Andre,

Thank you very much for your message of encouragement concerning my b&w work. I see that you have a good eye in b&w yourself! I was a "Tonian" for five years. There's certainly a lot to photograph around there, and the Bay.

Even if I didn't like your photos (which I do), I'd have to express admiration for your equipment. TLRs (!) of makes I don't even know, and a Petri (I actually have one of these, though a different model). It's a refreshing change from the "I got more megapixels than you" culture on the Web. Nice to see the old beasts still active.

Doug Grosjean , January 31, 2006; 12:14 P.M.

Nice Shots!

The Ciro-Flex is very under-rated, IMO. I own a few of them, and have enjoyed them very much. Have even visited the factory in Delaware OH where they were built... Anyway, nice to see people using the old cameras well.

Oh, a Ciro-Flex was my introduction to MF photography. See:

Pat Hilander , February 16, 2006; 04:21 P.M.

Andre,

Thanks for taking the time to view and comment so many of my photos. I appreciate it! Keep loading those old cameras with black & white film and taking 'em out! I'll stop by here on a regular bases to see your new work.

Ted Carter , February 17, 2006; 11:25 A.M.

Andre - I love the DC for Bums series. It provides a very good contrast and "reality check" from all of the postcard pics you see of DC despite the fact that it has one of the highest crime rates of any city in the country. And, beyond that, the photos convey a sense of desperation and loss of faith. Great work!

Osvaldo Rima , February 19, 2006; 02:21 P.M.

Hi Andre, many thanks! Very good works in your portfolio.. Bravo See you Os

Thanks for the encouragement. Not much left to make photos of the strip anymore. I wish I had started my quest a few years ago. Oceanview is disapearing a little everyday.

An artist is defined by their work. Your work speaks in volumes about the type of artist you must be. Imaginative, original, deep, heartfelt and truly beautiful! Keep up the great work!

Erin Albertson , March 18, 2006; 12:04 A.M.

Your work is absolutely wonderful! I know you're fond of B&W, but your color is just as nice. I love your Virginia/S. Maryland folder & your 'Ship' shots. You definitely have the knack for getting the right shot. Brilliant... something to strive for. Thanks for sharing and the comments made on my portfolio.

Teresa Saska , March 21, 2006; 07:37 A.M.

Andre

Thanks for the really nice comments on my portfolio. Where did you get all those TLRs? I like your architectural shots, DC, God's country and the Chesapeake Bay folders especially. And all the ones from California. I was once a Long Beach bicyclist myself. If you can capture scenes people can relate to and remember they've been to, you've got them hooked.

Thierry Laflamme , March 22, 2006; 04:41 P.M.

Andre, your portfolio shows how much a human being can be different from others. YOU ARE THAT ONE and I admire your eccentricity. Also, because you're committed to work with film, it is another reason why I even more appreciate your work and its quality. Very nice pictures and pleasant visit! I encourage other members to come back as often as they can... Sincerely, Thierry

Tim Bowles , March 26, 2006; 11:20 A.M.

You have an excellent eye for shooting B&W and a great portfolio. Your pictures are a good learning tool for me trying to shoot in this format. Thanks for sharing.

Unique format B&W

Andre, Your b&w photos have a last-era feel to them, something you capture very well indeed. Thanks for sharing your work. -Bill.

john scheiber , March 31, 2006; 09:11 A.M.

Thanks Andre for your comment on my portfolio. I really enjoyed your portfolio especially DC. You love black and white like I do. Keep up the good work!

Jenny Darden , April 01, 2006; 09:36 A.M.

I had to visit to see what "bumbling" meant. I have to say, I am disappointed. These photos aren't "bumbling" at all! And I was hoping for some really bad art. ( ; I think you have a good documentary style, so black and white is an excellent choice for you. I really enjoyed several of your building photos, especially the one with the really dark shadows... I'll comment on the photo, as well, so you know which one I'm talking about. I also really like the photos of the sleeping ducks; they capture a very relaxed feel. My one suggestion is, one or two of the buildings look a little unintentionally flat due to the straight-on angle. Sometimes it's hard to catch a corner in the image, especially in a city shot where there are other objects to block the view. But don't be afraid to lie down, or hold the camera up over your head! People will look at you funny, but it's an easy way to add a little dimension. Best of luck, and thanks for visiting my gallery!

Joaquim Saial , April 07, 2006; 02:33 P.M.

