I came, I saw, I smiled!

There's something about the character of your images that causes me to smile in contemplation. What IT is, I don't know yet; perhaps I'll come back and discover what it is...? Right now, I'm enjoying your images, disregarding what exactly it is that attracts me to them.... can it be the way you captured the eyes? Hey, good show, Nina. Very good indeed! You're developing a really unique style of your own, and I like it.

Hi nina, i am really impressed with the kid's picture you shoot. I was caught here by looking a very original and asymmetrical portrait of two girls, but when i started browsing your portfolio i understood it was much more than one well done shot, this is methodical. You are very talented in portaiture, many pictures you made are eye-catching as their composition strongly attract and invite to explore the image. I admit that browsing the portfolio one can be really distracted by all those big eyes, at first sounds repetitive... but try seeing the images one by one, weighting the balance and the realization and you get a completely different idea.

I do appreciate your posting on PN, i hope you continue giving me (and us) emotions.

regards giuseppe

Jock Sturges , April 16, 2006; 03:00 P.M.

I actually joined this site so that I could post a comment to you.

You're a better photographer than you realize - you have an exceptional gift. You have an afinity for eyes well seen -- everyone sees and remarks at that. But the big engine in your work that comes both before and after your technical competence in rendering eyes is the personal charisma that you bring to the effort. Your subjects LIKE you and open their eyes wide to see you better and to be seen by you. Every picture ever made of a person is a record of a relationship (or its sad absence). The relationship your pictures manifest are wonderfuly giving. This is the best thing in your work.

Photography is always necessarily ABOUT something. Much of the work on this board (a lot of which is fiercely competent) is about... photography and craft. And phototgraphy in and of itself is finally not that interesting. What is really fascinating is when the subject is what the photographer KNOWS that the rest of us can NOT know. All of us can learn technical tricks. NONE of us have your relationship with your models - nor could we ever.

When we are young in our work we want the world to see all the things we can do well. Bees and landscapes. But the art world wants to see refinement, focus and even obsession because that raises the nature of the artist's access to levels that cause us to gaze up in admiration.

Your bees are competent, ditto the rest of your work. But did you notice in people's comments how riveted they all are by your stunning facial portraits? That is where they are seeing YOU the most clearly and they are understandably moved in the event.

Very Best,

jock sturges

Inspiring

Hi Nina, I have first seen your photos about 5 years ago here on photo.net and since then I have been checking your website regularly. Your work has been trully inspiring for me, it saddens me greatly that you haven't uploaded any new photos to your webside or here for couple of years now. I hope you are in great health, and if so I hope my little words of deep appreciation for your work can bring you back with more of your photography.

Beautiful portraits

Nina: wonderful portraits of your daughter. May I ask how you get your subject's eyes to be so well lit up and evenly lighted? Do you use a light bank or some type of diffuser?

This look is exactly what I want to capture with my children, so a little info on your technique would be much appreciated. You have a great eye...thanks.
