Generaly I stay miles apart from Krishna devotees like you, but like to comment on your photography. I think that you have good skill whenever you went outside the typical religion/sprirtual documentary mode (e.g. your landscapes folder). Please explore West Bengal (outside Mayapur) - it's my home state where I spent first 23 years of my life - you will find so many excellent and interesting subjects for creative photography. Good luck

your potfolio is very much infomative and beautiful. i like the detail in which u go like doing puja by different flowers(narsimha deva) and respecting the sacred fire or different faces of krishna.and also the early morning 4.30am shots like meditation.your recording of mayapur life and landscapes(walking in mayapur).abstract folder and B&W folders are also of my like.
i learnt that vedic school in mayapur is going to do research with nasa.and nasa has granted funds for study and scientists are going to vist mayapur.
congrctulations:)

Dear Lila,
A very nice calm and cool portfolio you have. Really great one. I live in Kolkata and I have visited Mayapur three years back but havn't find that place as much good as it presented by you. Surely I will visit your place again after this puja to have (to try) some shots like you. your FACES OF THE LORD is my favorite. Thanks for sharing. Lastly one question, can I get permission to take photos inside the temple ? Just give me that answer.

Realization of the realization
I am, I am. I love your images in the "Children's" section and the section entitled "Narasimha Deva" which I believe refers the great Raja of Khurda that built many temples in India? You have a unique and enlightening opportunity to share your awakening experience with many people in the West. Many of these people do not understand the longing of their souls in the search for spiritual union/fulfillment. The children are the future and the measure of how your dharma has been manifest. When I see many of your images I realize there is still hope for the West and that the possibility of spiritual rebirth is only possible when people ultimately leave their religious (religion's) attachments behind. Ultimately we are of the same cosmos, and held in the same holy nam (vibration or word) which the holds the world... God Bless.

very good
Hi,
Your portfolio is very interesting. One can sense a calmness and happiness in the pictures.
I have to be honest in saying the I have heard some not very flattering things about ISKCON but your portfolio bring out the best side of Mayapur. I am Indian and grew up in a place not very far from Mayapur.
Look forward to more photos from you.

animals and plants
Hi V,
Thanks for visiting my portfolio and commenting on it.
I saw your portfolio on animals and plants of Mayapur. I saw that you have taken most of those animal and plant photos with a generic 50mm lens. I think that photographing animals requires some specialization of equipment - at least some sort of a telephoto lens. That will allow to shoot animals from further away, capture theire more natural behaviors, and also reduce sharp backgrounds that occur with a short lens and which distract from the main main animal in the photo who is the subject.
Anyway, I guess your specialization is in a form of street photography :). I have never really tried it myself , coz I don't have a very good eye for things that make good street photographs. Also I personally avoid the use of flash unless absolutely necessary.
Happy new year to you.

The Deities are mind blowing. So beautiful. I haven't been to Mayapura since 1985 and things have really happened since then. It looks brilliant, inspiring, wondrous and incredible. It always is, of course, but is now manifest to even the most jaundice afflicted eyes like mine. Feeling so much separation.

Just stunning, I think you capture the soul of your subjects more than the figure. When I saw your photos first thing that take my attention is your concern to the feelings in your photos.
It?s kind of rare. The technical side is great but the spiritual side if much greater.

Dear Lila Thank you for rating one of my photos . You have some fantastic photos where the everday life of city and spiritualy life merge in contemporary colorful expressions. From your portfolio I guess (I might be wrong of course) that you are not an expressionist true you capture the colors and the moments ...but in these moments your interest is the innerself the spirtual that you want to capture and portray in your photos. India is really beautiful I really wish to visit it one day. Congratualtions for your work .

a pleasure
its been a pleasure to browse through the images of mayapur.
the photographs are great visually, but what sets them apart is the emotions captured on most of them.
you have done a great job in capturing religon and its colors.
the only other comment i've though is however great the images, you might want to be selective about them too.

