Your porfolio is very good. Especially your fantasy work deserves the highest rating for originality. Your rating of 3 for my "The Big Blue" is a little mean, considering that there are hardly any underwater photos on pn at all, to start with. Does this mean I should rate your landscapes and trees and sunsets with 2 or 1? After all, even though they are very beautiful, we've seen everything, right? Sunsets and trees and birds etc. by the thousands!

Ratings
I realized that many PN members were offended by my ratings, which is not really a surprise, but it has NOT been my intention. Let me first say that I rate the pictures based on my photographic experience and my overall artistic taste not based on other expectations or personal ties.
I am a new member of the PN community but have been following its progress for a long time.
During this time, I've observed the ratings go higher and higher without apparent increase in quality of pictures. Noone seems to admit but there is an expectation that you buy good/bad rating by a good/bad rating.
I am not sure what this rating game is good for?
If you'll accept only the good ratings but not the bad ones, then you are taking the ratings TOO seriously. In grand scheme of things, If your work is really good, the law of large numbers will determine the true value of your work, not the single number rendered by me.
I am not a good photographer. I do not pretend to be a good photographer, if you are offended by my ratings you can simply blame me as an ignorant and mean person. Hope that relieves the pain somewhat.
However, please do not get your hopes high or low with the ratings game, especially if the number of ratings is "statistically insignificant".
Erik Adams , July 26, 2004; 01:55 P.M.
A very nice portfolio. Some of these images are stunning in their composition and color. Where can I find some trained birds like that? Just kidding. What I'd really like is to able to compose pictures this well. Can this be learned, or do you "have it" or not?
Mehmet Ozgur , July 26, 2004; 09:27 P.M.
Can this be learned?
Thank you Erik. I'd not dare to claim that I know the basis of "shared tastes and values". IMHO, some of key principles of composition can be taught, but it is up to the person to follow these leads.
The beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. It is good to see folks that have similar eyes.

Sayin Mehmet bey, fotograflarinizi begenmemek mumkun degil. Ilk basta dumura ugradim 'WOW mukemmel fotograflar!' diye. Fakat iki gun sonra farkettim ki fotograflarinizda asiri teknoloji kokusu var. Fotograflar hala guzel fakat keske teknolojiden bukadar fazla yararlanmamis olsaydiniz diyorum. Mesela su iki fotografiniza bakilirsa farkli manzaralar ama bulutlar ayni...
Mehmet Ozgur , August 19, 2005; 10:14 A.M.
Image-making or picture-taking ?
Dear Kamran, I made no secret that I use PS in my images. As I repeatedly wrote and declared, it is not very productive to try to define what photography is or should be. Personally, I find "purist" approaches, which limits the manipulations to photographs to varying degrees, too restrictive, especially in this digital age. Creativity should not and must NOT end with a click of a shutter. Creativity should not and must not end with what can be done in analog ways. (having said this, I can make very similar analog prints to two images you pointed in traditional darkroom too. I spent far too long in the darkroom to appreciate what the new age has brought.) At the same time, I am NOT for senseless digital manipulations for the sake of art.
I am NOT trying to mislead, or fool anybody. I do use PS to create some of my images. When I do, I do state as such. You may view such manipulations as cheap tricks to get noticed, yet, I feel this is the next logical step in the "art" of photography, to explore far reaches of the imagination. Again, I'll be quick to admit that I'm not as good as pros or others on the PN, in digital manipulations, nevertheless, it hurts me to see comments that suggest as if I am trying to hide something for no clear benefit to me or anybody else.

Blown Away
Well you're difinately well on your way to be a very successful visual artist by the looks of your outstanding portfolio here. My favorite part is the "smoke works". Simply amazing. I've tried taking good pictures of smoke in the past but never seemed to get the lighting right and lost intrest to other subjects. You've got it down and it shows, PS or not. I am wondering how you were able to manipulate the smoke in such a way, it looks like a long exposure, or is it just digital effects? I suppose it could be a little of both.
One thing I would like to see is an invert image; white background, black smoke. Just an artistic opinion, of course.
Thanks for sharing your work! I will be checking back on your progress.

Dear Mehmet
Dear Mehmet, First I have to apologize for misunderstanding, I've just read my comment again and I guess I didn't congratulate u at first thus leading to such a conflict. Offcourse it is not easy to make such a portfolio and offcourse you should have a certain ability to work with the digital. I didn't mean to blame the one for using PS, instead I was just dissapointed, cause at first I thought these were originals! That's the only thing I was trying to mention. Keep good work. Take Care

Just my two cents on two things:
1. Digital Manipulation..
2. Your photos
So, 1. Manipulation (debate is and will remain for a while now - open) it starts from the moment you put your eye on the viewfinder - you censor what the others will see...you chose what to show me , what yu live out, the angle, perspective, approach, expression, copmposition...then you use filters...neutral, coolers, warmers, polarizers, graduals whatnot...then you change my perception through "distorsions" via optics , you show me the world compressed through a telephoto or streched through a widelens or really distorted through fish eye...all this to say that your photos dear Mehmet are wonderfully mastered!
Your "clean" stile, your powerful expression and penetrating perspectives dazzle me. If you are a fake, talk about Dali...
I agree there is a kind of manipulation that it is deceptive, not yours. YOU PROVED YOU ARE JUST AS GOOD IN CLASSICAL photo. your trees series are just amazing, captivating and you need to continue sharing your work with us.
I see people being bothered by your ratings (just the low ones) without comment. You might want to address that by leaving a short comment along..it would (i guess) really help them.
Congrats, look forward to more...

