Alexandre Guerra , October 13, 2005; 05:44 A.M.

Birte, I'm amazed with so many oustanding nature photos displayed in your portfolio. You are very lucky to live in Australia with all that spectacular natural environment and mother nature is lucky to have you there registering it in your photos. I'm sure that anyone who takes a look to some of your photos would start paying more attention to the treasures that surround us. Thus your work is by itself a very good means to protect them and to awake consciences to men's self indulgency. Warm regards, Alex

Hello Birte, i don't leave many comments on portfolios, but i've been checking your about once every 2 days for months now. So, adding my 2 cents here is really the least i can do. Let it be said loud and clear : your portfolio is a must-see. I appreciate your skills for photo (macro and animal photo of course, but not only), i appreciate your concern about environment, i appreciate you leaving nice comments on my own pics...and i appreciate the huge variety of tropical bugs you show, mostly to make me jealous (well, maybe not MOSTLY, but i'm sure you like to make me jealous !). You are one of the few reasons i keep on coming on PN with pleasure. Don't change anything !

Vincent Leong , December 06, 2005; 08:23 A.M.

Great portfolio of natural beauty. Collection is so large and amazing. It's good to see that nowadays somebody really cares about nature.

Birte Ragland , December 21, 2005; 04:49 P.M.

Thanks very much for all the nice comments, and Aviar I have worked all my long life in conservation and am still doing it, but its an uphill battle, hopefully the more we show people the more they will want to conserve it.

Nick Meertens , December 23, 2005; 03:22 A.M.

Keep showing off nature like this and one day soldiers will be gardeners!

David Keatley , December 27, 2005; 06:21 P.M.

for the comment on my page I do appreciate it. You think I was joking when i said I was a beginner, just look at the quality of photographs here and then look at mine again. there is no comparison between the two, I am a beginner, you are a professional. I wish I could take photos like these, it would make me very happy. dave

Davide Tizzoni , December 28, 2005; 06:54 A.M.

Thanks for comment at my portfolio. Your nature photos are great....excellent work, compliments!!

Cory Neidig , December 30, 2005; 03:22 P.M.

Hey Birte! Thank you for the wonderful comment on my portfolio. Your words are very inspiring and I completely agree with you on folks needing to realize the value of the places and things that this natural world is handing to us... there still seems to be only a handful of people who understand the value of it all. anyway, thanks again for your comments, your work and your words have given me a confidence and a desire o keep on shootin'. Happy New Year my friend.

Kenneth Fugate , December 31, 2005; 02:42 P.M.

Leon Desrocher

Birte. I love your portfolio. Your biography is right on. Don't change a word. You are 100% correct. The only thing that will save this earth is nature itself. Humans will destroy everything that is put in front of them. But remember that they too are part of nature. Just another species put here to participate in natures quest for evolution. Trust that nature will take care of itself and this world. Like the mice that jump off the cliff. Humans will play their part, sadly enough. Keep those photographs coming. Maybe some humans will learn from your work. A picture paints a thousand words. Happy New Year.

Chuck Babbitt , January 02, 2006; 02:17 A.M.

Wow. What a treasure I just found. Incredible work and your passion flows from that entire portfolio. Keep it up.

Justin Kerr , January 05, 2006; 04:44 P.M.

Great Portfolio

Birte, I must say that you have an amazing portfolio. I'm curious though as to what lenses and equipment you use in your photography, and where the photos are taken. Keep up the great work.

Birte Ragland , January 05, 2006; 06:04 P.M.

Thanks all.Justin I have worked with three cameras, some in my portfolio are taken with a cheap 3.1mgp camera ( the first one I had when I started two years ago)the second camera was the sony cybershot(the Borneo shots were done with that one and also some of my bird shots) I am now using the Cannon D20 with the Tamron 180 lens, the cannon 100-400 lens and the cannon 65 mm lens.I liked the cybershot but found it too restrictive when doing macro insect shots which is what I am interested in.Most of my photographs were taken along the east coast of Australia.

Daniel Rice , January 07, 2006; 03:48 P.M.

Burneo, Frog, & Butterfly folders

Are superior! Your people folders - the B&W & color Burneo - have some really great portraits. Each folder folder is full of very nice pics. Love the frogs and butterflies though as they are subjects I like too! Keep up the spectacular work.

Imponerende arbejde!

Hej Birte...

Superlativerne staar naesten i koe for at beskrive dine flotte billeder.

Jonathan Sylvestre , January 15, 2006; 10:09 P.M.

Hallo Birte

Thank you for the nice comment on my portfolio! Visited you wonderfull gallery and I must say that I am impressed. You know what you are doing.

Cesar Fernandez , January 22, 2006; 02:32 A.M.

I just wanted to mention that your biography shows that you are "the best photographer there is". One that makes a difference, one that matters, and one that cares. They say that for a photographer to be really good at what he/she is doing, he/she needs to be truly passionate about it. Well, I need to say no more..... Most of your pictures are very good, others are average, and few are truly "masterpieces" in nature photography, in my opinion; but after reading your bio and your motivation, all I can say is that you are a true MASTER in Nature and all your pictures are invaluable art pieces simply because you have inspired so many into caring and hopefully protecting our fragile habitats. Certainly INSPIRATIONAL! Regards,

Cesar Fernandez

Randy Pease , February 03, 2006; 10:37 P.M.

