You have a cool portofolio, very nice and different places. Thank's!:)

Scott Lewis , May 04, 2005; 08:24 A.M.

Hi thanks for your comment, if you need pics of Karlsruhe let me know I also live here and have lots

Maria Bostenaru , May 04, 2005; 03:10 P.M.

Hi Scott,

thanks for the comment :)

Strange how many photos some people take when they travel, as opposed to the place where they live. If not conditioned by my individual studies (for the faculty projects), I took no photos of Bucharest while there, but after moving to Karlsruhe ... Now the same applies for Karlsruhe. I will probably take more pictures after I move to Italy (soon).

... errr. Wait: I think I took some when I came in 1996 with the exchange, and thought I will stay much shorter.

Generalily the subjects I found interesting were rather related with the way of life here: Umzug, church procession, various "Fest"s.

I saw your Zoo folder from Karlsruhe. Maybe I will make a Karlsruhe presentation in the future and we can exchange comments?

thanks again

Unfortunately it went 'kaputt' on the 1st of May :( :( :(

Hi Scott,

have a lot of fun on your photo trips!

We'll talk when you are back - especially since it looks like it will take a while to get my contract signed, or, in other words, I will still be around for a while here.

kind regards Maria

george crawford , May 14, 2005; 08:55 P.M.

Thank you fo rthe visit

Thank you for stopping by last week. I have had a chance to look at your portfoilio and i must say tha tthe locations you have photgraphed are impressive. I tend towards details as houston does not offer panoramic views and like those shots of yours that are tight. Keep posting it is funto watch the portfolios grow

Maria Bostenaru , May 16, 2005; 07:07 A.M.

Hi George,

thanks for the comment as well! I have filled the whole extra quota I had for now, so probably in the future the portofolio will not grow as much as it did today ;), but I hope you enjoy the new additions!

warm regards Maria

Anamaria Dascalu , May 22, 2005; 04:38 P.M.

interesant portofoliu, mai ales ca prezinti atatea locuri :) best wishes!

Maria Bostenaru , May 24, 2005; 06:04 A.M.

genius loci

Hi Anamaria,

thank you for the kind comment. Yes, I noticed myself yesterday, that when I have at least 5 photos of a place, a genius loci begins to shape. Bucharest has a certain air, Budapest another, Salzburg again another. I need to add one more to Lisbon in this sense soon ;)

When I will feel there are enough for this, I'll start doing presentations - so keep watching :)

Multumesc de vizita

calde salutari

You will have to add Ireland to your list of travels.. I would like to see your views on my country

Maria Bostenaru , June 12, 2005; 09:02 A.M.

thanks for the visit and for the comment.

Well, strange you wrote now about Irland.

The same day (the 10th of June 2005) we had a grill party (although it is quite cold now, 4 degrees in the night sometimes brrr), and one of my neighbours was around Irland on a Yacht (I think) travel at the begin of May (after the former grill party we had, and when it was, nevertheless, warmer ...), so he was telling us the story how it was :)

Not to say that the previous Saturday (not yesterday) I've seen on TV "The Thomas Crown Affair" and then browsed for a few days the website of Pierce Brosnan. Case you haven't noticed, it is Romanian spoken in "The Thomas Crown Affair". I don't know much about Romanian diaspora, but then I found out that a bigger group of it should be in Irland.

I have also read (partially) the book on 20th century architecture in Irland recently.

So actually plenty of motives to go - just have to find the occasion.

Two years ago I had one: I was responsible for Scientific Exchange for the Marie Curie Fellowship Association, and we could have made a workshop there. At that time I preferred not to, as I need a visa to visit Irland and found that there are so many countries in Europe I have not seen yet and where I need no visa ...

warm regards Maria

John Keaveney , June 14, 2005; 09:32 A.M.

Hi Maria

I took your advice and created additional folders, I agree it works better, have a look and let me know what you think.

Christian S. Mendes , June 25, 2005; 08:58 A.M.

Hi Maria, I like your style of show the architecture of different places, it tells a history about the soul of the cities.

Byron Lawrence , June 30, 2005; 08:50 A.M.

Thank you so much for your critiques, they are greatly appreciated. I was looking at your photos (and really enjoying them.. seeing places I will likely never get to go) yesterday and felt inspired to work at a mildly different approach to photography.

