Hi Jim, thnak you for your kind words
Thank you for your kind words on my gallery. You take the road less traveled and made good use of it. Lovely portfolio you have. I do that oftentimes too. There's a saying in Asia - see the difficult areas when you are strong - and then take the luxury stroll within the major cities in the world and enjoy it's amenities when your body aches from the passage of time.

Name of photo
Hi Jim, thanks for your comment. I was visiting Vancouver, navigating city traffic,people- visual and sensory overload. I looked up and there were the mountains, quietly dominating. Maybe the v.s. in the title of my photo implied
tension/competition between man and nature. I felt the harmony. I will think more carefully about naming my photos. I like how you altered my photo. I don't know how to do that yet but am slowly learning the marvels of P.S.Cheers.

Paul Henri , June 26, 2006; 09:43 A.M.
you have talent
Gunga, thanks for your comment. I have seen your portfolio before and it is quite impressive I must say. I quote you from your bio, "I have come to enjoy "people" photography in emerging countries and have become fearless about asking even the shadiest rogues for an opportunity to take their picture. The biggest lesson I've learned in the few short months I've been posting on PhotoNet is that most people do not appreciate portraiture (at least from a ratings standpoint) of third-world, non-caucasians who have their clothes on, particularly if their teeth aren't straight, their skin cracked, their clothes ragged and dirty or if they display other visible signs signs of poverty or disease."
Mostly this is probably true and I myself would rather look at a young beautiful nude than anything else, yet I being one who also likes to shoot old, craggy, broken-toothed people in 3rd world countries(check out my Women of San Miguel in People folder,) can also appreciate these and yours are gorgeous. I would love to see more of them in B&W but this is your choice and they are still powerful and I love them and also your shots of euqipment and wheels and old junk as well. Keep it up my friend.

Couldn't send you email, it has returned back
Hey James,
I'm not an expert thow, but I'm glad that I can share some experience. I already viewed this image, and commented it also. The thing is that the camera (if you don't have a great lens) and the light is not right ... you don't get enough saturation. Thow it looks more natural without extrasaturation ... I've seen that the images that receive great rates are a bit overexagerated with the saturation, tones, blend effects and other color manipulation with photoshop. I think you have seen for your self many sunsets/sunrises where the red is almoust #FF0000 :) ... the yellow and orange almoust clip ... they are not natural ... and still, they get above 5.5 or 6 rates.
The human is amazed by the unbelieveable maybe ... the natural is common (this is what I have came up with ... don't get me wrong ... I like to stick as much I as can to the natural ... but sometimes even myself gets "blinded" by the tools of photoshop, and exagerate sometimes).
Ok ... enough with this. Congrats again for your work ... I will return soon on your portfolio for comments.

Well, I must say that your portfolio is not bad. Your real life photos are infact just that. Real people as they are. I like them a lot because they are how I also see them. However, from a photographic point of view there are some problems. For example, some shots are either out of focus, blurred by hand shake, or some problems in post processing.
There are a lot of nit pickers on PN and they just love to shoot out a 3/3 for any reason. I get them all the time.
As you know I am not a portrait man, but I have one for you (I put it in my Hayrack portfolio) to give you an example of what in my opinion would get 4/5, 5/4 or even 5/5. It is a photo of my daugther and I put in a lot of effort.
One of the things you'll notice is how nice the Bokeh is. This is no accident. Also the texture of her skin was rendered very nicely by my lens (Nikon 75-150 Series E shot wide open at f3.5)
It also tells a good story IMO. So, these are the things that you are up against so I think that you shouldn't be overly concerned.
If you want to see some amazing portrait photos from Asia have a look at Bruce Percy at http://www.thelightandtheland.com/
Amazing what can be achieved with a camera.

Please keep in mind that I will continue to be critical and hope you will do the same for me- maybe it will help both of us!

Hey Jim !
Thanks Jim for your comments and your photos from China and Tunisia. Is always interesting to see same places thru lens of another photographer. Your Xian photo is sure different than mine, because when i was there in august 05 it was three days cloudy and grey. It's nice to see the place on a sunny day. It maybe seems that we are following each other around the world, but you are miles and miles ahead of me. But I can say that your portfolio is great motivation for future voyages. I'm from Croatia and in your biography I noticed that you were in the neighborhood. I'm glad you liked it. Cheers

Hi,
thanks a lot for your visit!
I especially liked the sentence in your biography (I hope you don't mind my quoting)
"I still consider myself more a traveler and writer than a photograper. I still use camera more often as a documentation tool than an artistic tool, rarely staying in one place long enough to wait for ideal photo conditions."
I can say the same about myself. I know that I am much better in writing than in photography ... but sometimes photography is good to illustrate a piece of writing. As about travel - in the past year there has been a lot, basically because of more funds, but I am now exhausted by so much travel ...
Glad I found somebody with similar interests! (I appologise for being less around on photo.net since all these travellings ...)
see you around

patience
Dear Gungajim,
I appreciate your comments to one of my pictures. About how to capture the instant, me I am using a 300 telex, and, the most important thing, a lot of patience and the capacity of observation. Just to be sitted in a place for a long time, looking and "hunting" the picture. It is a nice exercice of looking to oneself, in order to look the others with a love eyes.
By the way, I like your portfolio, is is very colourfoul and interesting because of the big quantity of travels you have done. Continue like that

I came to your portfolio by way of a rating you gave one of my photographs. I feel that you are much more a documentarian that a producer of fine art. I do not mean that in any negative sense, and hope you do not take it that way. And you are a hell of a good documentarian. Due to time constraints, I cannot possibly comment on all of the excellent photos in your portfolio, so I shall have to return with that in mind. I am enormously envious of your resources in being able to travel the world. Thanks for the rate, and thanks for providing the interesting portfolio.

