio Baiano , February 16, 2004; 04:25 A.M.

Hugh, Many thanks for your deep comment on Yadira's story...it is very good when somebody do understand your job and your efforts...moreover when the one doing that is somebody like you. I looked at your portfolio which I found very strong in an esthetical way and in the contents...I am just a little bit doubtful about the "lost" people, not in the intents but in the way you have developed it, because I don't accept very much stolen photos with tele-lens, expecially if they are about people like these; but this is only my humble opinion and I think that the most important thing are your positive intention of denouncing the problem. I like for instance very much the one of the young smiling at you, it's a different portrait and give a different light on people like him or, better, let us know a little more about the reason of such exhistence. I think you've visited the photos of Jennifer Catron which have a similar content of yours, haven't you? I wll take more time to visit better your very interesting portfolio and leave my comments on your photos. All the best!

Mike Saunders , February 18, 2004; 12:41 P.M.

Inspiring

Hugh, your work is really inspiring to me. I'm new to photography, but the way you capture people, especially the "Black & Whites" and "On the Streets" folders, is amazing. I hope I can someday capture the the entire mood and feel half as well as you do. Thanks for giving me something to work towards! -Mike

Thanks !

Hi Hugh

Thanks for the great comments you left about "What You Looking At?" I was so pleased when the shot came out as it did and couldn't believe they had actually made eye contact. Still a long way to go in Street photography but a start I am well pleased with.

Thanks again Hugh, as always your comments are much appreciated.

Guy I just don't know what to saw your photos are amazing I like a lot of them. I hope to be able to be as brave as you some day. One quetion though. How do you keep from getting your camera taken from you when your doing street photos? What I mean is how don't you get mugged?

Melissa W. - Arizona/California , November 08, 2004; 11:33 P.M.

Thanks

Thank you for the comments you gave me on my portfolio as well as on some photos! They really encourage me to keep at it! I am on a bit of a stand still when it comes to the street photography. My husband and I have moved back to my hometown in Arizona. It is a small town with not much opportunity for much street photos since most people are in their cars! I am sure that I am overlooking opportunities, but I am still getting used to taking photos of complete strangers! I love the results, but its difficult for me while I am shooting! Its probably something that will just come with time, but maybe you could share how you go about this. Thanks again for all the comments, I really appreciate them!

It's not street photography- it's life photography and you have the eye for it.

blauwatsky . , December 14, 2004; 01:15 P.M.

I enjoyed your portfolio.

I respect your work, becouse of very plastic photos of everyday life. Compositioons and colours are on the level as well. Would like to see more of your work.

I was never in England, but your photos has made life and enviroment in London very alive.

Hulki Okan Tabak , December 17, 2004; 04:48 P.M.

Hugh,

I was wandering aimlessly through the pages, thinking about doing something else while I still strolled around photo.net. I came across your moving paragraphs accidentaly - for I rarely remember that our "all-of-it-in-one" pages are also vistas for exchange.

You touched something dormant but nonetheless there. Like the answers we/you seek sometimes without knowing.. Which in the end is exploring oneself and one's surroundings.

I am looking over your photos once again. In Black and Whites, Portraits, On the Street and in others I see that you have grown out of exploring the immediate. Yes, the shots are technically nice but that is not the only point. They are more than sometimes adamant and even "beautiful" in their own way. But that's not the main point..

What matters the most (and I am saying this not in a photographical sense) is that you have managed to reach across in your photos. Reach across and touch others. Others whom mostly are not so lucky. Others who need others themselves. And I admire not only that you are able to do this. I also wonder at your innate ability to handle this without any pity or shame.

You are successful in keeping a distance between the subject and the camera and yet the observer knows you are there and that you are emphatizing. This I thought when I saw the shots in the Reportage section and this I am saying since you unlocked a small trove for me when I read your sentences. Thank you and keep yourself up.

Jeremy B. , January 03, 2005; 07:53 P.M.