Dear Lila
Thanks for your visit again to my portfolio and your rewarding comments to it and to several of my photos. I can agree with your comment on my 'Grandfather'. The reason fot the grain that it's a photo, still taken with a traditional analogue camera and then scanned in with a Nikon slide scanner. The grain is that of a 400 ASA film. I have tried to reduce it, but then the image became too unsharp.
After my first visit and comment a few months ago I came back to your portfolio several times. I can only repeat my previous comment. It's a beautifull and mostly inspiring portfolio: beyond the photographic quality it's a moving tribute to India, its people and its culture. My preferences? There are several: Mayapur Life, Mother Cow, Children, Many people in one place, your festival pictures. But I don't want to diminuish the value of the others.
Those are all pictures which you only can make when you life there and are part of this society. As a tourist, we see only the external aspects of it.
We (with my wife) we have visited several years ago the North (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Khajuraho, Benares) and it remains one our most beautifull and rewarding travel experiences. Maybe I should scan in more over the pictues, taken then and post them on PN
We definitely will come back, e.g. to the South
Best regards
Jef

Keep the Faith
After seeing so many comments and critiques on your portfolio i think there`s nothing much left to say, specially in relation to your `photography`. Though going by your free flowing compostions, i personally believe that your images have more to do with faith & trust rather than just capturing them for the sake of photography.
Lila if you can catch hold of Neeraj Mahajan, Delhi based photographer, his series on `Bathing Festivals of India` is just Outstanding and reflects the power of faith to its maximum. I am sure you gonna love it!
Disillusion comes only to the illusioned. One cannot be disillusioned of what one never put faith in.
Regards
idris

If that's what you love ...That is great. (my girlfriend said to say that to you and it made sense) The passion which makes you happy is what all human beings should be seeking. It is no straight or easy path. I feel like I cannot give in so easily. I am a catholic by upbringing but a Buddhist by practice and belief. I feel that my job on earth is more that of a gate keeper rather than an enjoyer of surrenderings. I spent months in India with a Christian mission, I visited Kovalam, Bombay, Madras and Sri Lanka but I did not learn a thing because I was young and arrogant . I did work one month building a school but I was worthless..except for the humor factor...all the Indian people I met were just cracking up looking at me. I will try to be a good human and show others how to be happy but I will not stick them with any dogma except that of being truthful and decent. You have found emotional enlightenmnent. I wish I could let myself do that too. You are a lucky one. I cannot let myself be the lucky one as you. There is a task at hand. My favorite picture of yours is the young girl holding the calf. Your portfolio is enjoyable but can be oppresive too until you show wider perspective of your world like the scenery of the temple or the picture of a small but exquisite sloping roof site of worship. Mother earth is the one in trouble..mother earth AND the cows. Vegeterians vs cannibals have no impact on the fate of the earth, but intentions and spirit do. You know that, right?`

portfolios
Vrindavan, My grateful thanks for your input and comments on my portfolio. You are of course correct in your analysis. 50 years as a professional gives the portfolio a 'commercial' look because, by its very nature, the photography is controlled by the needs of the client and in my interest to make money to survive. To try to break 'the bonds' I wrote the book 'Experimental Photgraphy' to get away from the mundane and commercial..This in turn has its own problems,it goes outside the norm and stretches the imagination upsetting the 'purists' and of course getting it wrong in many cases.
I did produce another book on New York, purely black-and-white shots that was far away from my commercial world and most poeple agree this is my best work..I cannot for legal reasons put any shots on PN but if you go to my website :- johnwarrenphotography.com.....a few photographs are shown.
Your portfolio is by the way of the highest standard, colourful ,clean, tight and professional, congratulations, so keep working hard at it.......
For you interest my son, a professional musician runs a Jazz group
( devarecords.co.uk ) and is much influenced by Indian music. Two of his band members trained under Ravi and Neil Craig plays Tabla and Peter Mac Donald plays Mridungham..Give them a listen ...................and.............SMILE.... John

Thanks for commenting on my photograph. This was taken by my paternal grandfather around 1940. He worked for Conrinig Glass at the time and was involved with their publicity department as a photographer and artist. Corning was contracted to manufacture a 200" mirror for the worlds largest refracting telescope to be built in Mt. Palomar California. This telescope is still in use today. The picture you commented on was one of the final stages of the manufacturing process photographed by him as they were loading the packaged mirror on to a rail car. It was then shipped to California and Cal Tech university where the final polishing and aluminizing was done. Then it was installed in the cradle of the telescope.
I hope this give you an idea what this picture is all about.