Statues

Great portfolio! Nice pictures, specially those of statues. I'm Historian of Art and statues are my job. Thanks a lot for your two words in portuguese. Bye.

Greetings from Poland & (hope you don't mind) Happy ...Easter ;)

Erwin Frank-Schultz , April 18, 2006; 03:38 P.M.

Andre, the comment about film you left on my space led me to take a look at your portfolio. Wow, there are some stunning photographs here. BTW: Still using film, just not getting round to scanning and posting much, will do so

Todd Kowalski , April 21, 2006; 01:01 P.M.

Andre, you have a great amount of style and grace with your photography. I am always quite taken by those individuals that shoot primarily in B&W. You do quite well with it. I think that one must be able to SEE in black and white (figuratively speaking, of course), to do well with it. I believe that you have that ability, as you have pulled it off quite well. Your work is an inspiration to me and I shall visit it often to reassure how to shoot B&W with finesse. Regards to you Andre, Todd

David Meyer , April 22, 2006; 11:47 A.M.

Andre

Thank you for your generous (if perhaps undeserved) ratings and commentary on the portfolio. I enjoyed your photos of D.C. and the God's country most. I admire anyone who still has the patience (and time) to work in black and white. I assume you do your developing and printing yourself. For years I cursed the digital and even the color guys. But time has a way of making changes, and I discovered the ease of shooting digitally and not having to do the darkroom chemistry, etc., etc. So now I have pretty much given up on film in general, and B & W in particular. At any rate, you are to be commended for your staying the course. It is obvious that you are attracted to the old, abandoned and sometimes decaying remains of civilization. Hopefully you are not as obcessed with it as I. But those are your photos that I find most enjoyable. There are several very fine works there. You clearly understand tonality, composition and all of the technical aspects quite well. Keep up the good work.

Ricardo Gomez , April 25, 2006; 12:06 P.M.

You have really beautifull pictures in your portfolio. I'm not an expert in black & white but analyzing your pictures I can learn a lot. Thanks a lot and I'm waiting to see new photos

Andre your D.C. photos make the city come to life. Sorry I posted that pic on your site. I'm new to this and couldn't figure what (Disapprove) meant. I think I've corrected. Will look for more pics and maybe cross paths in the city. Chris

Nick Meertens , June 02, 2006; 04:11 P.M.

Andre

Your portfolio is really very enjoyable and personable. I like the way you (almost) consistently use B&W and and I LOVE the way you use all kinds of long forgotten camera's to make your pictures. You should organize a contest and let fellow PN members try and guess which camera you used for a particular photo! I look forward to seeing more of your work, thank you for sharing!

Doug Oldham , June 04, 2006; 08:40 A.M.

I love that you show two very different sides of D.C. Your portfolio has an interesting social commentary on top of just being beautiful.

Gary Eaton , June 07, 2006; 10:46 A.M.

Lusby

Hi Andre

I really like your Lusby collection. Less commercial looking than the others (good thing), and they have got texture and ambience, and the ones with the low camera angles on the machinery have a real sense of impending doom about them. Great that you are able to get emotions like this into photographs.

Francesco Tonini , June 10, 2006; 05:23 P.M.

PBY

Thanks for your 'historical' insight to the Catalina pic - your Dad is a lucky guy, the North Atlantic is pretty unforgiving at any season. Also, much appeciate your correction on the title - the original PBY pic was taken in such good light that the seascape used seemed about right. Most of my Atlantic seaas are dark/gloomy and didn't fit the PBY lighting. Thats my excuse anyway - will make sure that my background research is more rigorous in future - and will change the title! Liked your b/w pics, very atmospheric. Cheers, Pat

Raymond Elstad , June 12, 2006; 02:05 P.M.

You Are So Gracious!

Hello Andre, You are too kind in your comments on my work... Not that I mind... grin... You help make it all worth while. I've not given up b&w but have just been playing with my new toy. I'm currently building a darkroom and hope to have it finished within the month. I've not been that happy in the world of color and am looking forward to a return to silver. Cheers, Raymond

I'm very much a novice, just try to put my brain (mindseye) in the WLVF. One day I'll achieve ability to use shutterspeed/aperture to my benefit.

Beepy . , July 08, 2006; 08:17 P.M.

