To Ging
Keep on shooting. You've got great passions for people. That is the necessity to be a great photographer IMHO. Plus you've keen eyes which makes capturing a magic moment so easy for you. I will come back from time to time for your new works.

Amazing Portfolio!
Michael, thank you for your comment on my photo which led me to your portfolio. That's where I've been for hours, lost in your artistry and talent. Your bio is very impressive, and I am flattered that you would comment on my work. Having lived in Phoenix for years, it makes my heart ache looking at the images of the Southwest. Your body of work is overwhelming, just plain breathtaking. Then looking at each photo as a single piece of art, is exhilerating and educational.Thank you again for your comments, they are greatly appreciated. I am your newest fan!

Striking
A lifetime achievement of striking photography, and that is the word I would use if was to characterize it in one word only. I find the greatest value of your pictures, they are window-like. A window does not condemn, nor it praises, it just shows in an unbiased, open way. Truely amazing, great photography!

As others have noted: really a fantastic set of photos. You have the "eye" for both composition and the human element. That's rare IMO. Since I shot with basically the same set up as you for most of my life I have a special appreciation for your black and white photos shot with the Nikons and Tri-x, my all time favorite combination throughout the late 60's till recently. Now I shoot digital.

You are master of photography. Your images tell a story without reading any captions, any articles, or any titles. You convey such mood so fluidly in your photos. Your resume is impressive and so are your images. You should be proud of what yo have accomplished in your lifetime in photography. Millions of people would love to be able to capture a single image as good as 9/10 of your portfolio. All of your photos are worth framing in any art gallery. You, sir, are something special. You are in elite company when it comes to photojournalism.

Michael
I see it as a privilige that I am able to view your photographs. Your work, especially the black and white images, is quite astounding.
Sometimes I feel part of "the lost generation". When I became interested in photography there was no digital. Only film, and wet darkrooms. I could however not afford it to make it a serious hobby. Now that I probably can (can we ever?), it's all digital and I fear to late for me and film. I am saddened by that, especially after viewing your work.
I think I would have loved B&W film. But I am passionate about photography, so whatever the medium, I'll move on.
What strikes me from your work is the dedication and passion that goes into your images. The time spent and the places you have been, the people and events you have seen is just amazing.
When looking at your treasures, I don't feel inclined to comment (although I suppose I "have" to) on the composition, light, textures and rules and whatever goes with the territory of the images. I want you to know that the feeling of passion and compassion and living life and paying tribute to it all, shines through. THAT is what photography must be about - I have been looking for the answer to this question. I now realise that the answers cannot be written, it must be viewed.
Thank you.
JH

Thank you so much, Michael, for commenting on my lacrosse photo. By introducing yourself it gave me the wonderful opportunity to peruse your most impressive portfolio. Michael,
Thank you for your comments on the first batch of my MF shots. I am concentrating on improving my processing skills and looking to buy a MF scanner. Could you let me know which ones among your portfolio are MF negs scanned with an Epson. I noticed 2 so far - Stairway to Heaven and the Golden Retriever. What scanner is that?
Great B&W portfolio!

There is a lot of real honest life you have here. I truly like your folder. Specially black and white photos. You seem to have a finger that can wait until the moment is truly right.

Michael, I just had to let you know that as a former resident of the City of Phoenix, and subscriber to the Republic for a little over 20 years, that it was a real treat to run across you here in PN. I have always loved your distinct style and your wonderful images, and used to make a point of pointing out your shots published in the paper to my wife saying, "Isn't this a great shot?" Anyway, I just wanted you to know how nice it is to be able to coninue to follow your wonderful career and work through your images posted here. Please keep up the great work, and thanks for all of the wonderful images, Michael! Cheers! Chris

I just spent
the whole hour looking through your eyes at the world. And I didn't detect any evil in them. I find the way you look at it is very refreshing and almost untroubled, it also shows the self-discipline and an absence of chaos. Some pictures are so good it's crazy.

Amazing
Your portfolio is truly amazing. Your use of light is what stands out most, and I've noticed so far in my short photography life that if you can master the light, you've got photography all figured out. It's a hard thing to do, and you have done it. Thank-you for your comments on my critique request. I always appreciate any comments and criticism from any experienced photographers that can help to shape me into a better photographer.

Looking at your pictures it is not surprising that they have been featured prominently in major publications. Art is about communication. Through your camera you capture the essence of your subjects and convey what you want to say. Your pictures speak eloquently about your passion and establish a connection with your audience. You are quite an artist.

Thanks for the comments on my ants. They are my mothers ants actually and she is dying this year. She loved her peonies and the ants facinated me ever since I was very young. I like your stuff. I also lived on the south rim of the Grand Canyon with the Navaho and Havasupi. So....your world there interests me. I envy your other travels too. Glad that you share your work with the world. Michael , when I saw your comment on my portfolio just now , your name seemed vaguely familiar. Now that I have seen your offering to this site , I would like to say a thing or two . I can't imagine how I could have missed your pages thus far .
The experience is like looking at a second volume of 'Family of Man', no less . Some of your shots , in my very humble opinion , are even better than some of Edward Steichen's choices ... How you achieve those lighting effects ...amazing .
I'm most honored by your kind comments on my portfolio and will in future
study your work closely , perhaps some will rub off. Another thing ... you have
met a good number of famous people in your time and , well , you did them justice ... but it is really the common folk you allow to shine ...