Wow, I just realized that I have been studying your great portfilio for over two hours! So much wonderful work here. Not only is your portfolio very prolific and technically spectacular, but your pictures have something to say. From displaced frogs to displaced people, your collection of work eloquently delivers its social commentary. I think your photos of the Penan people are the most powerful and compelling work in your portfolio!

Best Regards!

Wonderful portfolyo,There are many excellant photos. Best regards

Juanma Mardones , February 04, 2006; 07:15 A.M.

Hi Birte, first thanks for your comments. I?m not from Costa Rica, I?m from Spain. The photos are from a trip of 21 days to Costa Rica. It?s a small country with inmense varity of fauna and flora and lots of NAtional Parks and nature reserves. You would really enjoyed there. Your portfolio is outstanding first for the number of photos and second for the quality of them. I?ll keep on visiting you. P.D.: Sorry, my English is not very good.

Jacques Henry , February 06, 2006; 12:01 A.M.

My young daughters and I admire your collection of bugs and insects. I am also amazed by the quality you obtain with the Sony cybershot DSC F-828.
I once hesitate to buy this camera for travelling as my Nikon F4 is a bit too heavy and Sony offered a view-finder that can be rotated... but I ignored all about the excellence of its macro ability. I might consider the investment... what would you recommend?

Birte Ragland , February 06, 2006; 05:42 A.M.

Thank you for your comment, but my macro shots at least3/4 of them were taken with the Cannon D20 and a cannon 65 mm macro lens + the tamron 180 macro lens.I do not like the cybershots macro capabilities. That is why I ended up buying the other camera.

Jacques Henry , February 06, 2006; 05:58 A.M.

Thanks for your detailled answer... I have heard about this magic Canon lens (a bit expensive thou since I don't have Canon body to plug it on!)

Birte Ragland , February 06, 2006; 06:32 A.M.

You are right, wait till you get the kids off your hands and then go on a SKI holiday.

Matthijs Jonker , February 07, 2006; 07:00 A.M.

Man, you sure know how to catch the 'small' animals of this world. What a great detail your shots have, truly amazing. Although some of your shots have scarily much detail (more than I would like to see!) Really good portfolio, but were you never bitten/poisoned/attacked by any of the creatures?

Birte Ragland , February 07, 2006; 02:05 P.M.

No I have never been bitten, poisonened.Humans are more dangerous than these beautiful creatures.

Kaushik Chatterjee , February 09, 2006; 02:20 P.M.

Hi Birte! Thank you for the review & comments on my porfolio! I really like your work...very diverse & interesting! The waterfall/beach picture was taken at Julia Peiffer State Park (Big Sir California) and the name of the waterfall is McWay Waterfall. Both the park and waterfall were named for conservation people!

Let's keep in touch...we both have similiar interests!

What an excellent gallery, full of life ! You have a fantastic "eye" for animal life, but I also enjiyed your people and landscape shots.

C. G. , March 17, 2006; 07:00 A.M.

You have an incredible portfolio of nature. Love so many of your pictures. Also thankful for your comments which you are not stingy with.

Tis a noble cause, one who stands up for nature. Unfortunately, too few people understand, or want to understand what we are doing to the environment. I'm a science teacher who has a love for ecology, I just hope I can incorporate my desire to keep natural places to those I influence. Though some of them cant see why I go outside, since Xbox exists.

Birte, I'm not going to repeat what your work is screaming: that you are a talented, creative and excellent photographer.

I want to tell you that I been moved also by the quote in your page and some of your comments about human being who are sometimes more dangerous than the animals we are killing.

I have the same feelings and I hope that the passion we put in our work, at least could show others how great and extraordinary is the world we are destroying.

I always love to find 6/6 or 7/7's on my ratings...but when I find out that a rating came from a fellow photographer that has the ability that you do it is most certintly a complement! What a beautiful portfolio. I love the conservation work you are doing. You have inspired me. Have a lovely day. ~Melody Owens

What they said...

Good evening Birte. What a wonderful collection you have created, something I'm sure you must be very proud of. I absolutely love it. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to view your spider pictures (due to my insane fear of them) however, I plan to work up to that. By the way, your biography captivated me. I believe I have found my mentor.

cyrus K , July 19, 2006; 08:47 A.M.

Dear Birte,

"ONLY WHEN THE LAST TREE HAS DIED AND THE LAST RIVER HAS BEEN POISONED;WHEN THERE ARE NO MORE FISH IN THE SEA OR BUTTERFLIES FLYING FREE; WILL PEOPLE THEN REALISE THAT THEY CANNOT EAT MONEY?????....The world we live in is a crazy disfunctional place being destroyed by our needs and greeds. When 4000 billion dollars a year is being spent on supplying weapons to countries throughout the world, it really makes me wonder how clever the human race is"

I had the extreme pleasure of reading your words of wisdom in your bio and feast on viewing your fine, fine collection of photos here. The trouble is, in the grand scheme of things, I don't think the human race will be anywhere as successful as some of the species you have photographed here and it seems like you already know the reason for that! Best regards.

Attilio Peschiera , July 19, 2006; 04:40 P.M.

Your pictures are just outstanding. Beautiful details and colors. Very very nice.

Louis Young , August 20, 2006; 03:29 P.M.

Birte, There are no words big enough to describe your portfolio. But I will say: IMPRESSIVE, UNBELIEVABLE, GREAT, OUTSTANDING, and I can go on and on.

We can feel (see) through your pictures your love for life (human and animal). What a beautiful collection of pictures. There are so many that I will have to come back often to view them all.