Thanks for commenting on my image "Here Comes Josie To Save The Day..." I agree on the too much green thought. I have tried everything to tone down the green, nothing looks alright. I thought the composition might distract from the overly green look.

I'm so sorry you felt it was not nice for me to only THANK YOU for your comment on my work. If you notice the time I posted the comment is was a few minutes before midnight and I was shutting down my computer for the night. I saw you commented on my image so I wanted to thank you before I shut down. I was planning on taking the time tonight to really take a look at your work as I ALWAYS do when someone takes the time to look at my work. If you look at my comments in response to a rating or comment, I ALWAYS TAKE THE TIME TO JOURNEY THROUGH THEIR PORTFOLIO! I don't know what else to say other than it was a very disappointing e-mail I received from you and you made me feel as if I was self absorbed in my own work. I'm a VERY postive person therefore I'm going to excuse your less than polite e-mail.

Hello
After a long, long time I have come back to your portfolio. What I see here are the shots of not people but of their innermost souls. I would not like to comment on the technical aspects of your photos for two reasons; one, I am a beginner myself and two, your photos convey a feeling and touch the mind as many photos with the latest technical gizmos don't. I think you are a true devotee of the Lord and have been able to, through your work, give us a peep into your mind as well.
I have never visited Mayapur, but having seen the place through your photos, have a will to do so now. You have shown Mayapur as a "magical" place (as close a relevant translation as I can make now). Thank you so much for making my country your home and thank you for showing the world what a beautiful place it is.
It will be of immense pleasure if you visit my portfolio and have a look at what I have had to offer so far. As opposed to your one, mine is more materialistic but I have taken a few lessons from your photos and hopefully will infuse some more "life" into what I shoot from now on.

Hello Vrindavan , thank you for looking at my work and for your honest feedback. Your work specially the black and white series is beautiful and full of soul and spirituality . I find it difficult to talk about your work from a technical prespective since what jumps at me is the incredible and beautiful portrait of " being a person " that you have been able to convey in your photos . I will continue to look at your portfolio from time to time for inspiration and peace .

Hello Friend!
Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.
I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.
Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting

Wow!
I think that if I had visited your portfolio before coming across your photo "Srila Prabhupada in the temple room, Mayapur, 2007", I may have remained silent. You obviously have much more experience and skill than I. You have a marvelous and extensive portfolio; one could spend hours or days here.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my portfolio. I had never thought of my pictures as being "blue" but I do like polarized skies. I've worked harder on the recent uploads to get the color more to my liking, which often means reducing the saturation on blue and, especially, cyan. Again, thanks for taking the time to comment.

hare Krishna Lila,
I am very thankful to you for your kind and valuable and knowledgeable comments. I am agree with your point on framing 'coz so many senio/professional photographer noticed that. Actully I am beginner in this feild and have no idea if xyz looks good or not. secondly i saw this kind of framing somewhre and liked that and start doing this with my pictures. At that time i cant understand what is the purpose of framing and whats its meaning to pictures.
And i am very thankful to you that u told me about that and help me to improve my vision and sense of framing.
With blessing

Vrindava, You have a wonderful portfolio! You definetly are an accomplished documentary photographer, and just an all around excellent photographer. Your images really give a feeling of being present. Some of the shots look like paintings."Lord Narasimha celebration in Mayapur, May 2006." Very nice, although I don't understand the rituals, they kind of scare me. Anyhow, If you ever leave give me a call. John

Hare Krishna spiritual lady, this does happen after time to time, culture changes, economical changes, tochnological changes, so many changes does happen after time to time, place to place, from one to another. I do like the older culture of India, I am missing this soulfull culture now days, from India, and this is realy sad. finaly there is only one truth.... all over the world, some understand and many refuse... this time is known as 'KALYUGA'... End of the world..... New start takes place.... This is 'KALCHAKRA'... which keeps going....