I've stopped by before and said I was very impressed by you. And I've returned to learn from you. Your photos are so amazing..

Fantastic

Hi Hugh,

Thanks for your comment on my photos. If I could take photos like yours I think I would give up my day job. Your photos are very inspiring to me. I hope that someday I can take a few photos that are almost as good as yours. I guess I'll have to work towards that goal.

Jeremy B. , January 18, 2005; 08:03 P.M.

You asked me if I used filters on a photo of mine and you also asked me if I could send you the image unfiltered. First Yes but only one Neat Image. Second no sorry I no longer have the before.

I love that I found your corner of this world. I have spent an hour or so absorbing you., your work is energetic and probing. the street work is superb and moving. Excellent work

Browsing through your portfolio I wish so much for more time. This crazy world doesn't give too many opportunities to realx and so what I really like to do-gotta take care of bills :( Anyway, you really do a nice work with the camera. I especially like the section of homeless people and B&W. It's not that other pictures are bad, they are really good too, but those two are the areas I just love to focus on. Thank you for sharing.

Louis McCullagh - Belfast , January 12, 2006; 05:40 A.M.

Hi

Some raw emotion stirred by your images.

Quite a range of subjects but your best are your captures of life.

Intense gaze, shouts LOOK -don't look away.

David Meyer , February 10, 2006; 12:37 A.M.

Well, it's not like you need any more accolades, but since I spent some time going throught your portfolio, I can't see how I could not comment. They sure arn't all pretty, but they are almost universally of very high quality. You've done a fine job of documenting the human condition and the conditioning of humanity. Great work and thanks for giving us the opportunity to see it.

kristina lehner , February 13, 2006; 03:33 A.M.

hi hugh! out of a strange accident i found you and your pictures at the internet. maybe you don?t even remember me but looking at your portrait i knew, that i have met you before.......long time ago in london. times have changed very much and i?m sure you would not recognise me on the street. anyway, your pictures of london are very touching and beautyful!!its good to see that you?re fine! maybe you want to get in contact with me, would be really funny to talk to you after all this time! kristina (austria)

craig h , February 25, 2006; 09:40 P.M.

Hugh

This might sound a bit daggy but the clear philosophical base that underpins your work gives it a strength that is often missing in street photography. You document real people not just make pictures strangers in the street.

"Street" as practiced these days can have a voyeuristic tinge as we leave the comforts of our middleclass existence to venture into the "concrete jungle", only to retreat back into a haven where the fridge has food.

With your approach there is an engagement of your subjects. If I have a criticism you depict elements of the consequences of mental illness but I do not see where you have followed through to reveal a comprehensive storyline. Are not some of your images really more directly about health policy issues as opposed to social justice concerns? There's a fuzzy line in there somewhere, where the two meet up.

Personally, I haven't fully come to terms with the street genre. I probably lean more towards the (perhaps romantic unrealistic) notion of street photography as a dispassionate document rather than a social comment from any particular overt political slant. That is, the photographer acts as a conduit (the messenger if you will) of visual information and it is up to viewer of the imagery to interpret that. But you at least are up front about your convictions and alert to any biases which may or may not colour the imagery.

Anyway we could go on forever discussing over "the purity of photojournalism", where the boundaries of propaganda lay and what constitutes valid social conscious photography?

Interesting stuff, regards C. (the dag from down under)

Maxime Boisvert , April 27, 2006; 01:08 A.M.

I can't find words to describe your portfolio. Many thanks for sharing. I will come back often.

This is all what photography is about

No more words!

Neil Peters , May 15, 2006; 11:07 P.M.

is there nothing in photography you don't excel at? your eye is special. you teach others to see life and art, and then tell us it is the same thing.

after a while of looking someone's portfolio, it becomes obvious, you are seeing their heart. surely, you are an old old soul, here to remind us of all the life, and art, we naively pass by without noticing.

thank you Mr. Hill.

Marjan Krebelj , May 17, 2006; 05:06 A.M.