I've seen in your technical info that you worked with a Sony F828 and a Canon EOS 20D. I currently have a Sony DSC-F717 and would like to get a DSLR camera. I'm hesitating between the new Sony DSLR-A100 and the Canon EOS 30D. Do you have any words/suggestions for me. I would really appreciate and value your comments. Thanks in advance.

I've traced you from one of your comments on a tiger cub, jailed behind steel, probably in a zoo. It angers me tremendously, when I see that. I hate these disguting habits of modernity. Just let me hope and say that it's people like you who I'd like to think represents true humanity.

I am amazed at the sheer volume of images in your portfolio while maintaining quality, composition, subject matter and producing art. In the unfortunate event that a species dies, people will be able to come to your portfolio to see what they looked like! :)

What you have shown here is a life's work for most photographers.

Philip Turner , December 04, 2006; 04:51 A.M.

I am so glad you left a comment on my "Fall Seed Pods" image! You have a very beautiful, stunning and overwhelming body of photographic imagery. Puts my nature imagery to shame. Loved the bio/intro information you left and I really get the feeling that you are personally making a difference. Have you ever considered a non-profit foundation or trust for continuation of your amphibian breeding and care? Anything that helps insure continuation of so many endangered species seems like the right direction to be going in. Hope you'll be able to continue to photograph and propagate many of these threatened species. Selfishly I think we'll all be the the beneficiaries of such great work; artistically and spiritually. My heartfelt thanks to you for your continued good works.

John Warren , December 04, 2006; 08:26 A.M.

Hi Birte, Your bird photography is of the highest quality. I have now retired after 50 years in the profession and I would like to concentrate on birds for my own amusement without getting too serious. What do you use (your lens and camera) It would be useful...Kindest regards...John Warren

Honored with the direct rating from such a marvelous photographer.

Randy Heisch , December 19, 2006; 09:24 P.M.

Thank you for you encouraging comments; although after viewing your fantastic macro work, I believe I deserve the low ratings (I'm a newbie and don't often understand the ratings (seems there a those that plaster 3/3 just to "put you in your place to counter 6's or 7's) - maybe I'm over reacting).

But WOW, what a remarkably awesome, large body of work; you're an inspiration; I'll have to reserve a couple of hours or more to review and study your portfolio. Again, thanks for you comments.

Birte Ragland , December 28, 2006; 08:04 P.M.

This is not the first time this has happened, I have had many of my photos stolen on the net, so it does not surprise me.That particular photo was actually publicised quite widely and won numerous prizes.I do not even retain copyright on it anymore, so I had better remove it.I will let the parties who own it know of its location that you pointed out. Thanks for showing me.I am grateful that you let me know, and please don,t hesitate to point out others in the future to me.

John Warren , January 17, 2007; 08:24 A.M.

Birte.... Look at some of your best shots and note the 3 3 ratings..Who is putting them on the site and for what reason.....Have you a theory... John

Birte Ragland , January 17, 2007; 05:11 P.M.

No I don,t John, but by the time frame that I list them and recieve the 3/3,s I would think its coming from the US.I don,t know but it makes me laugh especially since a lot of them are published shots. But I have noticed that very good shots are getting ridiculous ratings and thats properly why a lot of photographers that used to list here are hardly doing so these days.I don,t think I will be renewing my subscibtion when the time comes around. The people running this site had better do something about it or it will end up a very mediocre site.I have heard that a lot from here have gone to photographyblog and other sites.

John Warren , January 18, 2007; 06:39 A.M.

Birte, You are right, a few weeks ago I tried an experiment. I put a shot on the site I produced in the seventies. It made almost every UK Photo magagazine because of its originality. The head of Kodak Professional Dept asked for the original and it is still on their boardroom wall.Within ten minutes of it being on the site it recieved two 3 3's. 24 hours later it had received five 6's and three 7's. After all these years I am immune to criticizm, but the up and coming young photographers take it very much to heart.... As you say the site owners should look into it because, at their peril, they will loose photographers of your outstanding ability. Kindest regards.... John

Rattings at photo.net

First of all I would like to say thanks Birte for your comments on one of my photos the Caligo butterfly. Second, visiting your portifolio I could admire your beautiful work, with so many beautiful photos, specially the birds, flowers and insects. Congratulations. Concerning the ratting system of photo.net I agree with you and John, I also can't understand why the administration of this site they don't do anything. All the time I post any photo, specially the best I consider for myself, the first ratting is 3. You can confirm what I am saying just checking the photo you rated as 6/6, the first rate was 3/3. Sometime ago, I did a comment at the forum that all the nudes receive above 5 and we try to get some beautiful photos and we get 3/3. I am also thinking seriously if I am going to renew my signature in the photo.net. My son gave up few years ago of posting in photo.net and has been frequently telling me to do the same. I will think about that. You are all right and something must be done. Cheers.

Thanks Birte for your comments on my portifolio. I agree completely with you. Something is wrong on photo.net with the ratting system.

Hi Birte, you've got a great portfolio, with really oustanding work. I've read your bio and I agree with you completely, and it's great that you show us all these beautiful animals to let us know what we've missed, and will be missing more still. I really hope more people will be aware of the how much damage we've given to this earth and that's its time to heal. Best regards, Terea!

Shaun Dicker , January 29, 2007; 12:42 P.M.

Thanks Birte...

I've visited some wonderful places, but you live on a different planet!!!

thanks, its a small word, but it means so many things!!