Hi Andre. Great urban landscape interpretations. The two DC portfolios - one for tourists one for bums - are brilliant juxtapositions. I think I tend to more the bum status myself - and never having lived there at most a vagrant (passed out in the quad at Georgetown looking for my friend who attended school there). The set of photos for tourist is interesting in the intense repetition of monuments - almost obsessive.

Mike Smith , July 17, 2006; 06:57 P.M.

....

I appreciate the willingness to look past our immediate conflict. I probably shot back a little harder than I should have. I can't say my photo embodied exactly what I intended to communicate, it was just a cheap and fast way to get in the general direction of what I wanted to do. So, some of the negative reactions are just due to my lack of care taken in the delivery. If I'm going to anger people, I better be able to stand firmly behind it. I figured I'd get some bad reaction, but I kind of thought it was a generic and trite enough of an image that people would just think it was amateurish.

I posted a long response to the lady who commented last after you. It lays out more of my opinion on the issue if your interested.

What I would actually like to be able to do with my photography is to get people to consider things they hadn't before. The photos I currently have are far too blunt, people are immediatly upset by it, so it will never make anyone consider the idea behind it. I did change the title of the photo, because I didn't put much thought into the first one.

Mike

Your still life series is really timeless. Ordinary everyday items on the floor, natural light - all very "zen" in their own way. I can look at these for ages for some reason. Truly enjoyable.

Kellen Sobiech , July 31, 2006; 03:53 P.M.

ANDRE! YOUR PHOTOS ROCK!

Thank you for stopping by and viewing my floral work, you are a genius of the play between shadow and highlight and all of the gray area in between. Let's see some color! Saturate! Just For fun!

BTW-I don't even have Photoshop ( I use Picassa) but I know what you mean about turning down the volume & I will keep your advice in mind.

Brian Kravets , August 12, 2006; 01:26 A.M.

Wow, what a great porfolio! I like your dedication to B&W. You handle the contrast between sun and shadow very well.

And I'm glad my photo of a tractor could remind you of your wonderful days working in the sun! Not enough kids from my generation will ever know the kind of hard work you experienced.

An amazing portfolio, even the one roll of color film. Having lived in NoVA for a bit, I'd no idea how much there was I never even knew to go see. Really nice work here, I've learned a few new things about composition especially of wooded areas. Thanks for the effort in posting such a huge number of images. I've no idea why you'd remark on one of mine that it would remind you of something Andre Keretsz would've done, I'm more than a bit flattered. Thank you for taking the time to offer those words of encouragement, they mean quite a bit to a beginner.

Bryan Riedford , September 11, 2006; 02:03 P.M.

Touche

On the black and white work. Liked the folder "Washington DC for Bums, Drunks, Crack Dealers, US Senators and other Vagrants". Also the folder "Fortress". Plus a ton of the various shots too. Great work...you don't need color. bryan

Nathan Ross , September 12, 2006; 06:49 P.M.

Andre,

Thanks so much for the constructive comments you leave regularly in my portfolio. They are very much appreciated.

You've got a lot of fine images in this folio, especially when looked at as part of series. I especially like the Destruction and Still Life sets. My only comment is that there isn't enough saturated colours or nude girls (just joking).

Ovidiu-Cristian Cojocarita , September 13, 2006; 03:36 A.M.

Honoured...

Thanks you very much for your comment on my portfolio, it is a honour for me to take a comment from a photographic artist like you. It is easy to see the world in colors, because the world is in colors, but the difficult one is to see the matter, the environment , the faces, the sky , the children and anything in a Black and White dream. We are not photographers I believe, we are dreamers, we see a dream of the world in Black and White while we are awake.Thats the matter, and thats the art.Thank you. E.E.

Yeap, Andre,

I fully agree with you. It takes a bunch of ruthless, brainless, heartless and a few more ~esses people to attack Cuca. But the good news is that it is back in full swing.

Loved your photos, I shall be back often.

All the best, have a great 2007

Peter Galuszewski , January 09, 2007; 10:28 P.M.

This is a treasure trove! I would love to see how these look in print, without the soul-sucking computers, scanners and monitors getting in the way! Even so, I spend a long time pouring over your pictures, and they really strike a chord with me! Yes, I was attracted to the airplane stuff, but was really blown away with the still life at the top - great stuff. Also, I absolutely love the picture of the lady wrapped in the blanket! Great stuuf, I am glad I looked.

Hello, Andre

thank you for visiting my portfolio. Yours is quite impressive! Although I don't do b & w photography, I've always had a special place in my heart for it. You master it so well! My favourite series is that of the flower pots.

