Textures and the Time of Shooting (Buildings from 1900)
One method of bringing out the textures in buildings is to time the capture early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Also at these times, the sky is more inclined to give us a greater range of colour and hue.
Looking up is good: not only does it create a different perspective for the viewer's eye, but it often allows more scope for a more creative, perhaps more intriguing composition.

Centre-Centric (Single Photos)
There are "rules", really guidelines, that need to be broken, sometimes.
I find, generally, Location Portraits which are Centre Centric are not as interesting as those which have an internal movement for the viewer's eye. This is usually created by a balanced movement between: Foreground; Subject; and Background.
Tom sitting an the Rock with those lovely Autumn Leaves framing the Background and Tom sitting with his Guitar are two examples of balance, movement and stimulation for the viewer's eye: created not only by the Photographer digressing from a center-centric composition, but also by quite creative use of the Background and to some extent the foreground / props also.
Two nice Location Portraits, Brava.

Thanks
Thank you for the comment on my one, very lonely image in my Portfolio.
You encouraged me (perhaps embarrassed me also) to do some work and get to uploading. - thanks :)
You've added Flowers and Instruments since I last visited - I like the bug - that might be a boy thing - but on a more serious note I like the smoothness of the light you are capturing on the guitars.

Hi Kori, i just fell on your guitar photo with the very interesting angle and then it led me into your portfolio. For a beginner you do great job, including some masterpieces like the humming bird and the waterflow on the apple. All your nature photos are excellent. In portraits section, try to explore, try anything that looks "unusual" in light, expression, angle,You won't lose. And don't hesitate to ask for any technical assistance.Best wishes

Kori,
Enjoyed viewing your portfolio. You have some very nice photos here. I missed your comment on my gymnastics photos which you posted in March. Great to hear of your former gymnastics participation and judging. Hard to get good photos of gymnasts in the dark gyms but I keep trying. Thanks for the kind comments and sorry for the very slow response from me.