Micki F. , January 30, 2007; 06:06 P.M.

I like frogs... I loved your BIO!

I saw it about three weeks ago and didn't know where your were and have been searching till now... YEAH! I knew you did the dragonfly's and LOVE them too (I collect them). But I also LOVE frogs! I grew up knees in lakes and oceans all dirty noes with fish stink and love for frogs and such! I loved just watching nature and loved the way they just grew from something that swam to something that breathed air and hopped out of my hand. Self sufficiant. All on their own. I now (at almost 40) life in a house where I have great big frogs that come out after a rain and just make the most beautiful noise! I now have a chore. To get a picture of one! Ok... it might not be great but I will get one. I do LOVE your pictures of the dragonfly's I have NEVER seen anything better anywhere (I collect them). Your photography of animals is the best on PN! You capture the soul of the animal, insect, fish... frog ;) ~ thank you for sharing! ~ micki

JF Ochoa , January 30, 2007; 11:02 P.M.

Hi Birte! I just want to say you... thank you... for sharing your work, your vision and your love for this beautiful world. Greetings from Mexico!

Bjørn-Tore Rekve Seim , February 01, 2007; 12:55 P.M.

To be honest I'm really impressed by your huge portfolio with so many exquisite quality photos. The variety of species you have managed to capture is not less imressive, and at last, but not at least, your filosophy and thoughts about our planet earth and the way we keep destroying it, couldn't have been put forward more correctly by anyone. It's a sad fact that we literally have to rush in order to experience many of the fantastic species of our planet before they become totally extincted. This due to the ongoing stupidness and lack of understanding which mankind so often have shown. In this context I'm not prowd to say that I'm belonging to the species Homo sapiens!

Best Regards

PS! By the way your name has a certain Scandinavian sound to it :)

Denise L , February 03, 2007; 11:57 A.M.

Birte, your photographs are all stunning and masterfully done. They honor the beauty of nature. I've read many of the comments you've received and agree with all the praises and the frustration with the rating system. I'm a new photographer and a 3/3 with no comment or critique is in no way helpful or encouraging. If you leave this site it will be a great loss. Regards. Denise

Hi Birte, I really love your work. If I recall correctly, you went on vacation a while back and when you came back it was with a bit of a vengeance (I mean that in the best way). While I love birds, it is your tigers that really caught my fancy. Thank you for sharing.

Ratings & Views

Hi Birte....... Have you noticed that something else is now going on with the site... My first 20 odd shots received viewings of between 2,336 & 13,592. The latest shots, same sort of quality received ratings of between 54 & 269 viewings. Why suddenly the large discrepency? Any ideas or am I being paranoid......Regards John

Hi Birte, I'm glad it is not me,maybe it is a good thing that fewer people are on the site, they could be a bit more discerning. Glad you are getting published, and quite rightly so........A tip...keep an eye on your publisher..publishers are notoriously mean, so don't get in a position (and this is from bitter experience)wherebye if they say they will give you a royalty statement once every three months, keep them to it. Don't be afraid to get onto them IMMEDIATLY and get the cheque, Do not leave it.If necessary ring the accounts dept regularly and do not be frightened to upset them. They need you more than you need them........Keep working.......John

I love visiting your portfolio, absolutely amazing, awe-inspiring and beautifull.

Hi Birte, I am back again to talk about the photo.net system (rattings, views and etc.). Now I would like to share my comments with John Warren about the views. I agree with him that something very streng is occuring with the ratting systems and viewing system. I am member of photo.net since 2003. My photos never got high numbers of viewing. I would say something around 10,000 for the best ones or something more, but in few days the number of views grew up very fast. Now, something intrigues me. Some days ago I post a photo, (http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?topic_id=1481&msg_id=00Jw1s&photo_id=5593264&photo_sel_index=0) and the ratting is good, something like 5.3 and 5.4, but the number of views is very small (107). It is occurring with most of my photos. Almost all of my photos start with 3/3 at the ratting and in the next day, I can see associated members ratting with 5/5, 6/6/ even 7/7. Something wrong with that. Strange. Next month I need to renew my signature. I need to start thinking about that. Nobody give us any explanation for this type of things. I know what happened with you. The same. Excellent photos that you have already published them in books, you got 3/3. I would like to share my complains in your portifolio because I know that you also think as me, considering this strange things that is happing in photo.net. Now John Warren is join us with another comment that I was also intriguing me. Sorry for using your portifolio to say this things but we need to do something. I got a lot of friends here since 2003, I enjoyed been a member of photo.net, but things like these are not good for ourselves. Your portifolio is spectacular. I appreciate vey much your nature photos. Cheers.

Birte Ragland , February 25, 2007; 01:23 A.M.

Thanks for the comment, I cannot figure out what is happening, I had to renew my subscription, I did it only because I can list a large number of photos and my publisher usually checks what I put on.The photos I have been putting on lately are only getting between 200-300 looks which seems strange because they are getting okay ratings. Now they have changed the whole look of PN but it does not seem that they have done anything about the rating system and that seems odd.I do know one thing though that you do get a lot of exposure being on the site, another thing that seems odd to me is how you can have 40 million hits on your photographs in one year and get so many low ratings, thats what has happened to me in the last year.

Birte, The professor has twigged it, what is to be done ? The whole thing is now becoming farcical. I just hope a manager or someone senior who owns the site, has picked up on our complaints, gets in touch and then justify the way the site is now being run........... By the way I am on my way to Oz next week.. Tips on what to photograph avoiding the cliches would be welcome...John

Tony Casu , March 02, 2007; 12:14 A.M.