Hello Michael,
Regarding your b/w shots and as one of the few "wet darkroom freaks" nowadays, I want to congratulate to your portfolio. It's not just the capture of the moment in the shots, that is really amazing, but one can see that behind every published PN-Photo of yours, there's lots of darkroom work and skill behind.
I also like the colour shots but I'm more the b/w person. congratulations and thank you for sharing the photos with us.

Michael:
It's extremely hard for me to put into words how impressed I am with your body of work that you have here on the Photo.net site. I feel like I would just be repeating what everyone else says.
I will say this, though. I admire and respect your work tremendously. I think your work goes well beyond what we ordinarily refer to as "photo journalism" or "documentary" work. From your comments on some of your photographs, it's obvious to me that you really think about a lot of your photographs both before and well after you have made them. This is, I think, what sets you apart from from the majority of photographers.
I can't think of anything else to say that wouldn't sound like a cliche.
It's just a magnificent body of work.
Respectfully,
Jim

A friend suggested I visit your portfolio. I had seen many of your photos in the past and was always impressed, but somehow the name didn't register. En masse, your portfolio is a knock-out. Technically, everything is exceptional. But beyond that, you have a gift for capturing the spiritual. Not in a religious sense, but that unifying aspect of humanity represented by photos that are thoughtful, connected, and inspired.

Your images are wonderful.
However, for your benefit and others, the Amish do not like to have their picture taken. Most will refuse to have themselves photographed when asked. They consider pictures of themselves graven images, a sin. We have several Amish friends and neighbors and if a camera comes out their backs go to the camera, or they place themselves out of the shot. You will not find a photograph or painting of a family member in any Old Order Amish house.
We live 5 miles from where the young Amish school girls were murdered(southern Lancaster County). The local news only had audio interviews, out of respect of this belief. Some of the national news teams early on weren't clued in and some, never respected this request.
Frankly, our Amish friends consider attempts to photograph them extraordinarily offensive. You can take a picture of their house or their horse, but not them.

HI Michael,
i am in wonder that i haven't left a comment on the bottom of your portfolio yet, regarding the hours i spent here, looking at all these beautiful photos, and trying to figure out how you did them and what they tell me. We come from different times, technically speaking, i never set a foot in a dark room, but with all the advantages digital gives me, i don't have one photo in my portfolio, that can match yours. Speaking about time: another thing i love here is the travel through it, on which you take the viewer. it's a great experience to see it passing through your eyes. be assured, that i will continue looking. and: thanks ALOT for sharing on this site. best wishes from vienna, flo rainer.

Hi Micheal, I'm almost speachless to express how much I have enjoyed viewing your images. I am also truly honored that you took the time to comment on one of my images "Out of the gate". Every time one of my friends tells me how great a photographer they think I am, I'm going to send them to this web site and say "Thank you so much for the compliment, but if you want to see what truly talented photography is, have a look at Micheal Ging's images...you'll be blown away". Thank you Micheal for the inspiration and your vision from behind the lens. Cheers, Sandra Sigfusson

great portfolio, no doubt about it. I especially like your b&w. What strikes me is that some, not all, are printed darker then they usually should have been while you do like a lot of contrast. That is something I like very much.
Somebody told me once "we are going to teach you to walk in the middle of the road, after that you have to look for the sides yourself. That is exactly what I see here. Somebody who hasn't stuck to the middle of the road but who is able to convey to other people what is intended by the photographer.
Paul Jones , March 01, 2008; 12:04 P.M.
Quite a variety of excellent work. The shot of your son playing in the runoff water struck a chord. Too many good shots to comment on. Though I was particularly interested in the prison shots from Philadelphia. I went to the museum exhibit in Philadelphia about that prison. It was quite amusing that they had one of the cell doors, made of steel to keep the dregs of society at bay, on display with a prominent sign reading "Do Not Touch" as if it were delicate art. What were they thinking.
Shambhala M. , March 05, 2008; 03:14 A.M.
Oh my!!! Every single one of your photos is so beautiful it makes me jealous! I believe that negatives are 'drafts' - it's only once correctly printed that they become images. You prove my theory with your punchy tones, and each of your subjects deserves admiration. I am in awe and add you on my Interesting People List.

Having viewed your portfolio, I think I can safely assume that your advice is well-grounded and well worth accepting! I can easily find much in your work to emulate and learn from. journey
Thank you for this inspiring journey in your thoughtful and sensitive style of capturing the goings on on this planet, Michael. I feel enriched after having entered your world. And thanks for reminding me again that those "walls" people put up around them come from "feeling vulnerable."
