Boring???

David, the composition of key elements in your photography is masterful. Keep up the great work!

David Roossien , December 01, 2003; 09:19 A.M.

Hey you guys. I didn't know you could leave comments over here. Yeah, some of my stuff IS boring, but I'm still learning and maybe it will get better. Once I get the basics down I can focus on becoming more creative!

Hanna Cowpe , December 01, 2003; 06:57 P.M.

My mother always used to say "things aren't boring; only people are" ;~}

Hugh Hill , December 14, 2003; 06:16 A.M.

David, you should know your work is good, in fact quite a lot of it is in my opinion excellent, when our work is attacked by others for no apparent reason by some who's only motive appears to be a difference in taste should be taken with a pinch of salt. Vivian, if you should read this you should be ashamed for making such a statement without justifying your reasons for you only have to glance at some of these images to realise the skill & passion of this man.

Would be very happy if you could continue to drop any tips my way to improve my work! Thanks in advance and keep up the great work.

Vivian Kumana , December 25, 2003; 07:29 P.M.

good god...

i said boring because i've seen all of these shots before. sure they're technically nice, sure they're great aesthetically, but they don't have any soul. at least, i can't feel them; i am not drawn to them in anyway. and thats just my opinion, no need to attack, no need to get offended. and definately no need for cheap shots.

remember, this is a critique forum, take the good with the bad. hell, just look at what people have said about mine! it's all bad. i just want to see some originality in works. every joe thinks he can pick up a camera and shazam you're an artist. if you just want to take pretty pictures, fine. but if you want to create art, then theres way more involved. it requires a thorough and well executed thought process. and honestly, i'm just tired of seeing the same thing over and over again (flowers, bugs, puppies, and the beach.) if you want to do it, do it differently and make it your own. you have to think about what sets you apart from everyone else.

geez, sorry i caused such a hubub about everything.

oh, if you really want to comment on mine, well, seriously keep in mind that mine is conceptual, meaning that my photographs were just a means to express my ideas. if you'd read the presentation introduction, maybe it would clarify things and you all wouldn't think i'm some derranged lunatic. you'd actually find out that they are a feminist critique of modern language and societal impact. and if you don't, like everyone else, then whatever. i don't even know why i'm writing all this....

Igor Titoff , February 14, 2004; 01:10 P.M.

Well, David,

It seems that a mix of good timing and a perceptive eye has served you well indeed.

Keep it up.

Petronas Twin Tower

Hi David!

Thanks for your comment. I took that picture without a tripod. Held my camera and leaned my arms on my car. It was exposed about 4-8 seconds, can't remember. As u know the camera I used doesn't have manual controls, I tricked the camera into exposing for a long time, hence the lousy focusing! I'll try this again with my Nikon F80 and a tripod. I have another pic also done without a tripod, but with a Panasonic digital. that pic's a lot clearer, but i didn't get the same "fake-looking" effect.

I'm really inspired by your work... love the colours!

Cheers! Clement

GORGEOUS

David, your portfolio is one of my favorites! Thanks for commenting on my pictures. Best regards

Larry Rosenmann , May 27, 2004; 08:16 P.M.

Wow!

I just discovered your work. I am in awe. Regarding the first reviewer who's comment was "boreing" I have two things to say.

1. My mom always said - if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Not bad advice.

2. In college, I had some friends who had attended a fancy prep school. When something bad happened, they would say "boreing," as a way of saying, that's very bad, or sad etc. It was not said with the long drawn out drawl... just the word. One day a friend missed classes for a few days. When the preppy friend asked where she had been, she replied, my father died. His response was "boring." That was the last time he ever used that phrase.

A story as colorful as your photos. Rosi

Suman L , June 07, 2004; 10:03 P.M.

Geez!! your wide angle landscapes are just awsome. Oh, thanks for your comments in my portfolio. By any chance you live around Lincoln?

Darko Juvan , June 14, 2004; 02:50 A.M.

Thanks on comment on my pictures. I think that you are making one of the most beatifull landscapes on photo.net.

Joel Temple , June 15, 2004; 11:43 P.M.

Fantastic portfolio! Most impressive is that most are not manipulated or enhanced. Just goes to show that there is great color out ther if you can see it.

Ovidiu Damian , June 18, 2004; 11:43 P.M.

Beautiful portofolio

Anne Morgan , June 19, 2004; 07:05 P.M.

Your photos are anything BUT boring! They DO speak to me. I especially love your beach/ coastal scenes. The color and tone is incredible! Nice work!

David Cousineau , June 24, 2004; 01:08 A.M.

Great photos of Arizona and Utah, Dave.

I am in Phoenix but it doesn't look as beautiful as your photos do.

Well Done!!

Sacha De Carlo , June 28, 2004; 11:08 P.M.