Birte, I am in awe of your photos, in particular with the message you are giving. I totally agree with your biography. I am a wildlife Biologist and have worked in many remote locations where you can still see human intervention and garbage. I find it discouraging sometimes, but every day i try to educate myself and others about the environment. I currently raise goats and am trying to expand to organic practice as well as raising animals with respect of their individuality. People think that animals and plants are disposable that they can be grown like factory products, but what we do to them we already do to ourselves, just look how little regard our society has for children and elderly people. And we are suposed to be civilized. God help us.

I am aware of your frustrations with the discourteous people on this site and I see you have deleted a photo because of it. I hope that you sent a complaint to the moderators of the forum as the person that was discourteous had no photos posted himself. I also checked every search engine to see if I could find him anywhere and he is nowhere to be found. I have often passed by your photos without a comment or rating as I felt intimidated and not nearly proficient enough to share anything of value for you. You are a highly talented and professional photographer, with nothing but the highest quality photos to share with us. I decided that now I had better share my views with you, as I am discouraged that you would even entertain leaving PN. Would PN rather have a discourteous egotistical troll that spews garbage words and posts no photos, or you? My vote is for YOU! Keep posting Birte, please - you can not only make the world better, you can make PN better.

Hi Birte, I'm part of the "Matrix", the matrix who feel free to give you a good rating and knows how difficult is to take good pictures of animals. Also the matrix who put pictures on this site and ask for critiques and ratings and do not hide himself behind a mountain of stupid words without showing anithing to the others. Like Jan I checked if those arrogants have some wonderful works somewhere on this site or somewhere else on internet, but there is nothing. Your work helped me to improve mine, and I'm sure many others can tell you the same on this site. Best regards. Stefano

Birte, you surprised me with your portofolio and especially your way of thinking ! CAN WE EAT MONEY ? Of course NOT. But we still are keeping eating ourselves by destroying nature, our home ! And this is the great message your photos give us: HOLD ON AND JUST LOOK AROUND ! Look at birds, trees, animals (including miserable human beings) and so on. This is ALL WE GOT, AND WE ARE DESTROYING IT. Birte I want to know more about you. Thank you for rating my photos.

Hi Birte, I agree, it is getting tiresome, I promised myself I would not get irritated by the 3/3 idiots but I notice it is getting out of hand.Every shot that goes on the site now gets at least one 3/3 no matter how good or bad and of course it is a deliberate action just to bring the average down. I did get hold of one of PN's staff responsible for ratings and he did not have the good grace to reply. When you leave let me know where you are going and I will follow............Your new work by the way is maintaining your high standards, congratulations ......John

Antonio Da Re , April 28, 2007; 06:38 P.M.

Thanks for your evaluation and much appeciated comment.

Bert Reitter , April 28, 2007; 09:12 P.M.

Your entire portfolio makes my mouth water. It is simply beautiful. I cannot possibly comment on any individual shot, although I have studied your collection carefully. Everytime I decided to say something specific about "this" picture, I had to ask: "..and why not about that one there? So I gave up and restrict myself to simply saying: "What a lovely job!" Bert

Marcelo Albuquerque , April 30, 2007; 03:46 P.M.

Your portfolio is very impressive. I love your wildlife shots. I have a feeling I will be spending lots of time here going over each of your photos in more details. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my photo. Congrats for the beautiful work. Regards, Marcelo.

Dale L , May 02, 2007; 10:54 A.M.

Fantastic images in every major category - great job.

John Warren , May 04, 2007; 11:27 A.M.

Hi Birte, Your threat to leave and mine to follow has set off a chain of events with members asking us to stay (see my bluebell site).......How can we get through to the 'powers that be' that the ratings nonsense needs changing ? I thought I had got through to one PN Exec, however, he did not reply to my query, Any suggestions? John

Lee Jianmin , May 05, 2007; 09:33 P.M.

Hi Birte, What a lovely tour browsing your portfolio. I see curiosity, search for the right angle, the intuition that makes the shot special and love for the art. All enjoyable folders; recent photos especially well done and original. Best Regards.

Bert Reitter , May 06, 2007; 07:41 A.M.

Hi Birte

I have just browsed your portfolio again. What a wonderful study of "colour and motion"... your work is beyond criticism...Bert

Cedrico Fernandez , May 08, 2007; 11:02 A.M.

.. behind those photos are strong messeges, a loud crusade to save nature's beauty and purpose. Well represented by those photos to a great extend. Really, there's an amazing amount of work and patience involved. What a portfolio !!

John Warren , May 10, 2007; 08:02 A.M.

Hi Birte, I have fired off one last missive at the site management,I doubt if it will make any difference, they seem set on the anonymous rating system....so be it....... If and when you move please let me know and I will come with you: nature photography is a bit narrow for me but I might be able to contribute......SMILE.......John

roger sonneland , May 12, 2007; 08:16 P.M.