Maria Bostenaru , July 05, 2005; 04:59 A.M.

thanks for the visit and for the kind comment. I also enjoy looking to your portofolio which shows the different facetes of your country, be it landscape, people, events, sports, flora or fauna.

kind regards Maria

Maria Bostenaru , July 07, 2005; 08:31 A.M.

thanks for the comment.

... I was looking to your recent uploads but could not see the inspiration trace ... could you please ellaborate?

and thanks for the kind words!

Maria Bostenaru , July 17, 2005; 12:03 P.M.

thanks for the visit.

Yes, I generally realise that I with a better camera and better software the photos would become better ...

In any case, I still like doing it, and since years - I am happy this comes across.

I am glad for your visit, looked at your portofolio also.

Vannak rokonaim Kanadaba, a magyar oldalrol, Montrealba, akik magyarul is beszelnek, es Vancouverbe, ahol csak a nagybatyam tud magyarul (es olaszul is, es en mar jo hosszu ideje keszülök Olaszorszagba menni, de a papírok ... remélem szeptember elsejére sikerül végre). Azért a Vancouveri rokonokkal tobbet levelezek angolul mint a masikkal magyarul - igaz, Kanadaba születtek és lehet könnyebb lenne nekik angolul írni ... Az unokabátyám nézte is a photo.net képeimet - tetszettek neki :)

Si prin photo.net m-a gasit si un coleg de gradinita (si scoala generala), care e la Montreal :)

Wolfgang Plautz , August 09, 2005; 03:11 P.M.

Cool portfolio

Hi Maria, very very good portfolio, you come around a lot, very much passion shine through your photos, I love your photos of Austria a lot but would also like to see more of your homecountry in the future. All the best, Wolfgang

Scott Lewis , August 16, 2005; 04:36 A.M.

Hi Maria, are you already in Italy. I was wondering if it would be ok to print a few of you recipes out as my wife family are half Hungarian so I could surprise them with a few traditional meals.

Maria Bostenaru , August 22, 2005; 06:43 A.M.

Plugusorul, January 2002

Hi Wolfgang,

thanks for looking and the very kind comments.

Well, the photos of Romania I have are quite old, although there are people who appreciate exactly this (but not the majority of photo.net users that is).

From the photos of Karlsruhe ... well, they need to get scanned.

Attached a photo of local customs in Romania, how they further live even in a blocks of flats environment (we had a discussion about this with a photo of a dance called "hora" by a fellow photo.net member). This is called "plugusorul", it a longer piece of popular poetry, usually told at new year.

regards Maria

Maria Bostenaru , August 22, 2005; 06:51 A.M.

hi Scott,

thanks for the interest :)

Sure you may, but be aware that there are no quantities added yet ... I will do so as soon as I'll have time, but this year does look crowded.

I will be this week at a conference in Greece, next week in Macedonia, and the other in Romania, after which I'll gradually move things from Karlsruhe to Italy ... Sorry about the delay, but this week I was occupied to prepare the presentations for these conferences.

kind regards Maria

thank you very much for the visit and the kind comment.

Maybe one day I will be a tourist guide (when it will not be worth any more to work in research) ... Languages and exercise in travelling :)

kind regards Maria

Erin Albertson , September 28, 2005; 03:49 P.M.

You're very lucky to have seen all those places. Thanks for sharing your trips with us.

Marjan Krebelj , October 13, 2005; 07:20 A.M.

Hey! I took a minute to look at your portfolio. Some photos have good potential, but i can't stop thinking how much better they could be with better optics and camera. Sometimes it would help to use a tripod (like in the case of one of your latest photo: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3785460 ).

Anyways, it's good to find an other young architect here... (i'm preparing my diploma).

James Meyer , October 19, 2005; 09:29 A.M.

Hi Maria

Thanks for your lovely comments on my photos! You've done some nice work yourself and have quite an interesting collection here. Keep posting! Cheers! James

Maria Bostenaru , October 22, 2005; 08:11 A.M.

thanks a lot for your visit, your comments, and your very helpful critiques.

Yes, I was thinking once that when I'll have no other chance I'll become a tourist guide ... Then somebody told me that it is not something to do for a lifetime. SO maybe I will stay a researcher, or get into publishing/editing, which I would personally prefer.

thanks again Maria

Maria Bostenaru , October 22, 2005; 08:21 A.M.

thanks for visit.

