Very Nice
A good depiction of the midwest, Iowa or Illinois. There is a tendancy to downgrade rural life and the photos are worthy of the National Geographic.
My own experience has been that people from other parts of the world are fascinated by this part of the country.

Happy New Year
I have just spent an enjoyable half hour stomping around your portfolio. There are a lot of things about your photography that I missed noticing. You have a very discerning eye for the merits of ordinary situations to make them jump out at us with meaning, a new way of looking at old things.
Today, I noticed the colors in, and the angle you shot the bridge. Beautiful stuff. And for something quite the opposite there is your corn crib abstract.
I must make at least a monthly pilgramage to this portfolio to keep up to what you are doing.
I have added your photo.net portfolio to the "links" page of my home page, becasue this is some photography that I find inspiring. Hope you don't mind appearing on my very amature page. It is at www.mmmee.com if ever you have time. The page is only 1/4 finished right now. I have lots to do on it yet.

Mike
Thanks so much for your comment regarding my photo "A Bride, A Curl And A Puff Of Air"! This was my first attempt at wedding photography. As a gift to the bride, I did some "behind the scene" photography as the hired photographer did the traditional formal shots. I was thrilled to have capture such a honest moment in a bride's special day!
I'm trying to build up some experience in this area so I can start to make some $$$ so I can do my true love - Nature photography. Your comment really gave me the courage to keep moving forward in that direction.
I took a journey through your portfolio and was impressed by the images you have also captured. I loved the bride as she was unsure of the lines and seams of her dress. I could hear her saying "Something's weird about this".
Thanks again Mike!

Photos that Matter
Difficult to choose which of the several photos that matter. Think I like the pre-1970's the best; however, the Farmscapes are getting a lot of my attention. Since the vote is still out here, guess I'll just have to keep coming back for more. Excellent portfolio!

There are some photographers that just keep getting better and better because they do what they feel they have to do and because they have a vision. You have that certain something and I think you have barely scratched the surface. You have managed to dodge the various minefields here on PN and become a gifted photographer. You don't get caught up in all of the rating nonsense and most of your images thoughtfully articulate the world around you. It was a pleasure to meet you and your wife at the Milwaukee Art Museum and I hope I see you again, even if you are a "flatlander".
Nick Meertens , August 29, 2006; 04:43 A.M.
I'm impressed by your portfolio Mike. Your photos, although different in subject matter, all have the same 'look and feel' to them. Your have your own vision and I find that vision very appealing! Thank you for sharing.

Mike,
I like your photography very much. There is a simple realism to it that appeals to me a great deal. Maybe the right word is 'unassuming', or 'unpretentious', but it is real people and real things. Perhaps it is just my prairie upbringing, but your photographs speak to me in a genuine way. Rick

Hi Mike
Thank you for looking in on me. Your portfolio is sure something else. Congratulations!!! As for your comment about taking a photo that matters, well, in my opinion every photo matters. Whether just to you or someone else or the whole world, is of no consequence.
By the way, the leaf you commented on is a real one, it has no more "meat" on it, just "ribs". Sorry, but that is the only way I can describe it. As for the stained glass look, it got the same "treatment" as my other abstracts. Best regards from............Helga

Mike, you've got terrific shots here - I particularly love the cars and the rural relics. I notice on you say that your goal is to one day take a photograph that makes a difference. Well, I think every photograph that anyone views in some way makes a difference, only maybe a small one, but that image is forever with them. When I look at your photographs taken around Illinois I can imagine standing in those locations even though I've never been there - so that's made a difference to me. Thanks and keep enjoying!

Hi Mike. you really have a great portfolio. Your B&W take on life and people especially is really impressive. Dennis Aubrey , January 14, 2008; 04:09 P.M.
Mike, I read in your bio ...
... that you wanted to take one photo that matters. Given the difficulty in fulfilling that objective since change is a basic part of the universe, I might suggest that your body of work as shown in your portfolio does matter. A consistent, sympathetic, humanistic view of the world around you. I think it is simply wonderful work. Congratulations.

I'm visiting you portfolio regularly, enjoying your work a lot, and am very happy everytime I see on my list of "interesting" people that you updated your portfolio, so don't worry about me leaving comments. But, I can't see how it would be possible for you to start not seeing the inner soul of the people anymore, and I'm pretty confident you won't ever give me any opportunity to bust you in the chops :-) Not only you make me discover a place you love, but I can feel your love and undertstanding of its unhabitants, and here resides your art. I also suspect that even if you were by any chance shooting an "undignified" person, you would make this person shine.
Please keep shooting and sharing.
thanks

Thanks for commeting on my image "Bird Tree..." I know it's very simple but when I saw it there with all the birds and the sun lighting up the exposed branches, I had to capture it.
I really love your black and white images. I could learn so much from you. I have recently become very interest and intrigued by black and white film. I've been taking an old Nikon FM (I bought off e-bay) out and trying to master this artform. My biggest problem is not having a great supply of interesting subject material where I live. Oh how I dream of going out to Death Valley someday with rolls and rolls of black and white film.

you do
outstanding work
when those who know ask for
a body of work consistent showing
the artist's vision - this is it
while i'm not sure i could pick any individual image out
and say it's yours, it's easy to see the underlying thread
in every image you've presented - like the whole thing is
coherent.
phenomenal

I also like the pool table shots and how you used the lighting for composition. Just excellent!

Dear Mike,
Thanks a lot for your honorable words about my photography and very small part of my portfolio, I appreciated.
I'm really impressed visiting your portfolio after my silent five years on Photo.Net. Your photography talent and skill are just impressive. Especially your B&W mediums are mostly enviable. Hope we can get more opportunity to share photos . Congratulations.

Mike. . . I've gotten a huge buzz from your work for quite sometime now, but for some unspecific reason more so lately it seems. I feel very connected to your PEOPLE folder - some of the shots are stronger than others, as can be expected, but they all share a photographic sensibility and a point of view that belongs to you and you alone, that is empathetic and pure.

Mike,
I'd forgotten all about that lonely pheasant going about his day so I had to go through your collection to find it.
Good grief, you have some very compelling imagery here. Very sensitive renderings, a real pleasure to explore. Congrats.

hi
I highly enjoy seeing the work of those who see the beauty in everything and can capture its inherent quality. It takes a certain flow in life to find that groove of recognition. Enjoy the ride. You evidently are.

Hello Mike,
First of all, thank you for your kind rating on one of my photos.
I used this occasion to browse your portfolio and I am much impressed. I like very much the idea of the " Cameras before 70s" and the "Treescapes" galleries. I am fascinated about the diversity of tree images as displayed in your gallery and the artistic touch you bring out of these. I will certainly revisit your work from time to time to learn.
Good light!

treescapes
Mike, I love your treescapes, because they do matter. the creation of beauty will always matter, and on top of that you've transported me, not only to a place in your past, but also to places in my own. Too bad you can't charge by the mile!
be well, do good work, michael

Technical Question
Your work is beyond interesting. Thanks for sharing. By any chance did you take any of these with a 1970 Fujica?
Do you have anything on Miha and the Cryin' Shames? If so, would love to see it.