Hello Berte

Hi there, let me start by saying i found your bio very interesting. always gives me hope when i meet people who are actively trying to do something to save our planet. now on to your portfolio. what a pleasnt surprise that was. flowers are my passion which I was not let down on , but ohhhh there is so much more in this portfolio of yours. some very nice work indeed. I am new here to photo.net and have read the dicussions about the rateing system on your add a comment section. i also have a hard time understanding some of the numbers that turn up. i have taken so many images over the years and our small image company depends on me selecting the right images that will sell to survive. guess what i am trying to say here is you sound like you have been around for a while and am sure you yourself know when you have created a good image, the rateing system they use is just numbers and in my way of thinking it would be a real pity for the other members of this site if you pulled out. i have gone on and on here , sorry for that. i really did enjoy looking at your work..................fantastic!

roger sonneland , May 12, 2007; 08:19 P.M.

hello again

sorry for spelling your name wrong.........roger

Bert Reitter , May 18, 2007; 06:02 P.M.

Hi Birte

It's me again, Bert...Photography to me is not just a well exposed, well lit, well focused image, although it is all of that, but it carries, or does not carry, an emotional punch. I can admire a picture of a wide ocean meeting the horizon. The colour and motion of the water, some clouds in the sky can have an emotional impact. I also love to see colourful birds, or frogs or beetles, although the emotional impact there lies more in my knowledge of how precarious their existance has become. Your latest b&w people shots disturb me to an extent, that I do not even want to look at them any more. Photographically they demonstrate your skill, of course, but I find them emotionally disturbing...and, believe it or not, I am a pretty level headed guy. So please return to colours, return to things I can deal with. Having said all that, let me add this: Your portfolio is absolutely first rate....Bert

roger sonneland , May 22, 2007; 06:48 A.M.

hello birte

The nude you commented on, infact all my nudes are from many years a go.I was into nude potography in a big way back in the early 7o's. The few images I have in my portfolio I used some of them in a exhibition I had last year spread in amongst the flowers that I do today. I have a you tube site for you to look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsuDDJ91VfA . This happened here in January and happens rather often. Anyway hope you enjoy it and that it brings a smile to your face.

cheers roger

New to photography??? Your portfolio is immense and the nature shots are great!!!

Bert Reitter , May 24, 2007; 12:54 A.M.

Ruud Albers

Hi Birte, I saw your comment and that of many others regarding some of Ruud's work. I like his portfolio very much, but I am astonished that only one person commented on the fact that several of his images are mirror images cleverly put together. The Blue Car, the trays in the gift shop and the green wrapped building are clearly PSed together via mirror imaging. Ruud is a master of Photography and the PhotoShop....both artforms in their own right. But I have yet to see this method used in your portfolio....Greetings...Bert

Juan Carlos Vindas , May 25, 2007; 12:17 P.M.

Dear Birte

Hi Birte

May I ask you to view one of my pictures, recently cropped, called "ICE NINE"? I would value your opinion....Bert

Lavern Burk , May 28, 2007; 07:38 P.M.

Please Don't Leave

Birte, Please don't leave this site. Look at the comments on your portfolio. Your work speaks for itself much louder than the site moderators can. The hell with them!

Bert Reitter , May 29, 2007; 08:29 A.M.

Hi Birte

Thanks for your comments on "Ice Nine"..You are absolutely correct in your assessment. To answer your question: I do NOT use PS...Not because I object to its use philosophically, but because I don't yet know how. I will learn however...To date I am only using Picasa 2 which allows me to crop and make other small adjustments in lighting and other areas. Obviously it cannot be compared to PhotoShop. I have added my opinion in respect of your fight with PN.... Greetings from Toronto. Bert

Alan Sparks , June 13, 2007; 12:02 A.M.

Birte, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I love your gallery. Beautiful shots of nature. I envy your array of animals and insects to shoot. You do a wonderful job of bringing them to life in your photographs. Keep shooting and please don't leave the site. I agree with you about the sometimes inexplicable ratings but I guess we are stuck with it as the site owners don't seem to get it or don't care. Happy shooting and thanks for sharing your world with us.

Juan Carlos Vindas , June 18, 2007; 03:31 P.M.

Dear Birte, like I said before I was coming soon to see more of your work and here I am, but this time I have to tell you that after seen so much good work in this web page I have come to the conclusion that you are among my favorite photographers. Persons like you inspire me to keep going and get better, your subjects and well as the colors are outstanding, receive my best wishes and thank you so much for sharing your wonderful work! jc

Glauco Dattini , June 22, 2007; 08:18 A.M.

Alan Sparks , June 25, 2007; 10:52 P.M.

Hello Birte,

I was lookng through your photos again today and saw and felt your agitation with the 3/3 weenies and the site management that let's them rule the roost so to speak. I share your feelings. While my photos are not near your standard, I get irritated when I see 3/3's left on anyone's photo without the courtesy of a critique. I have pulled my photos before and swore never to return, but here I am. I'm now thinking along the lines of a protest. During a set 24 hour period, nobody posts or rates anything. Like you, I want to send a message, but I want to continue posting because for the most part I enjoy it. I don't garner near the circulation you do, so I cannot effectivly put the word out. Are you interested? If not, please don't feel any pressure. Just a thought.

Dimitris Vasiliou , June 27, 2007; 03:14 P.M.

Dear Birte

Thank you very much for naming the flower for me and now is not untitled any more...:) Your photos are excellent! Maybe you can publish a book or two with the material you have. Very few people hane your observation powers, the patience the skill and the talent to produce this material!!! Best wishes!

Bert Reitter , June 30, 2007; 10:16 P.M.

Hi Birte

As I have already stated elsewhere, I would offer my services as your camera carrier during your up-coming birding trip.... I have kept looking, but I do not remember any comment from you on the little series I have posted under the name "The staircase"... I would appreciate your comments...Bert

I have just stumbled across your portfolio. Thank you for this incredible wonderland you have created. I don't think I have ever viewed anything so comprehensive and exotic. Just magical.