Yes, I have a tripod; I am just too lazy to carry it around (as laptop, video camera, photo camera are all so heavy, too ... now the video camera does not work anymore, and maybe I need a new photo camera ...).

I fact I realised that it is night, and did not want to take any photos, but my friend who brought me there (and who never had time earlier the day while I was in Athens) said me to try. I told him, it depends, on how stable my hand is going to be, but at the end it resulted in a composition even I liked.

I am now mainly uploading photos from Greece, as there are some on the conference website and maybe I will convince the organisers to put a link.

thanks again and regards Maria

PS: I visited your portofolio and think that I spotted the photos which reveal you being and architect :) what do you think?

Maria Bostenaru , October 22, 2005; 08:33 A.M.

I see that I am repeating myself in answers to portofolio comments, so I'll keep the answer short.

I am hoping since long to get the time to do some presentations, which will made what I have posted more coherent. Unfortunately the speed with which I am uploading is higher than the one I am doing good photos (means: I am running out of good photos).

regards Maria

Camelia Clinciu , November 18, 2005; 02:31 A.M.

You have an impressive travel photography portfolio and a lot of good pictures. Keep up the good work.... Tschuess, Camelia

Maria Bostenaru , November 21, 2005; 05:12 A.M.

Thanks for the visit, I am glad you like them!

I hope to find some time during the many travels (for example Karlsruhe-Pavia, because of moving) the edit the scenography photos which are finally digitalised from film. Those would be really original, since I also created the subject. But, I am slightly disappointed, since I sent a selected series of them to a photo contest and wasn't selected even to have them on display ...

thanks again and see you around

looking throught your portfolio is wonderful , feels like I was on your wonderful journeys...! regards Mike

Maria Bostenaru , December 20, 2005; 11:36 A.M.

thanks for the comment and for 'travelling' through the portofolio. I'm glad it did the job well :)

At the moment we've just left Greece and we are in Portugal. Well, with some months of delay, but who cares ...

I still cannot decide which country I like more, although the photos from Portugal tend to be better ...

kind regards and thanks again

Very nice portfolio.

Thank you for the kind comment.

True, there are things for which you need a couple of years to do. Although I gave up hope to be more than an average photographer, but at least I can use the photos I do in my written pieces (in writting I am better, luckily) ...

Dear all,

thank you so much for the kind words and encouragements!

I am sorry for returning so late - it was a month full of work, the last one ...

At least partly I hope to overweigh some of this shortcoming by my first digital photos, taken during this time.

looking forward for your next visit :)

I really love your portfolio! It's great ! especially the recipe part :P I am romanian but I left when I was very young and always wondered how to cook those. My husband will finally be able enjoy some authentic romanian cuisine ;) Great idea !

Maria Bostenaru , June 30, 2006; 03:06 P.M.

Thank you for the kind comment. Since my father was Romanian, and my grandmother, who cooked all the time after my birth Hungarian, I know much more Hungarian recipes, but there are a few Romanian ones, too. I still have to add "ardei copti".

I am glad you find it useful!

I appreciate very much the comment, the more since it comes from a photographer like you, from whom I have much to learn.

I think first I should exercise patience, in chosing the framing, light etc in my pictures, since most of the time I am shoting before thinking ...

thank you for looking and commenting

Maria Bostenaru , December 15, 2006; 01:19 P.M.

thank you for the comment :)

I am glad we share a common interest in the photographic theme of walls! In fact, I've taken those photos for scientific interest, and imagine that I might use for a scientific paper also the photos on the door!

Dennis Aubrey , May 11, 2007; 04:49 P.M.

Like the way you shoot building exteriors ...

... must be your architectural training. You are lucky to travel so much and take the opportunity to shoot so many wonderful shots.

Maria Bostenaru , May 16, 2007; 05:02 A.M.

Many thanks for your kind comment.

I was lucky to travel because I have had a project which provided funding to participate at many conferences. But I must admit that I am tired after so much travel. Especially it added to it that I had to move from Karlsruhe to Pavia and now I have to move from Pavia to Bucharest - some additional travel ... Now when it is weekend I only wish to sleep a lot!

thank you again

Mihai Suciu , June 09, 2007; 12:06 P.M.