Important Work
GungaJim, I just had a chance to read your bio entry, and I was impressed and moved by your statement regarding the photo treatment of Third-World people by Western shooters. I, too, am often sickened by photos, no matter how "artistic," that essentially treat any human being as an "exotic." You have consistently sought out the dignity and humanity in all the people you encounter. And for that, and for the quality of your work, I say bravo and thanks.
Roger Bella , August 19, 2007; 04:01 A.M.
Un bonjour de Nice
I haven't got comments on my portfolio since long. It's not the first time I "meet" you on "my place". Welcome as often as you want and thank's for your comments. I like very much the pictures of Eastern Island, "te pito no te fenua". I've been so long in Tahiti without have the opportunity to get there. You're luky to travel so much. Amazing work. best regards, Roger...

GungaJim-thanks for helping me with my photo. I used your suggestion and recroped-much better. You definitely have the eye and I really appreciate you taking the time not only to comment but to up load your thoughts in a photo. By the way I re uploaded the photo-giving credit to where it is due but to my supprise the ratings are lower-another reason to ignore ratings. You have a really ecclectic group of photos. The crab at Galalagos is wonderful. What is really amazing are your people shots-I get a real feeling of being there. As someone from Miami I really appreciate your Cuban photo's. Wish there were more-going there by the way is still politically( and legally) incorrect down here in the USA. Your Asian photo's even better. I would love to see some of the portraits converted to b/w. Senior citizen of T'Bilisi is crying out for this treatment! You really captured Miami nicely-my home base so I know like I said before you have the eye and talent.

I've never stopped to see what you have to offer in your portfolio until today, I'm ashamed to say. Hello Friend!
Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.
I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.
Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting

Dear friend, last Saturday night, my wife and I, had a big incident with our car (?head-on collision?), and we are alive for miracle: anyway, these not good moments, become also?good moments!... indeed, in these occasions, we can understand that life is so? breakable, for not being happy every day to awaken, drink a coffee, to smile, to make love and other simple things, to meet people and, why not, to do photographs!
For doing these things we don?t need a lot of money and power:?we need only our life and the capacity for surprise of simple things.
I have had a big gift, for this Xmas and the New Year,?that is to say,?I?m alive!...and now, I know, I?ll love more life!
My dear friend! I wish to you the same thing, namely, the ability to transform the accidents of life in?happiness to live better and to give the proper value to your life and to that of other!
?Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!....Ciaomau!

Hey Jim, or is it GungaJim?
You're right, we share a lot in common, but probably more than you think. Although I've never had a Malagasy wife, I've explored all 50 states, lived in Denver for 10 years, and have been to most major league ballparks. Growing up near Boston, however, you can guess where my allegiance lies. I liked the two (perhaps there were more) shots of kids playing baseball in their respective corners of the world. Could be a nice photo essay if you can find a few more (although MasterCard already shot the commercial). You've certainly got a good chunk of the world covered. I know what you mean about trying to balance the exploration part of travel with the picture taking part ? you could wait all day for the perfect light, but then you'd be waiting all day for the perfect light. Not always an option when there is so much world still to see. Even so you have some great shots in your portfolio. I'll check back from time to time to see where else you've been.

Jim, what a pleasure it is to view your photos of your travels. I especially enjoyed the photographs of the people. Through your exceptional photos you give us the insight that it is really a small world and we all have the same needs and hopes. One day you must go to Costa Rica. Looked through your big gallery and - wow - what a diversity of great images. I like your travel,- street- and portrait pictures. - They are visually strong, technically very good and just a lot of fun to watch.
I like to take the same kind of images - but boy, I am not nearly in your league.
Anyway, congrats for all the fantastic work - hope they gave you as much enjoyment to make as it is for me to watch.

You are a priviliged person having been able to visit so many beautiful places and meeting so many different persons and cultures.

Thanks for sharing these excellent images. Your photographs are best described as stories from all over the world. I know for sure that I won't be able to visit so many countries.
I am currently living in Beijing and working in the same building as shown in one of the photographs from your 'Beijing' folder.

GungaJim, I have visited your portfolio before, but today I spent the time to go through every folder. Very intersting, I love seeing the many cultures. Looking at the people, I get the opinion that people, no matter the country or culture, are pretty much the same everywhere. They just live in different situations, and make do with what they have. Excellent portfolio - one that should be preserved forever as a documentation of life on our planet.

Excellent work GungaJim. After spending more than 30 minutes on your portfolio, I felt like I had traveled along with you. Love your perspective of photographic images AND your philosophy on travel photography. Travel photography is more than just showing the Eiffel Tower or the Tianmen Square. Thanks for sharing.