Mark A. , September 03, 2007; 10:06 P.M.

Thank you for commenting on my portfolio. Contrary to what my bio states, I'm really not looking for the true meaning of life (that was something I wrote during a time of depression). When I look at my family and friends, my five beautiful collies, and the beauty that nature has to offer ... it makes me very aware of what is truly important.

Since I'm still on ancient dial-up, I've only had the opportunity to view your frogs folder. You do beautiful work ... and that's probably an understatement. Viewing photos such as yours gives me the incentive to work hard to improve mine. At 60 years old, I've been taking photos for a long time (haven't we all?) and it is only recently that I've become interested in taking something other than snapshots. I'm actually putting some thought into photography ... I have a lot to learn.

I read your bio and I agree with you 100%. I fear we won't wake up until it's too late ... if it isn't that already.

Cheryl Pempek , September 24, 2007; 07:32 P.M.

Thank you for commenting on my butterfly picture from Sept. 19th. I love it when nature poses for you for a split second so you can get a shot like this.

Your portfolio is amazing! I'm going to mark you as interesting and will follow your portfolio.

Cheryl :)

Andrew Campbell , September 24, 2007; 09:23 P.M.

Thanks for dropping by, Birte. I noticed that you have "Wrecked Earth" written on you recent images. It's so sad to witness all the changes that are happening to this planet. We had better enjoy it while it still lasts.

Best regards.

Thank you for looking at my photo...As I am new to the world of photography (as you can probably tell by simple portfolio)..I am not sure what you mean by "noise"..Unfortuntely that particular moose photo was taken with a point and shoot..I have recently upgraded to a Nikon D80...how do you get rid of 'noise'?

PS your portfolio is outta this world...I absolutely love your work...

Greetings from Canada!

Nassos Zambaras , October 22, 2007; 06:37 A.M.

Your portfolio is a hymn of praise to nature. I am honoured that you have found merit in one of my photos. Regards

Bert Reitter , October 23, 2007; 08:28 P.M.

Hi Birte

I understand your need for some "house keeping" within your portfolio. However, I am afraid that much good work had to bite the dust, or be transferred elsewhere. The new, smaller portfolio is a marvel of the best that photography of this genre has to offer. I will visit you often, as in the past....Bert

Hello Friend!

Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.

I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.

Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting

Hi Birte,

Thank you so much for your kind comment on my portfolio.

I found your page a while back, bookmarked it, and drop by on occasion. I strongly agree with the comments in your biography on the sad state of the environment and the culpability of human greed in putting it in that position. I love your photography, finding your wildlife shots inspirational and your portraiture unique and excellent as well.

Dear Birte, I have just found your Portfolio and have been moved to tears. I grew up during the 50's and 60's in Hong Kong from a privelaged back ground. Poverty was around every corner and it always touched something deep inside. My love for the animal kingdom began [in this lifetime] at a very early age and I was fortunate to be able to keep many different species of animals rescuing many from the markets. Your work is truly inspirational and I know I will gaze for many an hour at your photographs and be led on many different journeys. My sincere thanks for sharing your inspirational images. I wish to dedicate this frog photo to you. The world needs many more caring people like you.

Hi, Birte

Thanks for your kindly words and rating on my photo "all my best wishes". I look through your bio and portfolio. I like many of your photos . They are very beautiful, colorful and creative. I admire your efforts on comservation area. I think that human being are smart enough, but it's a pity that their desire and ambition are even more than their wisdom. Keep goning on your excellent works, and take care of yourself.!

Margo Wade , June 24, 2008; 10:41 P.M.

Hello Birte, thanks for the information on the lens you use for your wonderful bird images. I have an old Canon L series 100-300mm lens that I used to use with my Canon EOS 30. However, although it talks OK to the 20D that I bought in 2005, it just doesn't seem to give the same results. I have difficulty focusing it and its reaction time seems relatively slow. Maybe it just needs servicing but I just might ask Santa for a new lens for Christmas! :) Kind regards, Margo.

your folio

I do not not care for most of your portraits. They are unnatural. The rest of your folio is MARVELOUS!.....P.S. I think we already do not have frogs in Israel :-) .

We have commented each other`s photos every now and then, but somehow I have totally missed the inner soul of your portfolio. I just famiiliarized myself to your photographer`s bio-page and found out your commitment to nature preservation. Your images and the background commitment are really worth honoring. I have known for a long time about your great animal photos, but now I found also your touching portraits of the "little" people.

Sending my deepest respect to your photo art and to your mission, Alpo

Birte..you certainly are an inspiration. Through photos, you've motivated me to constantly search for insects..all of which are beautiful when their details appear in macro. There is so much truth in what you say in your bio..A combination of "intelligence" and greed make me fear that a solution to the earths problems will come to late. My best..Marjorie

Hello Birte...not only have you displayed many wonderful and beautifully executed photos here. You have also tried to make people aware of the rapid extinction of many endangered species. Your message is clear, I just hope you will be listened to, as many people think that, it's not their problem. But as you so cleverly pointed out, in your very thought provoking, and well written biography...In the end it wil be..."everybodys problem"!

Your work is outstanding and I enjoy seeing your portfolio!

Kombizz Kashani , April 06, 2009; 03:31 A.M.

CANON can, so you CAN!