You have a very interesting and colourful portfolio, Maria! The pictures taken in Hungary had a special "touch" for me, especially the ones from Budapest, but not only, of course. Thanks for sharing them! Again, thanks for sharing your work!

Eduardo Agustin Carrasco , June 10, 2007; 01:27 P.M.

hola Maria, I see than you traveled a lot, if you came to south america you are welcome to visit Ecuaador. Nice shots.

Maria Bostenaru , June 12, 2007; 08:30 A.M.

Thank you very much for your comment. The photos from Budapest are done following a work for a seminar while I was in Germany on early 20th century architecture. The text attached in the requests for critique is translated from the text of the referat to that seminar.

Bibliografia a fost insa in mare parte in limba germana.

Maria Bostenaru , June 12, 2007; 08:32 A.M.

Thank you for stopping at my portofolio.

I think there will be a while till I visit South America but sure, I will think of Ecuador. I had a colleague in Germany who was from Ecuador and who came to Pavia, Italy, afterwards, just like me.

Mihai Suciu , June 13, 2007; 11:27 A.M.

Salutari, Mihai.

Hello Friend!

Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.

I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.

Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting

Ellery Curtis , July 18, 2009; 01:10 A.M.

There is alot of comments so If I have repeated, sorry. I am impressed! You have certainly been to many places - as others have stated, a bit of digital editing would do wonders to all the beautiful pics you have. One thing that I noticed quite a bit is that your shots were many times out of level - this can too be corrected with editing, but at the cost of cropping some of the photo. Anyway, keep on shooting and good luck.

I love your architecture shots you have been in many coutries and you have a good eye, about your serfportraits I dont like them, because you have three different resourses to use .the first a good camera, the second a nice location and the third your pretty face, just get a better quality and you will get a wonderful self portrait, congratualtions for your work and thanks for comment my photo. My best regards. Jorge Luis

I see a very good photographer in you that is walking a lot but is ready to fly(to try) Yes is true that your photographic notion is basic, but i see all the enthusiasm and dedication it takes to take this further. Besides, already I see a lot of very good images there. So, it is time to get yourself an SLR and all the lenses you can with it, only then you'll start to see and practice whats waiting for you to discover. Good luck.

Thank you for your comment, yes, I hope to buy a SLR next year. Just that my salary dropped a lot when returning from Italy to Romania and what was in Italy a small part of my salary in Romania is a more months salary ...

Hello Maria,

I just wanted to say that whilst I was very critical of one of your pictures, your love of photography is something that really shines though; that is something I really admire. You also clearly love to travel; this is something we have in common. I think it would be very useful for you if you downloaded the free processing program GIMP. I look forward to seeing your future results.

Keep shooting! All the very best,

Maria; I very much enjoy your photography. It is good to see someone who has a vision.

If I may make a suggestion. . .

You could improve the quality of your photos without buying a new camera (though I do think you are ready for a better one). The two things I see 'wrong' with your photos are:

 1. camera movement, what I call the 'shakies'. Learn to hold the camera steady at all times. If your camera has a viewfinder that you can put to your eye, use it. Bracing the camera against your body is far more stable than holding it at arms length.
 2. Overall softness and not very sharp. This COULD be a focus issue with your camera, but many people don't realize that an editor program like photoshop elements or GIMP have sharpening tools that will improve the overall sharpness of the photos. I think all of your photos could use sharpening in a photo editor. (and perhaps, some, could use some color adjustment)

I've offered this advice, in a spirit of goodwill and a sincere desire to help. If you are happy with your photos, then good for you! And feel free to please ignore my advice!

William Browning , May 21, 2013; 11:54 A.M.

You have a very extensive folio of shots which was very interesting to visit. I really like the food shots and the details in the architecture shots. You can feel from the shots that you have a passion for photography. Keep that passion and good hunting for new shots. Best wishes William.

I'm in no position to give advice to experienced photographers, but if I had to give one to you it would be "focus on quality, not quantity". It's really praiseworthy to have +5000 images on this site, but many can be improved aesthetically by taking them more carefully. Sorry if that sounds critical. It's meant to be constructive.

I am in the habit of seeing your many photos of architecture. It has a good portfolio; but I would like to comment to him that there is a trend to turn out to be lightly inclined towards the right; at least it seems to me and this way I comment on it to him. Regrds.