Very good

Your photos made me wanna go to London ;) You have very nice portfolio (and a good eye for details... i like that pigeon), keep up!

Hugh

Your photos speak a million words. All very good words :) Thanks for your critique on my work.I am still in the learning stage as you can see from some of my exposure errors.Should I use my grey card and my handheld meter or trust my camera meter? And when I use my camera meter I don't know if I should have it on spot or honeycomb when shooting portraits.

The yawning baby is my nephew Nicholas who was getting bored waiting for me to take the shot.

Thank You, Hugh

Dear Huge,

Thank you for your generous comments on my portfolio. I am especially moved by your encouraging words as you are the photographer I wish that I could be. I moved and inspired by your genius of blending photographic art with social concern and public action.

Chris Fraser , July 19, 2006; 08:54 A.M.

A strong and deeply moving body of work. Your street series is particularly impressive. It's not simply the content, which of course is inherently moving, but your compositional eye and control of light that particularly inspire. Yours is a portfolio to which I will return again and again.

Tim Hoy , September 02, 2006; 07:15 P.M.

Lovely lovely lovely

You have a fabulous eye for finding images that portray passion and a sense of social justice. Your political work is exceptional, using art to get into the hearts and minds of the ordinary people who make a difference. Love, love love is particularly lovely. I think you probably don't own copyright on the fire hydrant plate however. Expect Thames Water to charge you with plagiarism! Seriously lovely stuff Hugh.

Very rare portfolio

Messages do exist in photographs, and if someone can pass them better until what I have seen this day it's you. No wonder Judy Ben Jude likes your style. Being a genious is a miserable procedure but creates paradoxically (like we say ironically) funny results. Everyday life is filled with such moments that almost everyone of us do not see or do not want to see, and that's where you fill the gap. Photographs of oversaturated green grasses and the sun passing through some leafs are great results for photo's and 7/7's but as I search for inner meanings and irony shots with messages it's your photo's that help me find my way.

Thank you for these funny, bluesy moments.

Yianni Chrysostomidis , November 01, 2006; 12:33 P.M.

inspiring aspiration

hugh,

the simple truth is, your galleries, particularly life on the street, have inspired in me a solid and tangible, yet indefinable, energy about photography - one that, as an aspiring amateur shutter bug, i am much-obliged to receive as i begin my hopefully-unending journey capturing all there is to see in and about life.

thanks, and also thank you for your heart-felt encouragement and comments on my fledgling gallery here.

best - vikram.

Todd Kowalski , January 02, 2007; 11:42 P.M.

Hugh, I second what Pam said. It was she who led me to your portfolio, and I am happy to have seen it. You are a gutsy photographer. Many, many years ago I had no problem walking up to someone, taking their photo and be gone just as fast. I have since then gotten slower and perhaps more timid, I don't know! I really like your work, and will be looking for your new postings always.

Regards, Todd

Sonny DeLeo , January 14, 2007; 08:29 P.M.

Thank you.

Hugh thanks for your encouraging comments on my pictures. From the breadth, length and content of those who previously wrote here I am correct in thinking you are a unique person. You have a heart expressed through your lens. Capturing the plight of another not only tells a story it yells for compassion, understanding and maybe even a solution. I am humbled at your kind words and you have, by your simple text, motivated me to improve my new skill. I will use my background as I survey each of my next photo ops. I hope you will continue to post your thoughts on my work and I will strive to give you less and less to find fault with! <>< Sonny <><

Hugh

Dude, you have something that most shutterbugs don't have when it comes to street photography...compassion trying know and care about the subjects they pull the shutter on...Well done 'folio.

Christopher Soule , March 10, 2007; 01:26 A.M.

Hugh, thanks for the hard work. Your photos inspire me to take better pictures, esp. street shots.

Todd Kowalski , March 10, 2007; 10:26 P.M.

