Excellent collection of portraits!!

'k was van plan om even wat van je werk te bekijken, echter er was zoveel moois te zien dat ik er een commentaar op je portfolio van maak. Je portretten zijn mooi, bijzonder en eigen, maar je stapt ook moeiteloos het Toscaanse land in om er een schitterende serie neer te zetten.

Vooral je portrettengallerij is heel bijzonder. Volgens mij is portretten maken een van de moeilijkste dingen in fotoland. En jij draait je hand er niet voor om, zo lijkt het. Mooie mensen op mooie foto's!

Ken, not a single camera, the portraits are made with a mamiya C-330 (sold in bad times), a pentax 67 (borowed) and recently I bought myself an old Hasselblad with 80 and 150mm lens.

I love: At the public bath.Whish that I hade youre curage to do something like that.

Your portraits are wonderful, and I am going to assume that you like to capture a plain even look--and I like this too. But, in my view, too many of your subjects seem to be aware of the camera so the full spirit somehow doesn't come all the way through. You are way better at this than I am, so if you do not agree, I would like to know how you see it. Thanks.

Hope you are working commercially AND have a good agent - some of your portraits are exceptional. You should think about poducing a book and photographing some celebs to ensure its success.

Thank you for the attention and the comments on my pictures.

Graham I collect faces, nothing more or less. Some are people I know, and a lot of them just people passing by. No professional models here and yes they are aware of the camera. I try to catch them in a relaxt moment. In most cases looking away would give a forced look imo.

Anthony no commercial work or agent, it is still a hobby. ( I have this silly tick, cannot walk through the city without looking at all these beautiful faces)

Of all of the portraitists that I've seen here, you are without a doubt one of my favorites. I love how, at your best, you are able to capture people as complex wholes... how you maybe seduce them or whatever into letting down their guards and revealing something of their true selves. It's as if you're walking a tightrope with them; click-click-clicking right as they subtly float across the line that separates the pathetically public from the genuinely private.

A wonderful collection! I enjoy every visit and never get bored. So many beautiful souls staring back, so alive, so calm. Thank you for sharing!

Personally I rather actually ask you few questions.I noticed that you use one light that is visible but really how many lights do you usually use. My other question is I am having a hard time in studio to keep the f stop high because of the lighting how do you keep such a nice depth of field.? maria@mariamanjelo.com please tell me. Your gallery looks as if they could be your best friends and most admired. Each person is represented with respect, and given honor by your work, with the result that makes me wish that I can know each of them personally. Craig, I've had a few exhibitions in my home town. After a sabathical period of some 10 years I picked up portraiture 2 years ago, for some reason I have this fascination for faces. I just keep collecting more, and whenever there is recognition this would be nice, but it remains a strange and rather time consuming hobby. Regards, Theo.

hi Theo I echo many of the thoughts above..beautifully,intriguing and direct. I noticed a question further up the chain relating to keeping depth of field to a minimum. Would you be kind enough to let me know how you generally achieve your results. Just one light/reflectors etc? I notice you used to use the Mamiya 330- I struggle getting sharp eye focus with such narrow DOF. thanks justin ..shuttertripping@yahoo.co.uk

4 jaar geleden alweer dat ik je portfolio heb becommentarieerd :-) Ik heb er van de week weer eens de tijd voor genomen, dit was ook wel nodig met zo'n 500 foto's, en me geen moment verveeld. Ik ben nog net zo onder de indruk als de vorige keer. Ondertussen al over digitaal aan het nadenken?