I loved looking at your paintings or should I say "photoshoppings" but as far as I am concerned, they are not "photographs". We probably should find another word and definition for what you are doing 'cuz like I said, I just can't bring myself to call them photographs.

Major Black , November 26, 2005; 02:29 P.M.
I am a harsh critic. That said, I really like your work. You are right to explore PS techniques. To not do so is limiting. It is an artists duty to explore, to go beyond, if they are able. The smoke series is interesting. I hope that you continue with it. It's something that I have planned to do but now that you've done it so well, I'll explore a different path. The "flop technique" is an interesting and simple one that certainly can be done without PS for those who condemn such things. You have much talent! Keep going!
Mehmet Ozgur , December 01, 2005; 04:18 P.M.
This I believe
A photographer's manifesto
I believe that the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There is no
universal beauty encoded in our DNAs. There are many group of people that
enjoy different kind of beauty. Nevertheless, I do believe that the beauty
is part of all human-beings. We get the same universal pleasure when we
see something we like.
I believe that a photograph, alone, does not have a meaning. A lone
picture is like a single note in a symphony, or a single frame in a movie.
Viewers are likely to create personal contexts wrapped around pictures and
attribute deep meanings to them. However good or bad this may be for a
picture, noone should assume that these assigned attributes are universal.
I believe in the "state of the art", defined as the highest level of
development, as of device, technique, or scientific field, achieved at a
particular time. Accordingly, the art I love is unique, aesthetic
presentation of technical skills and new ideas.
A photograph may or may not be a piece of art. I believe there are
billions of photographs that do not meet the stated criteria of "art".
The art photographs are rare and far in between.I believe it is not the
rarity of art but the triteness of majority of photographic works that
makes real art so precious.
I believe I am in an everlasting competition with one thousand really good
photographers with their top-of-the-line cameras, lenses and other toys.
They wake up earlier, know all the best spots and models. They are bigger,
smarter, stronger and most importantly luckier. They see everything I see.
I believe a photographer, however alone he or she may be, if he cannot
feel the urge to compete with one thousand other photographers, and does not look
for the best angle, does not wait for the best light, does not force
himself for the best presentation, ultimately cannot elevate his work
above those who do these things.
I believe a picture can be extremely simple, yet very powerfull piece of
art. These are the most difficult, and rarest pieces of art, as they
crystalize years of experience to few bits, and take geniuses to see,
to create.
I believe, "idea" speaks louder than any single part of the work.
Idea makes the photography personal. Idea is the invisible signature of
the photographer that can make the work visible through the ages.
I thank the great masters that inspired me and countless others. I thank

Definition of "Photograph" that might help you fend off complaints
I am as impressed by your words as your images, and as a veteran in other forums concerning what is and isn't a photograph, I propose the following definition:
A photograph is an image made by projecting light onto a sensitized surface.
Subsequent manipulation doesn't make it any less so, even when things are rearranged (which as you say, we have always done in the darkroom when it suited our artistic objective). Nothing in the image is "drawn" or "painted".
But even if details are drawn or painted, it's still a photograph, just as a retouched or hand-colored photograph of old is still a photograph.
Your panoramic landscape work reminds me of the paintings of Frederick Church in many ways. They have so much scope to them that they invite getting lost in the details.
Rick "who has made enough contrast masks, dodged and burned in enough, and who has filtered the padooey out of enough enlargements to know that digital manipulation is merely a new tool to accomplish an old task" Denney
Mehmet Ozgur , January 06, 2006; 07:26 P.M.
What is photography II ?
I resisted with no avail. I fear it won't be complete and I fear it will
lose some of its magic.
Yet, my biggest fear is misinterpretations of my views. Therefore, I must
state this before I proceed: these are my humble views. Agreing or
disagreeing with me will probably not change my views and I really do not
expect to change your views either.
Following Rick's lead, and essentially the same as his definition, mein
will be two-tier:.
First, "source photograph" is an image made by
projecting light onto a sensitized surface.
Second, photograph is a new image created by analog or digital
manipulations on one or more source photograph(s).
A photograph is not an ART, if it does not have an artistic vision.
I applaud the artist who can distill his/her vision into an image by any means, with or without traditional methods. It is more than the path taken, tools used, but the resulting image, that I really appreciate. Unlike many who say it is the process that they like, personally, beyond the process, I really do enjoy the result. The process itself has no source of happiness, if there is no results.
I do not limit the artistic vision to a release of the shutter, just because this has been the norm.
Art of photography is more, much more than what a dumb sensor can capture, else, we would have seen almost everything there to see.
Enjoy life,
Bill Press , January 09, 2006; 09:32 P.M.