Hugh, your work speaks volumes on many levels. The "On the Street" and "Black and Whites" folders are ones that I can virtually spend a lot of time looking at each image and feel the circumstances surrounding many of the people in those images. It is one thing to shoot a photograph of another person. It is quite another to shoot a photograph, and then have the viewer really gain a feeling from that image. Your work is very moving and should be seen by as many people as possible. It is often difficult to shoot the sort of images that you do, and it takes a special person to do just that.

After reading your bio. I really have a sense that you are a very compassionate and caring individual, which in my opinion, seems to be short in our modern societies. You are a individual with a lot of talent and soul. Thank you for the words you left on my portfolio. I am quite amazed at what you said. I have never had someone say such things of my work, and to have such, said by you is very special.

Regards, Todd

Trully amazing

Very impressive portofolio with excellent photos. Especially I like the street photography, each street photo tells a story. You have an excellent eye and your photos are simply amazing. Congrats !

Michael Taylor , April 26, 2007; 11:10 A.M.

Hi, Hugh. I've been watching your work for some time, now and just came back to see what's new. I appreciate very much your work, especially your personal, humanizing approach to street photography. I work on the front lines of the "social machine" (emergency department); it's good to see the respect you show for the people in your photos.

I hope you're not taking too long of a break from submitting; look forward to more.

Cheers from Ottawa.

Valerie Savoie , April 27, 2007; 01:05 P.M.

Respect

Hugh, I agree, your respect for the people in your pictures comes through. Very nice job, from the inside looking out. Valerie

Alfredo Muñoz de Oliveira , April 27, 2007; 06:32 P.M.

Hi Hugh

after reading your Bio, look to your portfolio I have to congratulate you for the great work bringing us the idea that photography is also a powerfull weapon to denounce, to tell the forgotten life stories where as you say in one of your photos.."money talks". Your street scene remembers me a black woman I saw in the 5th avenue, naked and with a transparent plastic around the body as she was crying and seamed that she wanted to suffocate....besides her...a mercedez bens...and someone entering in the expnesive shop...the world we are living. Photography is the life story of the present, past and our future. my best regards.

Alec Ee , May 15, 2007; 11:32 P.M.

Hello Hugh

What an incredible eye you have for humanity. Your albums are very impressive. I am just guessing, but you MUST have been displayed or recognized for your superior work. Thank you for commenting on my piece.

Rob Millett , July 02, 2007; 03:20 P.M.

I'm impressed mate, the way you seem to be in the right (for want of a better word) place at the right time so often, the quality of the shots and the thought behind each one; makes for pleasing viewing even if all the images aren't pleasant. Its nice to see some photos of home too, I've been away a while and miss the melancholy and bussle but also the character of London and you've put that foreward quite nicely.

Dennis Aubrey , August 24, 2007; 10:24 P.M.

Your folder "On the Street" ...

... is so very moving, Hugh. It is good to be reminded that there are higher purposes in our life than to gratfiy our own ambitions and egos. Your work is that reminder, and I thank you very much.

Steve P. , August 25, 2007; 07:39 P.M.

Thanks for the comment. Great portfolio. Your street photos are the images I want to capture. I hope, in time, to be half-as-good as you. cheers, stevo

Great!

Hi Hugh! I took a look at your portfolio and I must say that it's amazing! Great portraits, wonderful BWs but the shots I like the most are the street ones. Simply wonderful, I hope to learn something from your work... I add you in my favourites list, I'll be in London soon to take some shot and I'll surely be here again to see more... Congratulations!!

Brandon Lynskey , January 23, 2009; 01:09 P.M.

HUGHY

Hugh my buddy, I was just look at you photos again, after all those years! Even though you made them, they hold very much sentimental value, even for me. They really capture reality, incorperated with a little bit of love and irony. As well as incompitence, dismay, illusion and neglect. Idk. What can I say, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then each of your amazingly brilliant photos holds a stry behind it. Heck, I should know, you told me some of them! XD, man I miss you dude. I sent an email to the address I've had for a while. Please check it if possible, otherwise message me back!

Your old friend,

Brandon