Dear David, thank you for your recent comments on my Grand Canyon shots! I appreciate even more after being in extasy looking at your amazing portfolio ! Cheers, Sacha :-)

David Pfauth , June 30, 2004; 12:31 P.M.

David, just reading the replies that you give to everyone about their comments to you, prove what a super person you are and how impotrant it is to you to be a great artist. Keep the photos comming, I use your page as a beautiful screen saver. Love it. DP

Justin Spyridis , July 02, 2004; 12:58 A.M.

David remember that all photography, just as art and just as most things in life is subjective. If you feel you can learn and gain benefit from comments then it is advise worth noting, if not then ignore them. Personally, I think your work is excellent and believe you have great talent. Well done and keep up the great work.

Terry Butler , July 05, 2004; 08:55 P.M.

Boring?

Well that picture of the tennis player might be boring but the rest is awesome. I particularly like the West Michigan images.

Erin Kroll , July 06, 2004; 12:56 P.M.

DAVID I love your portfolio. The way you work with color is inspiring.

Jerry Beasley , July 18, 2004; 02:32 P.M.

Such Beauty!

Maybe it is God that creates such beauty, but you obviously have the eye to see it and the skill to capture all it's glory. Thanks for seeing..and sharing!

Andrea Salini , August 25, 2004; 02:38 A.M.

David,

You have an incredible collection of beautiful shot!

You are really talented for landscape (and not only).

Thank you for shared your work!

Stephen Hayden , October 15, 2004; 04:11 A.M.

What a collection! I got the feeling your portoflio is a bit like mine-we have a lot of images... but i get the feeling like me, you cant bear to take out any of them to make the portfolio smaller because each one says something different!

That Viviana chic is whacked out. Typical mentally disturbed and socially challenged "Artist". Her work speaks for itself. how a one word comment is in any way constructive criticism is beyond me, Im suprised she even tried to apoloigize! Photo.net should just delete her profile.

Well done with all of your work, I especially think your seascapes(actually lakescapes?) and shots of flowers are especially poignant and vivid. Keep posting!

ahmet saner , November 07, 2004; 05:28 A.M.

David, boring to some but thankyou for capturing images that some of us are will never be able to see, keep up the excellent work Ahmet SANER

Luke P , December 13, 2004; 04:09 P.M.

Fabulous colours! Keep it up.

J.W. Kencke , January 10, 2005; 11:15 A.M.

Worry not...

Great images. Everyone is learning, my friend. We all re-position, reassess and reshoot our pictures many times. Even the ones who know all of photography are as yet students of life. There are no experts in that field - not live ones anyway. Keep shooting, great images.

Rusla Safin , March 10, 2005; 06:21 A.M.

David, cool stuff!:)

Lou Ann Aepelbacher , March 31, 2005; 06:54 P.M.

David, I absolutely LOVE your work. I often just visit your portfolio to take in some of your images of Michigan. I enjoy seeing *nature* through your eye. Keem 'em coming!!

karla contreras , April 06, 2005; 02:46 P.M.

Amazing Pictures

David, Thanks for you comments. The colums you commented on are from Vatican City. The color and the sharpness of your pictures is really good. I scan some of them and notice there where not digital. Again another point on your favor. I am a EE my self, is nice to see another Left Brainer exercising the Right Side.

Greg Goldstein , April 07, 2005; 02:15 P.M.

Beautiful collection of nature's finest captured in a spectacular way! I know that panorama's are difficult as are good flower shots but you seem to grasp the concept with ease. Nice to see someone shooting film (My film cameras-inc E0S 3, are collecting dust while my MkII does the work). Film really does translate beautifully.

Thanks for sharing your portfolio.

Andrew Forrest , April 14, 2005; 03:20 P.M.

don't know where you've been hiding, or if i've just been looking elsewhere, but i just found your portfolio today, and wow! your landscape work is superb. the colors, mood, composition, subject matter, use of wide angle and everything else about your images is fantastic. will most certainly revisit your work - thanks!

Janet Lee , May 01, 2005; 02:41 P.M.

Your work is so inspiring. The richness and clarity of the colors are wonderful. Thanks for commenting on my 'Refreshed'. Don't be shy about offering any tips. :-)

Thank you for your thoughtful recent comments on several of my images. I appreciate the feedback from someone whose work I truly admire. The simplicity of your images and vibrant color is great. Keep up the good work.

David,

Your portfolio is really great with extraordinary shots. My compliments. (regarding my 'wood eye'the wood was unfinish and very old and the light very soft)

Jean Pierre Romeyer , June 14, 2005; 09:51 A.M.

Hello David...I am particularly impressed by your folders "printed work" and "lakeshore"... I like the mood you convey in some shots built on purity and (apparent) simplicity...which is precisely not so simple but real art, with a perfect technical background : one of the best example may be "Ice Cliffs Forming, lake Michigan" - a masterpiece that makes my mind traveling...and this is what I expect from photography! ...Felicitations (congrats)!