Kudos
Dear Mehmet,
I started out by rating some of your recent photos but when I looked at your complete portfolio, I realized that my ratings don't make for any real sense. You have one of the most beautiful collection of photo-art I've ever come across in my very humble short beginnings in this "world". I do not claim to know when a photographer is a master or not but your photos have striked a chord in me, not to mention your views on this artform. Should you one day ever feel compelled to give me a rating or an honest critique (bad or good), I shall consider it an honour and a real compliment. I shall be looking out for more of your work. Thanks for sharing.

I honestly don't know what it is that people have against seeing something that is at the very least interesting, yet having to add "but".
Either you like it or you don't. If you like it, great; if you don't that's also cool.
If annoys me no end when someone looks at my work (as opposed to labelling them as photographs) and then say "did you use Photoshop?"
Can you build a house without a hammer? Well, yes. But why would you. The only thing that matters is the final product. My house looks great (after 6 years of hard work) and no one would be stupid enough to suggest that it only looks great because I used this and that tool.
So why are there so many who want to add "but"?
Mehmet, your work is outstanding. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Lenswork
Hey, new to PN and am surprised I found your work in here after just reading the Lenswork mag with your art in it. Blown away was the only way I could describe seeing some of your work. The orginality and dramatic composition in your smoke images is very impressive.
I look forward to seeing more of your art.
Do you sell your work?
Daniel Beatty , December 21, 2006; 12:47 P.M.
Panoramics - Tripod
I would be interested to know how you approached your panoramic? Did you use a special tripod (panoramic tripod) , or just turn the lens on a normal tripod and shoot? Did the settings change for each photo or keep the same. Bracket? SOrry for the questions, new to panoramic and am interested in starting it.
Mehmet Ozgur , December 23, 2006; 05:57 P.M.
How to purchase prints of Mehmet Ozgur
I sell almost all the images seen above.
(Size)
High-aspect-ratio panoramas are only available in 10"-wide, others go up to 13"-wide. (Someday, when the printers improve, I'd like to offer larger versions as well.) In particular, images in the Smoke Works collection are available in 7" and 10" version only.
(Paper)
I'd like to print the monochrome images on matte finish, and color images on luster finish.
(Contact)
I dont have any galery representation, so interested parties should contact me directly here
Cheers,

I have no idea how you did your smoke work, and manipulated or not, it's fantastic. Very original idea, and impressive exposures. This is definitely art. I'm not big on Photoshop, but I do very much respect your views on photography. In a world where cheesey overmanipulated images rule, your smoke works stand out as a "breath of fresh air" ;-)

appreciation for good vision
Mehmet Ozgur has a terrific eye, a fantastic imagination, and good technical skills. I browsed his portfolio and was stunned by the beauty, range of images, and creativity. While many of the images are combined or generated in the computer, this is no different than the work of a painter except in the technology. Yet it does not seem artificial or pretentious. This is the kind of stuff that could also do well in the gallery world (for which I hold no brief) because it is imaginative and distinctive; and it is well done.

Mehmet
Congratulations Mehmet on an OUTSTANDING portfolio. You are so creative. Some of your images, like "seasons" I've wanted to do and planed to do for years. It's always, "oh I'll do that later" and it doesn't get done. Most of your images however, simple leave me gazing with awe and mumbling to myself things like, "How did he do that!" You are way outside the box Mehmet and that is where you should be for you have been blessed with a very different, creative vision that is priceless. Enjoy the gift and share the fruits of it.

I enjoyed reading those you wrote above and the insight you have said. It's
up to us how to express ourselves after a click of a shutter.I know some of us
wanted to express our rendition to a certain composition. Just like getting
dress for a party or for a picnic or to whatever it is. It's our expressions.
That's how I felt about it and how you and others out there and me shout
it out. It's the way we dressed it, our composition. Thanks to PS I do not
have to be out there at dawn or late in the evening to click my shutters
for a certain sunrise or sunset.
Your portfolios are worthwhile for the time I spent here and for my photographic
growth too especially what it does to my thinking.
Thanks for sharing,
Sally

This is a very impressive portfolio. I really enjoyed looking at what you have done with your work. I don't have the slightest problem that you use a large amount of digital manipulation. As long as the photographer does not try to cover it up and say that the picture is not manipulated then no problem, digital manipulation is all part of the game now.
I really hope that you've managed to get yourself a gallery representation, I think you deserve it.
Well done indeed,

Such a diversity of beautiful pictures and I love your B&W.
I came looking for you after a look back at Lenswork #78 and was suprised at your range of subjects and treatments.
I particularly liked the way you dealt with the light in Dante's reflection and Midway.
They reminded me of the work by the Australian Painter Hans Heysen and his outstanding painting "Droving into the Light"
But I digress. Beautiful work, no outstanding work. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