I like your images, and also I love your Canon bodies, Canon lenses and your equipment. I usually do not look at the equipment of a photographer. I guess in your case, I was curious about your equipment. I noticed you have a good number of good bodies and lenses, and so on. I guess, whatsoever CANON CAN, you CAN !
I like your diversified images from your vast travelling experienes. It seems to me that somehow you portryed another version of your idea into your portrait images with the help of PS editing software. (Example: Afghanistan, Los Angeles, South East Asia, and India 2007)
Good luck with your next projects and NEW destination, i.e. Iran.

Bill Symmons , October 05, 2009; 07:30 A.M.

I am astounded by your portfolio. The comments already have used all the words, "amazing", "wonderful", astounding" etc. But the other thing I feel from your work is a true concern for the world and the people and animals in it, and your ability to express it in your work. With photography of this quality you will make a difference.

So superb and inspiring.

My humble compliments, Bill

Borneo, Fog, and other Diversions

Hi Birte,

I'm pretty sure you've commented on a photo or two of mine in the past, but thanks for stopping by again. I've certainly been to your gallery on numerous occasions. We seem to enjoy visiting (and care about) a lot of the same creatures. I didn't have any difficulty in Borneo with the fog. It was pretty dry when I was there in early September. Sumatra was another story, but not really with the fog, with the daily torrential downpours.

Theodore Mattas , October 21, 2009; 10:22 A.M.

What a joy to discover your portfolio and also realize that we share exactly the same beliefs regarding mankind and nature! I'm truly honored by your comments not only because your rich talent is more than obvious, but mainly cause you are a photographer with profound love and care for nature and it's creatures! Regards, your friend, Teo

Vincenzo Corbo , November 05, 2009; 04:42 P.M.

Hi Birte. I totally agree with the statement in your "biography". I really hope Man can eventually realize what is doing to Mother Earth (actually not too late) and changes his way of living. Everyone of us should do his own, though! Starting by me.

In any case you've an impressive portfolio: the portrait from the folder "Afghanistan" are simply masterpieces, but also the other folders are filled with colours and feelings and love to our World.

Thanks for sharing. Vincenzo

Thank you very much for your comment Birte. This is my first DSLR which I purchased at the end of March this year. It’s very intimidating for me to post pictures for an armature that had no clue about the camera & taking a proper picture, especially after viewing the magnificent pictures in your portfolio as well as others on photo.net. Studying your pictures will sure benefit my skills & confidence in future pictures.

Black Backgrounds

Birte, you're a great photographer and I admire and appreciate your dedication to conservation, I would urge you to reconsider your technique of creating fake black backgrounds for so many of your images, both people and wildlife.

First it takes the subject out of any context - is the animal in a zoo, in a game park, in a city park, or in deep wilderness? Does it live in the desert, snow, a river, in a tree? - second it creates an unnatural and unbelievable asthetic, and third it has create harsh looking results on many images, with an abrupt, blurry black outline around the subject. We all strive to have uncomplicated backgrounds, but I think you have taken it to such an extreme that it hurts a lot of your photos, and to be honest your overall body of work.

For a nature photographer documenting and sharing the natural world, it's not a natural or genuine approach. You could look to the portraits of Steve McCurry to see his masterful handling of pleasing backgrounds for portraits. For nature the simple fact is you can't always get the background you want. Let nature be. Hopefully you will see this as constructive criticism.

Hi Mam

Sorry Mam, today for the first time I have gone through your biodata ... great thoughts ... I saw your India category today ... welcome to Kolkata ... I will be there to assist you ...

Birte: I want to thank you for taking your time to look and comment on my photo “Not to close, close-up” coming from a person of your ability means a lot to me. Hopefully one day my skill level will be as yours is.

After reading your Biography I must agree with you, we are our own worst enemy. For a species that is so smart, we are the dumbest of all animals.

Thanks again

Hi Birte!

You have great portfolio! Best!!!

Kaereitaer (Käreitär in Finnish) is a figure from the Finnish mythology, not a fantasy of me. There are stories, poems concerning the birth of all the animals from the old times. They tell about the Mothers ( called Emuu in Finnish) of almost every species and how they created and gave birth to animals of their own. As Finns of today we (me and Anne) have taken the priviledge to create the physical figures for those Emuus. According to Anne´s poem Käreitär shaped the bones of a fox from her own pelvis and made the fur of the downy cotton grass, threw them to Fire and the Race of Red Fox was born. If you want to see more about issue, please visit our website www.cra-company.com, there is available a video in English about Käreitär. In the picture we used a skin and a skull of a fox (worked by Anne). There is more information about Käreitär at Finnish wiki, you can read it in English if you have a translation program. Thank you all! Best wishes Anne & Ilkka

You have a truly amazing portfolio. All the best.

Ananda Chaudhuri , March 18, 2011; 01:56 A.M.

It is really to express what I want to say about this portfolio....so I will just say this portfolio shows us what tremendous power a still shot can have. Several shots stand out...the expression in the eyes...leave no doubt about the stories

Steve McCurry photographed an Afghan girl which became an icon, this allbum deserves no less.

Each one has the power to change our world - to move us to act to stop violence that claims innocent lives

Engela Vermeulen , June 09, 2011; 08:04 A.M.

Hallo Birte,

You have one of the most wonderful portfolios on PN!  Such a variety is quite hard to find with most other photographers.  Lovely work, Children of a Lesser God being my favorite.

Kind regards,

Engela Vermeulen