David Roossien , June 15, 2005; 07:23 P.M.

I just want to take a moment to say THANK YOU to each and every person who has commented on my portfolio. It's so much fun when someone takes the time to express their thoughts about my work. Some of you are seeing my work for the first time, while others have been following my progress for some time now. My goal, like yours is to improve. I find all your comments to be an inspiration and invite you to continue to say what you think! Thanks again! David

David:

Haven't been by your portfolio in a while. I've sure missed out. Very nice work indeed.

Christoph Fischer , July 07, 2005; 09:33 A.M.

Exquisite Portfolio

Dear David, you have a fantastic portfolio. While looking at your photographs I have been uttering alternately oooh and aaaah. :) Very accomplished and very beautiful. I haven't looked at all you pictures yet, otherwise I will go through emotional overload :). But I have to say that my favourite picture is "Every day with you". That just struck a very strong emotion with me. A fantastic portfolio you have. Congratulations! I hope one day I will be able to reach this level of accomplishment.

J.W. Kencke , July 18, 2005; 04:26 P.M.

On my Lewis and Clark shot...

Thank you for your kind words. I was raised there and it still evokes a certain emotion when I'm taken back there, either in pictures or memories. Now then...I really enjoy your work, David. Your photographs take me to those places; they teach, inspire and soothe. Thanks.

Robert Semnic , July 26, 2005; 03:45 A.M.

Excellent portofolio with beautiful compositions and spectacular bright color. Congrats !

Mike Marcotte , October 24, 2005; 11:26 P.M.

I was in western Michigan a couple of weeks ago & made it a point to get to Petosky. I saw your photos in the window & was reminded of how different things look on paper as opposed to this PC monitor. We visited several galleries in the area & your 2 photos are top notch. Good work David.

Luke P , October 25, 2005; 08:13 A.M.

It's great stuff David. Do you really have to keep doing that electrical engineering?

David Roossien , October 25, 2005; 10:47 A.M.

Thanks so much! Mike it's great that you were able to stop by at the Photo Depot! A friend of mine owns the store, so I like to keep a couple of photos on display there. Petoskey is my favorite little town in Michigan. Thanks for sharing this with me!

Thanks Luke! You're too kind. To put things in perspective, just about 2 years ago I took my first "successful" photo (technically correct, aesthetically pleasing and told a story). Even if I could (doubtful), I wouldn't want to make a living taking photos. Selling a few more would be nice, but even if I don't, it's what I love to do.

Luke P , October 27, 2005; 08:00 P.M.

Well you must be pretty hot with a soldering iron!

Dan Roman , November 02, 2005; 07:39 A.M.

Great portfolio David. You have one of the best portfolio I see. There are many that will have some inspiration from you. One of them is me... I'll keep in mind the advice you gave to me recently. Regards...

Darko Kordovan , November 17, 2005; 01:13 P.M.

Hi David,

So many times I was here to get some inspiration and takin a place to rest my mindes when I had to escape from my daily obligations. I have natural need for beautifull images like any other soul in the world, when you find someone who is so superior in taking landscape images like you are , you can be a bit jeleous, but mostly you can appriciate the job he is doing.Taking landscape is a serieous job and you are doing it poetic and trully.I like the way (the gear you are using also) you are doing. I am living in beautifull country and my job is connected with my photos,so if I ever had more time I will surely go around and try to take nature the way you are doing.... Thank you David for sharing your work...

thanx for the valuable critiques david

im starting taking photography serious at the moment, so there is more stuff to come in the near future. at the moment i'm showing stuff i've done in the recent years without "wasting" too much thoughts about technical tricks... i love your pic "in our time" your portfolio is the best landscape / mood ive seen in a while. best wishes fr

Lionel Dupre , December 01, 2005; 03:33 P.M.

Wow. A nice portfolio here. I will take some time to go through it.

martin forget , December 03, 2005; 12:10 A.M.

One of my favorite portfolio David

There is a "way of seeing" that give a certain style to your portfolio, and that is a sign of maturity to me. I love the compositon of many of your photos and the balance of the colours and brightness are realy well done. I'll chek out your portfolio from time to time, it's a pleasure to my eyes. Hope that i'll learn from looking at you go. Regards, martin

David, I found your portfolio after your commenting on The Old Barn. Thanks so much for your comments and I, too, felt the movement in the photo but not as much as when you compared the barn to a ship. Wow!, You really have a great and colorful portfolio.

I love your portfolio and found it because Walter T mentioned you on his site as being from Michigan. Having grown up there (Benzie County) and with family still there, I try to get back whenever possible. When I can't, it's a wonderful thing to see home through the lenses of great Michigan photographers like you! Thanks!

Amazing portfolio with excellent photos (especially for me - landscapes). Good work!!!

