portraits

I really like your nude portraits, nude without being crude. And the color you use is beautiful. Keep up the good pictures.

fast primes , September 16, 2005; 09:32 A.M.

Very good, but . . .

Your stuff is very good Ken, but most of your pictures need just a tad more USM, say Amount 90 to 110, Radius 1 or so and Threshold of just zero. Perhaps even more, but please don't overdo it!

Ken Andrews , September 16, 2005; 11:17 A.M.

USM

Fast Primes, thanks for the advice. I actually do typically use USM of 150, radius .7, threshhold 0, and sometimes more than that depending on the circumstances. I'm averse to taking it much above radius 1, although in "Lady J, expectant" I used radius 2 because of the optical OOF problem with the RAW file.

MICK EDWARDS , October 20, 2005; 12:50 A.M.

Maybe it's interpretation but if your subjects had any more to say would I have the time to listen. I think you and they speak well together.

Antonio F , October 25, 2005; 02:49 A.M.

Amitai Schwartz , July 26, 2006; 01:09 A.M.

Ken. There are a lot of nudes on PN. I think yours are among the very best because they show unadorned beauty and clarity without either being risque or in need of accoutrements. Your style is uncomplicated and delightful.

Lee Jianmin , July 26, 2006; 01:16 A.M.

The best nude portfolio with class.

David Vorland , September 15, 2006; 12:07 A.M.

Great eye! Great cropping! Nice to see you're not hung up on the stuff they teach about cropping in Beginning Photography Class. Much to learn from here.

Your work it's nice. Many of your picture I really liked :) IMAO (but I'm a begginer) your light it's a little bit too crude (I don't know if this is the word), and that make your style personalized. With respect Razvan Ionita.

Brad Bradley , April 15, 2007; 11:49 A.M.

Hey Ken, Just looked at your portfolio and wanted to say it's a breath of fresh air to see....the consistency, the overall professional look, well lit, well posed and the overall ease in the faces of your models.

I like that your poses are filling the frame as opposed to the usual mile away look. Your models all seem to be verrrrrry relaxed, comfortable which is a testimony to your professionalism....or it's just the cookies & milk you give 'em!! jes kidd'n. Most sophisticated....Candace...IMO...

Your lighting is consistently right on...I'm sure many will disagree but everyone has their preferences here....I just like the consistency and uniformity.

I saw a couple of comments inferring that you over p-shopped a work...I don't see that in your work. I'm sure you work 'em but it does not look over done...to me anyway.

Well done dudeman. Regards, Bradley

Scott Lieberman , April 15, 2007; 12:13 P.M.

Good Protfloio

Lovely clean images, gives me alot to work with, and a lot of examples to try and recreate. Always learning

Ken Andrews , April 15, 2007; 12:22 P.M.

Clarence

Thanks for your interest. I shoot RAW, so the settings are changeable, but here's what I've found works best for me and my E-1:

Saturation: CS4

Contrast: -2

Sharpness: +4

Color Space: Adobe RGB

In Olympus Studio I adjust the white balance and exposure and convert to 16-bit TIF. In CS2 I use USM and Noise Ninja. Beyond that, a little touch-up of blemishes here and there.

Regards, Ken

Ken Andrews , April 15, 2007; 12:38 P.M.

Brad

Thanks for taking the time to comment! I'm still learning, still finding out what works best for me. Filling the frame has been a gut instinct, I just find the results more dynamic, less formal. No milk and cookies. Of course it's key to have a talented model, which means much more than her equipment. The lighting is also something that's been evolving. In that regard I'm surprised that you like the Candace photos, since I had some lighting issues that day. I want to do another session with her and get the lighting right, because I agree she has a very sophisticated style, coming partly from her background as a dancer. Thanks for responding to the p-shopping matter. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course, but I don't agree with the idea that doing some retouching detracts from the "purity" of the photograph. There's a difference between art and reality and I am trying to create some sort of ideal. Anyway, thanks again for your comments, and thanks for calling me dudeman.

Wow!

May I be so rude to suggest to you to do a article/tutorial with pictures of your studio and settings? I do belive that the photo.net community would benefit greatly, at least me, since you are my favorite photographer here when it comes to nudes.

Vittorio Pellazza , June 25, 2007; 08:23 P.M.

You have an original portfolio of nudes, finally clear and radiant atmosphere. Great technical works. Congratulations.
