Thanks a lot Grayham for taking out time to comment so comprehensively on that shot of the temple. I actually don't carry any filters with me when travelling for the simple reason that I don't have any and also I wouldn't know which to use when even if I had them. :) I had to increase the saturation and sharpness of that shot to make it presentable. Thanks a lot Grayham for your comments. You are right about my shot "Reflections". After taking the shot I realised that there was no unique point of interest in the shot. I guess I would have done better had I taken a shot of any single subject. Your crop of the shot however improved the visual aspect. And no..I don't mind the cropping you have done at all. Thank you very much for your comment about my Rexy and I'm so happy that a expert breeder like you have this opinion on this beautiful dog. We all at family really love him. He is a very brave and proud dog. We have 3 other dogs (Bijoux which is Belgian shepherd) (Rocky & Larisa , they are Great Dane) but Rexy is something else. Your are absolutely right about this breed.

After finding your kind comments on my portfolio, of course I had to return the visit...and I'm so glad I did. Your photos are truly amazing. I've been captivated by elephants from a very, very young age, (reincarnation? :) and "The Addo Elephant National Park" presentation brought tears. I've gone back several times and examined each photo in detail. Wonderful.

I’m not in the habit of explaining my art, which is about feeling rather than seeing, and one either feels my images or doesn’t, but since the same issues seem to arise again and again, you’ve prompted me to cobble together a brief statement of intent, something I can use as a personalized form letter in the future.

 No Grayham, I did not use a “pin-hole” lens cap, I wouldn’t know where to begin. I have no interest in pin-holes or lenses or f-stops or anything else related to the techno side of photography. Not being a painter, I employ photography as a vehicle to achieve my goal. I use a camera to “sketch” my images before scanning them into the computer where I can achieve the effects that “speak” to me, the same way a painter will sketch from nature before retiring to the studio to finish the work. I prefer to call it photo-based art, in an attempt to remove the stigma of photography as a bastard form.

“Look, for me the smaller image is the better version…” You’ve got it completely backwards. The image, most of my images, should be printed huge. You worry far too much about my “imperfections.” Has it not occurred to you that every effect is the result of a conscious choice? I am not a dabbler. What you see in my body of work is a consistent and hard won personal style. But then, you don’t feel my images.

Yes, I’m drawn to the vignetting, moodiness, and atmospherics of the Old Masters. I often hear the relatively unsophisticated comment that my works reminds someone of a painting. I think the way they mean it is in assuming that I simply push a button in Photoshop to create a painterly effect. Trust me, I could map out the list of tools and steps taken to create those effects, and they still, in a dozen lifetimes, would not be able to recreate it.

Vision lies between the ears, not in focal length, sharpness, or accurate color. The vast majority of the images shared on photo.net and similar sites are utterly meaningless, they evoke absolutely nothing. Why they’re even posted under Fine Art is beyond me. At best, they’re “pretty,” and those are the images that garner the most responses. They’re easy to like by people who have no interest whatsoever in art. Bluntly put, American really don’t give a shit about art.

Here’s how it works. I’m standing beside someone, they have a camera. A dog walks past. He snaps a photo of the dog, shows it to me, leaving me entirely befuddled. What was the point? Had I never seen a dog, I’d be quite impressed. But I’ve seen dogs, in fact, I was there when he snapped the photo. Unless he has an entirely new way of presenting the image of that dog, I’m not interested.

And, without any attempt to insult you, I see the same in your own work. Photos of elephants, lions, and zebra. Yes, they’re all very nice, but nice is not nearly good enough, has nothing to do with art. In the most basic sense, they’re about photography, but only in the sense of having used a popular mechanical device to record the image. They don’t transcend the image, the raw material. In some of your images, the composition and groupings are already there, so why not go far, far beyond, show us elephants like they’ve never been seen before. Tragic, mysterious, otherworldly elephants, anything but…just elephants. They’re “pretty,” but they have nothing to do with art.  

So now you know what I was hoping to achieve. Am I satisfied with each and every image? No, of course not. Art is never finished, only abandoned.

Yes, the lighting is the "bane of my life" too. The few models at my disposal are of very fair skin, so any direct sunlight causes white "blowouts". I'm working on it though.... thanks to the patience of the models.

You have a very interesting portfolio. I particularly like your bird and animal photos. I was in Africa in 2007 and going again in September this year, a lovely place to visit. Thank you for your comment on my Spruce Grouse, and yes I agree a more so diffuse BG would have been better, but one cannot get a bird to move when he is in the middle of a serenade!!