Have a beautiful day, Madalina

I too remember those twin knob radios! Thanks for your comments on the picture it was designed to make people smile. I am glad it did.

I love your portfolio and will return to look in more detail. Apart from the pleasure the pictures give I suspect you have a wonderful archive of pictures of places and things that will be lost to newrgenerations. I hope the work will be preserved.

Hi Andre !

You have a really interesting portfolio here, which gives an interesting view of America, especially to a foreigner.

I think your Still Life and Botanical Portraiture is wonderful - you play with light very well.

Hey Andre,

Thanks for welcoming me and commenting on my portfolio. I didn't realize that page was there. I enjoyed looking at all of your East Coast pictures, since I was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and my relatives live on Long Island.

Missed you on photo.net

Andre, After a sabbatical from photo.net, I dropped back in for a look, loaded a couple of photos, and looked for some recent stuff. I saw your comments about top-40 radio (which I really used to like as a teenager). I hope you continue to drop in on photo.net and offer encouragement and advice.

Best, Denis

Michael Taylor , May 01, 2007; 04:54 P.M.

I'm well impressed by your portfolio and by your tools... So, over the last couple of days, I've been exploring the portfolios that you have commented upon. You've turned out to be a valuable resource for finding excellent photographers on PNet (which can sometimes seem to be too vast). Thanks.

I have to add that you also seem to take your participation very seriously and you have left some of the most specifically constructive and encouraging commentaries that I've seen to date on PN. Cheers.

Hamada Bourini , May 02, 2007; 07:49 P.M.

WOW what a beautiful B&W portfolio. Really starting to take an interest in B&W

Archaeo Images , May 09, 2007; 07:41 A.M.

You are right, shouldn't have been surprised...

Like the portfolio & impressed by the kit you're using. It's nearly enough to make me sell my DSLR, but it's 3 years old & only worth a couple of quid... :-)

Hi Andre .................. once again, many thanks for supporting my work, especially the new works I have recently posted, which I believe to be my strongest yet. Loved looking at your work again, regards.

Andre, thank you for your many kind words and helpful critiques on my pictures. They are very much appreciated.

Derron Yuhara , May 28, 2007; 05:32 P.M.

I took that picture about a year ago, im not sure if they tore it down since then. But its a pretty neat place to take pictures. There is a rumor that there is a darkroom somewhere in there. You can go inside most of the buildings too, kinda spooky.

It appears you love the bw traditional stuff. You should go there sometime if you can, tons of great shapes and textures. And its really close to the famous point lobos edward weston beach.

Talent indeed!

Yes Andre! You are a master at what you do. A true artist indeed. Judging by your self portrait, you don't seem to take life too seriously but you certainly do when it comes to creating images. You are a talent indeed.(Did I use the word 'indeed' too much?)

Kyle Shortes , June 17, 2007; 12:22 A.M.

Welllll

Andre ol' buddy, I wont be using PN much longer simply because I cant upload anymore photos and I cant swing the price-per-month, BUT! There is hope. I have a myspace (dun dun dun) myspace.com/shortesphoto make an account and check my photos out there! I havent put much up, but its a work in progress. Hope to see more work from your genius eye!

Tim Bowles , June 20, 2007; 12:49 P.M.

Thanks for your comments Andre. I've always enjoyed your work. I love the contemplative nature of LF, especially still lifes (never thought I'd be interested in *those*!), where you can really sit and think about what you want to portray with no worry about changing light. We're a small group it seems- people think I'm weird.

Giuliano Boiti , June 21, 2007; 05:22 A.M.

HP5

Hi again. I saw you commented on my crumbling building photo. I do indeed think HP5 is the best for capturing contrast in those type of shots. I made the mistake of printing it on glossy instead of pearl though. Pearl tends to make my building photos pop.

Anyway, thanks for the comment. I am glad to see people appreciate black and white photography.

Charles Heckel , April 01, 2009; 05:53 P.M.

Your still lifes and landscapes are very disciplined and thoughtfully organized, with the feeling that each element and indeed each tonality is a part of your intention. Your photographs of people are free by contrast, and your subjects show that you accept them as they are. A significant motif you don't pursue much is motion. Time spent capturing moments transfers to pictures of the timeless in interesting and unexpected ways.

Andrew Mackin , April 14, 2009; 06:24 A.M.
