G'day Neil

Thanks for kind comment re my folio

It's a great little folio you have posted up. A real mix. And all beautifully executed. You obliviously have a well rounded understanding of your subjects and it really shows through in your pics.

The Birds and Horse Racing folders are my favourates. The horse racing close ups are just outstanding.

But I'm more a vintage bike aficionado. How about some BSAs, Royal Enfields, Brough Superiors or AJSs going through their paces.

regards C.

Neil Murray , March 06, 2006; 06:06 P.M.

Thanks for the kind comments on my portfolio Craig. My main interest is the horseracing, both as a photographer and punter. To be honest I only got into the bike racing because it was so close to me here at Phillip Island. I do enjoy the day at the Superbikes and Moto GP though and I will keep an eye out for the vintage categories and post some photos.

I am glad I have joined Photo.net. Looking at other peoples work and having my own criticised brought me down to earth and has motivated me to improve.

All the best, Neil

Super Panning Machine!

I'm convinced that you have a machine that does the panning for you when you take these action photos. ;)
Neil, I'm very impressed with the clarity and the tight composition of all of your action photos, and they're all very nicely exposed as well.
Now I know who to come to for questions when I start doing action/sports photography! ;)

Thank you for sharing, and great work!

Marga dD , March 27, 2006; 01:14 P.M.

I love your motor- and horseracing-photo's. Quite impressive. What lens did you use? When i make pictures of running dogs i always have problems to get them sharp. I find it very difficult to do. Perhaps you could give me some advise? Regards,

Neil Murray , March 27, 2006; 11:49 P.M.

Thank you for the comments Marga. For the motorcycle racing I use the Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM. For the horseracing I use either the same lens or the Canon 70-200mm f4 L. My camera is Canon EOS 20D.

I usually rely on the autofocus but must say that with fast moving subjects it's not always reliable and I get quite a few out of focus images, particularly with the motorbikes. It also struggles to focus on the horses when the camera's focus point is on the horse's coat with no colour contrast for the sensor to detect. I sometimes prefocus manually on a point I know the motorbike or horse will pass. This works well for me on motorbike corner shots when the riders slow down somewhat. Most of my racing shots are taken by panning with the subject.

I haven't taken any running shots of my own dogs with the 20D but I used to take quite a number on film with my old Nikon 90X. I relied on the autofocus and found it pretty reliable. I think you have seen David Stevenson's excellent photos of his dog running. I notice that he prefocusses on an object which the dog will jump, or run over.

I'll take some shots of my dogs with the Canon lenses and see how they turn out. If they're any good I'll upload them for critique. Kind regards, Neil

Ian Jeanneret , April 04, 2006; 01:44 A.M.

Thanks Neil!

Gidday Neil, thanks for your comments on my portfolio. Its a great process this photo.net - I really enjoy the feedback and interaction. I love all of your action shots including the birds. Just out of interest I have recently started using the 100-400mm and have struggled a bit. My tele shots are either incredibly sharp or incredibly out of focus!! A trick I've just learnt is to move the AF point to a position that will capture contrast and be at an appropriate plane in the image. ie., shooting yachts I have to avoid focusing on the sail so I use an AF point that is lower down so it focuses on the boat or waterline. Hope I'm not telling you how to suck eggs but it was a big discovery for me :-) Cheers, Ian.

Ian Jeanneret , April 04, 2006; 01:46 A.M.

And of course I use AI Servo mode so the camera tracks the subject!

Ellen van Deelen , April 17, 2006; 09:33 A.M.

Thanks very much for your comment on my portfolio Neil! I also like your photo's, specially the "Birdlife" part. Really beautiful! Ellen.

Thanks for visiting and commenting on my portfolio - and as it often happens, I decided to repay the visit, which I'm glad I did...
Your bird folder is incredible and you've godt some very unusual shots there - especially the Gull scratching hes eye.
Your horse rece pictures are great too - you must spend a lot of time on the tracks to be able to capture those.

All the best and Happy Photography :-)

Marga dD , April 25, 2006; 08:48 A.M.

Neil, thank you for your explanation. I am going to try to do some prefocussing on my running dogs. Perhaps that will turn out better. But, my dogs are a bit unpredictable :) It' s not that i don't have nice pictures of Dude and Mac running, but there are still too many ending up in the recyclebin.

I thought I'd repay your visit to my portfolio, and now that I'm here I realize I've viewed several of your photos before! Love your horse photos and the one of the gull scratching his eye. I've never been interested in horse racing, but I must say - after seeing these great shots SHOOTING horse races looks interesting indeed! I'll definitely check back here again for inspiration and examples of excellent sports photography

Very colorful, i like your style

Cristi Basarab , June 13, 2006; 02:46 A.M.

Thank you. mate

For sharing with the world at large your beatifull creations. The birsd and horce racing photographs are especially vibrant. You do master the focusing and know how to get your sharpness in line and the wild and live subject just help you out creating great stills. The motor racing photos are again great even though more technical and less gracious; I mean what can be so gracious about an internal combustion engine equipped vehicle.

Keep having fun and keep showing us great photos

Hi Neil

Thanks for the comments on my PDA pic. I'm glad you enjoyed the humour. I have enjoyed viewing your portfolio immensely. The consistency of contrast, saturation and sharpness of your images is testimony to your skill as a photographer. That 100 - 400 of yours is a real gem! It's so much fun isn't it! Cheers mate.

Hi there neil

Hi there neil thanks for your comments on my pics and yes they could do with a bit of a seeing too !! as to your question about the lens and other thing I would like to say that I have lots of equipment like a canon, or a nikon, but the only camera i own is a samsung digimax a6 it dose have a lot on it but i manily use the auto up to now it has been takening some fair pics Iam trying to use some of the manual settings on it, and I should be putting some of these up very soon so keep an eye out later....? the pic with the man looking the other way was very lucky as I was going to junk the pic because it was not that good but I saw this at the last minute I was not sure weather or not to put this on but I thought why not.. any way thanks again for your intrest in my work!!! thanks again allan

Andy Aungthwin , July 20, 2006; 06:25 A.M.

Hi Neil, stumbled across your name from somewhere else and noted that your are also an ex Melbournian. I have relocated (just) a tad further, actually more than 15,000km futher.

Anyway, my wife is big on horses so I had a look at your porfolio. Tina and I only went once to the races - The 2000 Melbourne Cup - and she was just beside herself.

Now, I am not at all an expert on action shots, but FWIW your photos would be on a much higher plane if the backgrounds were more out of focus - you know, that "B" word. Of course it would be difficult to have great bokeh, and sharpness on the horse and the jockey. For example, in your Sopratutu shot I can see a car in the background. If you had great bokeh this would be blended in with the horse, and all of the viewers attention would be on the action. As it is the car and the somewhat unpleasant background out-of-focus rendition (AKA bokeh) is a distraction on what is otherwise a very good shot.

Well, that's my two cents worth.

Francisco Ribeiro do Vale , July 28, 2006; 01:37 P.M.

D. Munteanu , August 27, 2006; 03:07 P.M.

I got the feeling of a relaxed portfolio and phtographer, having very good (I might even say 'elitist') equipment which is used quite effectively. Perhaps you could and should stretch your classical views and shots and try more variate compositional approaches; I'm sure you could deliver better, more original work.

I also what to add that I've gone over some of your forum posts. Articulate, mature, ironic, penetrating - in a non-pompous way. I'd invite you for some tennis, had you not been a few oceans away..

It's when I look at your Portfolio I can see how much work I've got to put in to get images as good as some of yours- there are truly some brilliant pictures here.