Photography Class....

I am the teacher of a high school photography class, and we reviewed your portfolio, picking out images members of the class called out to see as it was projected on the wall. Your images were very well received. The class was in a festive mood, as we were just getting ready to dismiss for the school party and for the holidays. That is saying something considering attention spans were particularly short today!

Good job on your portfolio. You are building a great legacy!

Peter Welsh , January 12, 2007; 07:56 P.M.

Thank you David

Hi David .. what fantstic pictures you have here ... They are all very sharp and bright... I have just noticed your comment on my picture of Kerry.. Thank you for taking the time to do it. I have been asking about this problem in the forums as I am not sure whether it is my exposure levels etc are wrong or just a thing with the camera. I seem to have to add more light/contrast to most of my pictures in photoshop before putting them on here or printing them as the originals just do not seem right. As I am a beginner I think I may be taking the pictures wrong but I am not quite sure what I am doing wrong.. If you can find time to answer I would very much appreciate it .. Regards Peter

Paulo Merloti , February 06, 2007; 01:49 A.M.

What is it about software engineers and photography?

Loved your style, but what got me to your page was your work with 4x5. I've started 15 years ago with BW 35mm, now I've gone digital, but I think something's missing and I'm thinking about a view camera.

Can you tell a bit about your experience when you started with 4x5? And how do you compare it with digital?

My idea is to use both at the same time, being the digital a means to be a cheap polaroid. Have you tried it?

Pavle Marjanovic , February 12, 2007; 05:35 A.M.

Thank you for all of your comments! I enjoy reading them all. The comment about a classroom of students reviewing my work brought a BIG smile, as have many others. I appreciate the encouragement.

It's been about 4 years since I first started this journey. The more I learn the more I want to learn. This portfolio is getting difficult to manage. There are many older photos that need to be brought up to date, but there never seems to be enough time.

I hope you enjoy my newer work. Technically it is much better, but hopefully the ideas and content will continue to improve. Many of you on photo.net have been an inspiration to me and for that I am grateful.

David,

Your recent beach lagoon pic brought me here.

If I could pick two from your portfolio I would choole your 6th street Bridge and Striated Stones. But everybody has a different pick.

Enjoy the art!

Hello Friend!

Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.

I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.

Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting

Ken

Hi David,

First of all, I wish to thank you for your comment on my photo, "Afterglow". Secondly, I'm glad I discovered your portfolio which is full of explicit and outstanding images particularly your large format folder. I use a large format myself though sporadically but after seeing your images I now fully believe that 4x5 is the way to go even if we are now in the digital world. Just by looking at your images and your notations I have learned a lot from them. Thanks again, regards! - Lester

Dear David,

Thanks for visiting my page and your comments on my photos and portfolio. It means a lot coming from someone that makes amazing pictures like you do. I had a look through your portfolio and love your work. Your landscapes are great and I will keep an eye out for more of your work and hope to learn from doing so.

Take care,

Mirella

This is a splendid portfolio, and is right from the top draw. It is such a pleasure when I stumble onto a portfolio of this quality. I've added a few of your images to my list of favourites, I like your work so much.

Superb stuff!

All the best,

Rob

I grew up in Three Rivers and then in northern Indiana, so many of the western Michigan images here have a personal resonance for me. But sentimentality aside, you've done some amazing work in bringing the beauty of this area to life in photographs. Very sensitive images, with a good eye for small details and color. Eliot Porter would be proud. Thanks for sharing it.

Wonderful photography

I hope someday to be that good. Im a novice, recently new to picture taking, but I am addicted. My pictures are eclectic, and probably as the one reviewer here has stated, without creativity, but I didn't take them for anyone but myself and my enjoyment. I tried to capture a pleasant moment in time to be a reminder for myself. David, from a novice, I appreciate that you have shared the pictures so that the world can see some of the wonders of the United States.

Hi David - have you ever considered putting together a book of images from the Lake Michigan shoreline? I'm sure there'd be a lot of B+Bs, cottages and local coffee-tables where it would end up residing... you've got quite the amazing library of images to draw from.

David Roossien , January 20, 2009; 12:22 P.M.

Thank you for your gracious comments! I'm not spending as much time on photo.net these days, but like everyone else, trying to stay employed in this difficult Michigan economy, finish up a Masters in Computer Science and improving my website. I can't wait to be done with school so I can focus more on the lakeshore, gallery placement and a book. I'm still busy planning and making photographs so thanks for all the encouragement!

Hello David

You are a talented photographer and I feel inspired by your work. I am happy to have spent some time snooping through your portfolio. You have an interesting and diverse collection of images. There are so many that I like and I will return to comment on some of them another day. I see you have traveled quite a bit and have visited my part of the states but only one photo from ONP.

Thank you for sharing! :-)

Warm regards, Pamela
